Hi Everyone,
A coworker of mine is going to be moving cross country soon. She JUST put in her 2 weeks notice. The company she's going to provides cash for relocation but no help finding a company. She has 3 weeks before she starts her new job.
Can anyone recommend a good company to move from the NC to Washington State?
She won't need her furniture in a timely manner, since she'll be moving in with her fiancee. She's moving a small 1Br apartment.

With that small of an apartment I'd probably sell what she doesn't need and rent a U-Haul type truck. The interstate moving companies have a 1000 pound minimum and it ain't cheap to move. I think The Walk of the Penguin Mich paid around $6k to move from KY to WA about a year ago. That included packing.

With that small of an apartment I'd probably sell what she doesn't need and rent a U-Haul type truck. The interstate moving companies have a 1000 pound minimum and it ain't cheap to move. I think The Walk of the Penguin Mich paid around $6k to move from KY to WA about a year ago. That included packing. The darling child isn't going to drive a U-Haul... She's said this several times. I don't think she's ever driven anything bigger than her Accord frankly. I was hoping if anyone had some names to give her so she can get some quotes

I wonder if her stuff is worth what's she's going to pay in moving costs!
I've used Mayflower and United Moving services but I'd recommend that she get three quotes after looking at reviews on Yelp. And I'd stay out of it. Let her do her own research. Too many horror stories from folks who took the lowest bid and got stood up on moving day.

Our last 5 moves were all company coordinated. But in a lump sum deal I'd get rid of most of my stuff (especially if I'm moving in with someone) and bank the cash.

I don't blame the girl for not driving. I've been a passenger in a car driving from MT to NC. It was a 3 day drive the way my father did it (meaning for most people it would be a 4 day drive). Add on getting to WA, and that's another day or two. I don't want to make that drive in my comfy VW with heated and highly adjustable seats, let alone in a frickin' U-Haul.
My best suggestion would be a major of stuff (especially furniture) and ground freight the rest of the stuff.
Edited to add: Just saw the post about her wanting "her" stuff for the other bedroom. I'm guessing her fiance's apartment is a 2 bedroom, then? But really, once she sees the costs for moving her furniture across the country, she may realize that she can spend less and replace all of "her" stuff with new, nicer things.

I agree with shanendoah. Unless she has inherited some pretty awesome antique or heirloom furniture, I'd be tempted to sell what she currently owns and get some nicer stuff in her new location.

Yep, Bonny had it about right. I paid $6200 to have my apartment packed and moved and it was the best money I ever spent. They did everything, all that I had to do was be there and direct and provide cold drinks. I think I also made my reservations for the move about 6 weeks in advance, but I was on a very tight schedule. That may not be necessary this time of year.
I think that I have the moving company information still on my dresser. I don't know if they go as far as NC from KY, but when I get home I'll PM you the company name if you want, I'd recommend them in a heartbeat. This company had VERY good reviews on Yelp, and I probably should go in and add to the good reviews. This past move was nothing like the crap I dealt with when I moved from TX to KY.
You all have to realize that now is not the best time to be driving a UHaul and moving. I did it in June, so weather wasn't an issue. However, I would NOT want to be driving a trailer over some of the mountain passes to get to WA. The weather can turn to crap on a dime.
My brother suggested selling it all and buying new. Only problem was that I had already started buying stuff that I had intended on keeping forever. There was no way I was going to get what I paid for it and it would have cost me waaaay more to replace it. I did unload a bedroom worth of stuff and my dining room, because these were things that were duplicated. The vast majority of the move was my life. I was already moving into someone else's home, I needed some of me there too.
It was a rough, 3 day drive from KY to WA. We drove Lexington to Minneapolis, Minneapolis to Billings, MT (day wasn't horrible) and Billings to Bellingham (a very long day where we got in in the early morning). As I mentioned earlier, we drove in the summer and were able to drive very fast through Montana (the speed limit is 75, I think). If the weather sucks, you don't have that option.
Montana seems to go on forever!

It would cost $4800 to have a POD delivered from KY to WA. There really isn't much of a cost differential for a long move as there is a short move.

When we moved from Washington D.C. to the SF Bay Area in December we took the southern route so we could spend Christmas with my family in San Diego. We did hit an ice storm just outside Little Rock and wound up spending the night expectantly there. But then, I like a little adventure. I have the feeling this young lady would probably not have the same attitude as I did. All told I think we took about 5 days to get to San Diego, spent two days with my family and another day to get to SF Bay Area. WA is probably a two-day drive from SF in the winter.

There's already snow in MT. A major cold snap has hit (high today in Billings, MT is 10, low of -7 tonight - and yes, these are Fahrenheit degrees), and roads are bound to be icy.

I remember when I moved crossed country in 2001. I placed my hand on EVERYTHING and asked myself one question. Do I want to pay to move this. I got rid of 95% of my stuff and kept what was precious to me.
Pictures, books, music, piano, violin, computer, and personal stuff.

this is all just speculative....maybe the lump sum she's getting will exceed what it actually costs....and the worth of something isn't just monetary, maybe she really likes her stuff and it will cost her $4k to replace it.

It may be worth only $2000, but it may cost over $20K to replace. That was the position that I was in. Hell, I probably had over $2000 tied up in my kitchen alone, as I had started purchasing expensive pots and pans, knives, etc. It would cost me over $500 just to replace my knives!

I think any of the major moving companies would be fine for a cross country move. Bekins, United, Allied, Mayflower, or North American. I've used, IIRC, Bekins, United, and North American with only minor, easily repairable damage to contents. Wasn't true the one time we used a local mover for a 100 miles move. Dropped a desk. Ended up involving lawyers to wrap up the transaction. I don't agree with this....at all. I used another moving company to move both me and my lab to KY and it was a clusterf&*( from hell. I was paying my bill for my personal move (and getting reimbursed - but I still had limited personal funds for the move until I was reimbursed) and the moving company tried to pad it every way from Sunday. A $3000 written estimate for my move turned into a $5800 bill. The packers didn't show up on time, did a half-assed job of packing and didn't complete it, so when the movers came, they came into an apartment that was half packed. They did not show up prepared to pack, only move. So someone had to go get packing supplies, come back and spend a few hours to finish packing before they could haul everything away. They were pissed, and it showed up how much care they didn't take for my stuff. On the lab move, they left 3 large pieces of equipment behind because they would have needed someone to help them haul it and didn't want to. That was roughly $50K in equipment we needed to replace. They destroyed an incubator and a hood, about $10K for those 2 items. I'm not sure how much they padded this bill, as I didn't see it but I know they did.

We just moved across country and had most of our stuff shipped (4 bedroom house). I would not do it again. Between the stuff that was damaged in shipping and the stuff that just doesn't fit right in the new place, it was not worth the hassle to bring it.
