Many years ago when I first got out of college I went to work for a really progressive political group. Really progressive, and hip, and PC, granola, and all that cool stuff.
We did mostly field work, but we always ended up back in the office. Back then smoking cigarettes indoors was- believe it or not- normal, and of course pot was illegal as all get out.
It was not unusual for someone or several someones to fire up a doobie in the office at the end of the day. But there was a strictly enforced No Smoking policy. Cigarettes; tobacco cigarettes, that is. Really? My BFF had something similar happen when she met her now-DH. She was at his friend's house and excused herself to go outside "to smoke". All his friends wanted to join her and when she pulled out her Marlboro cigarette, they were horrified! "How can you smoke cigarettes? That's so nasty!".... Yeah, they thought she had pot and wanted to "join her" as she toked up (No, she doesn't smoke pot). It seems that, among pot smokers, there is a belief that there is no harm done by smoking pot. Even though he had a nasty smoker's hack, my health nut crunchy granola exbf would defend his habit to his death. I tried to research the health effects of smoking pot a little, but its too hard to get through all the defenses erected by people who love pot. Personally, I think that there are good aspects to it (though its not for me), but I don't think that its all good like they would have you believe. That smoker's hack being exhibit A. (The fact that the 2 x's that pertook were both selfish assholes being exhibit b.)

I'm a smoker who doesn't eat red meat. It has nothing to do with my health. I've seen what goes on at factory farms and industrial feedlots, and I won't be party to that.
He's now a she, Andreja Pejić, underwent sex reassignment surgery earlier this year.
I wish her all the happiness in the world.

I have a checking account, savings account, and two credit cards through one bank. Until last week, my car loan was also through this bank. I bought a new car through a credit union and they sent the payoff check to the bank on 11/4. My monthly car payment was auto-deducted from my checking account on 11/5. Having seen no refund applied to my account, I called the bank to find out what had happened to the extra payment. Oh, they issued a paper check for the overpayment, it was mailed Friday. Even though the funds were auto-debited from an account held by the same bank. SMH I sent in a payment for DH's life insurance a little late. They cashed the check, then decided the insurance had lapsed because I paid it too late. So they cut me a check and returned it to me, with a letter that I could reinstate the coverage by signing a form and mailing in ANOTHER check.

DANG, you have to make me say it: waste not, want not Along these lines I once made a kindergartner SH(is)H. I was volunteering as the art teacher in DS1 class and when using his name used the (proper) Dutch pronounciation. Kid came up to me and told me his name is not Xyz but xYz. He then turned around with a very exasperated look along the lines of "how can your mom NOT know how to pronounce your name properly" It is still one of my favorite memories of that time.

Yeah, you name it and the food industry will super-size, over-sweeten and load it with fat. I've read the nutritional info on some of those muffins. Scary. Why do muffins have to be the size of a pillow?

When MIL had her accident in 2000, C completely paid off the HELOC on her condo with some of the insurance money. ~4 years later, she was using the HELOC to supplement her income and had maxed it out. Each month, she made the required interest payment, and a little more (from money we sent her), and the proceeded to max it out again. C and I tried to explain that if she didn't start actually paying down the HELOC than in 10 years when the HELOC came due, she would owe the bank a balloon payment of $25k, and if she couldn't pay it, she would lose her condo. She told us that couldn't be true because the bank hadn't said anything to her about it.
To be fair, MIL suffered brain damage in her accident and then had some mini-strokes. This conversation was one of the early pieces of evidence we had that we needed to take over her finances. As a note, the HELOC will be paid completely off in January, about 4 months before the balloon payment would be due. (And then C and I will own MIL's condo free and clear. Currently, it has a renter in it, and we don't intend for that to change anytime soon.)
This past summer, when trying to change what Medicaid "plan" Pop Tart was on, I forgave the operator for insisting, twice, that my daughter could not have her own medicaid number and it had to be through my subscriber number, because that is the most common type of situation to deal with, whereas a child adopted out of foster care is not a regular occurrence. But when they tried to insist that they couldn't talk to me without permission from her social worker or the state, I got a little testy explained what "adopted" meant in legal terms - ie the state no longer had any legal authority to discuss my daughter with their office, and that my husband and I were the only ones who could legally give anyone permission to discuss her case. When the medicaid person conferenced in someone from the foster care program, their first response was - we can't tell you anything, this child has been adopted. Medicaid person still wouldn't talk to me, and we went through a couple of different transfers before we got the adoption support people, who hung up on the medicaid person, and took care of my issue.

She talked to the pharmacist and got approved for a month, but we had to fix her insurance paperwork. Reminds me of time when we kept getting past due bills from an OBGYN (not mine). I finally called them and asked what procedure they had performed and she told me. Their office wasn't very far from house so I got in my car and walked in, went straight to front with bill in hand and told girl I wanted my money back. Part of the bill had been paid!!! Apparently the hysterectomy they had performed failed since I was 8 months pg. That's when I found out how many NNP there were in my city

She said okay, but it's a really bad disease that any of us could get and she donates because if she gets it she's hoping it's after a cure is found. Ok, I've finally got something that makes me shake my head, and it has to do with the weather.
When it's a beautiful sunny day - people I know are like - lets go out and spend the day doing some indoor thing! It's so nice outside.
Then when it's cold or wet outside they moan and groan because they can't go outside - so they can't possibly get in their car (it's in an attached garage) and drive to go some indoor thing becuase it's cold or raining. OK, I get staying home when it's 10 below or snow is falling inches per hour. But on just a regular old 'winter' day - no, there's nothing to do but stay home.
I live in a densely populated area - the streets are clear. Why can't we go to a movie or the outlet stores if it's drizzling or it's 28 degrees outside? We'll be warm in the car and then at our destination. I don't get this. At all.

Ok, my story. A few years ago I was very sick and undergoing many medical procedures, which in the process I lost 30+ pounds (155 to around 119)in about 2 months. I looked emancipated and sickly to say the least. A co-worker suggested that I join a weight loss group that she belonged to because "everyone needs to lose weight".....my normal weight, based on my body type, is between 145-150.

It's a shame you could not take that thirty-something pounds you lost, tie them in a bag, tie the bag closed with a rope and knock her over the head with it and yell, "Looky at this! I found the weight I lost!" People like her are proof that stupid can be a way of life.

My late husband and I were at my parent's house on vacation once. My mother has weird taste and bought these large crystal balls that hung from her ceiling fans...
We got to talking about tacky household stuff previous owners buy and my husband points out "like those hooker balls hanging from your ceiling fans that look like they belong in the house of prostitution."
My mother pointed out she had replaced those recently with those pretty crystals.
I about died laughing. We still refer to them as the hooker balls.

It was. I'm gearing up for holiday gift giving season. Oddly enough, many of my friends like to receive homemade hooch. And most homemade hooch tastes better if you can let it sit for a month or so to blend. It's been a boozy, messy weekend. I've got batches going of:
Pastis (kind of like Sambuca, but less complicated) Anisette Coffee liqueur Limoncello Orange brandy (like Grand Marnier) Cranberry liqueur Irish Cream
It was good timing. One of my friends had a big Divorce Party and we polished off all the peach hooch I'd made this summer, freeing up many of the big glass jars needed for the experiments. The peach hooch wasn't my favorite of the stuff I've tried to make, but it mixed great with champagne to make a really boozy Bellini. Are you willing to share recipes? Please ? Cranberry Liqueur
1 lb cranberries, fresh or frozen 1 ½ c Everclear 1 ½ c sugar ¾ c water ½ lime peel (peel only, no white pith) ¼ orange peel (peel only, no white pith)
In a blender or food processor, chop cranberries. Combine chopped cranberries and Everclear in a large glass jar that seals well (I use the Everclear to rinse out the blender instead of trying to scrape it.) Add the lime and orange peel to the jar. Over medium-high heat, stir sugar and water until sugar is dissolved. Let the simple syrup stand for one minute and then add 1 1/2c. of it to the jar with the cranberries. Quickly seal the jar so the alcohol doesn’t evaporate and escape. Let this mix steep in a cool, dark place for a month, shaking once a week.
After a month, strain the mix through a mesh sieve, discarding the cranberries. Then strain the liquid through a coffee filter, repeating as many times as needed to remove any sediment. Bottle in bottles that seal well. Ready to drink after one week, but best if you let it sit another month.

Limoncello
10 organic lemons (Meyer lemons make a liqueur with a complicated, floral smell and people will intensely love or hate it; regular lemons are simple but almost universally pleasing) 1 750 ml bottle Everclear 3 ½ c. water 2 ½ c. sugar
Separate the peel from the lemons, being sure not to get any white pith in the peel. You can use a zester but be careful not to allow too much of the lemon oils to escape – works if you hold the lemon low into a bowl while zesting so you can capture the oils that are sprayed in the zesting process. Or you can use a peeler or knife to cut strips off the peel, going back to remove any white pith that is included. Place the lemon peels into a large jar that seals well. Pour Everclear on top, stir and seal tightly. Steep in cool, dark place for one week.
Stir water and sugar over medium-high heat until sugar dissolves and mix is slightly thickened, about 8-10 minutes. Cool completely (if it’s not cool, it will make the finished liqueur look cloudy.) After the simple syrup is completely cool, add about 2/3 of it to the lemon Everclear mix. Seal well and let sit overnight in a cool, dark place.
Strain the limoncello through a mesh sieve. If you don’t mind if it’s cloudy with small bits of lemon, you’re done straining. If you want a clear limoncello, strain it again using coffee filters in the mesh sieve. You may have to filter it more than once.
After filtering, taste it. It will continue to become smoother as it ages, you’re just checking to see if it’s sweet enough. Add small amounts of simple syrup until it’s as sweet as you prefer. Bottle the limoncello in bottles that seal well. Refrigerate. Ready to drink now, but will taste best if you let it sit for a minimum of one more week.

Coffee Liqueur (similar to Kahlua) Makes about 1 liter
1 ½ c. really good quality, rich medium-coarse ground coffee 3 c. cold water I bottle (750 ml) dark rum 2/3 c. brown sugar 1 tbl molasses 2/3 c. water ½ vanilla bean or 1 tsp vanilla extract (not imitation vanilla)
Combine coffee and 3 c. water in a glass jar, stir. Let sit for 12-15 hours, stirring once or twice during that time. Strain it through a mesh sieve, discarding grounds. Strain again, but this time through the mesh sieve lined with a coffee filter. You might find the filter gets too clogged with particles to drain well after just a small amount of liquid is poured through it, so just do a little at a time and use a new filter when the old one gets too clogged. Discard grounds and filters, putting strained coffee into a large glass jar that seals well.
Over medium-high heat, stir brown sugar, molasses and 2/3c. water until sugar is all completely dissolved and mixture thickens a little bit – 10 min or so. Cool slightly. Doesn’t have to be cold, but shouldn’t be boiling hot.
To the strained coffee, add the rum, vanilla and about ¾ of the simple syrup mix. Stir gently and taste; remember that it will smooth out over the next few weeks and you can always add more sugar later but once you’ve added too much, you’re stuck with cough syrup. If it’s not sweet enough, add a little more simple syrup. Seal well and let sit in a cool, dark place. After the mix has sat for a week, taste again. Add more syrup as needed. Seal well and let sit in a cool, dark place for at least a month to let the flavors mature.

Irish Cream - Similar to Bailey’s
1 c. cream (not half and half) 1 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk (I like Eagle brand) Scant cup or about 7 oz. Whiskey (Jamieson’s makes a very smooth, subtle finished product, Maker’s Mark makes a more inviting smelling but stronger tasting finished product) 1 tsp instant coffee granules 2 tbl Hershey’s Dark chocolate syrup 1 tsp vanilla extract (not imitation vanilla) ¾ tsp either almond extract or coconut extract (I like almond b/c it’s more subtle, DH likes coconut b/c it’s more like Bailey’s)
Put all ingredients in a blender. Blend on high for 30 seconds, scraping sides once if necessary. Enjoy. Whatever you don’t drink immediately should be stored in a very tightly sealed jar or bottle. It will keep for 2-3 months in the refrigerator if it’s sealed. Each time you drink some, be sure to shake it well before drinking and seal it well afterwards.

Pour brandy on top, stir and seal tightly. Store mix in cool, dark place, stirring once a week. Macerate at least 1 month (tastes best if you can let it macerate longer, 3-6 months is even better.)
Strain peels from brandy. Easiest way is to first strain big pieces out using a mesh sieve. Then, do a second straining by running mix through a coffee filter set in a mesh sieve. If you want the mixture to be clear, you can repeat the coffee filter process.
Make the simple syrup. Heat sugar and water over medium-high heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Cool completely.
Add ¾ of the simple syrup mix to the brandy. Seal in glass bottle and let this mix sit for 3-7 days in a cool dark place before tasting – it may be sweet enough. If it’s not sweet enough, add more of the simple syrup mix to taste.
Rebottle and seal well. Age in a cool, dark place for at least one week. It will get better as it ages, and is best after sitting for at least a month.

Liqueur – Pastis (Anise based, similar to Sambuca) Makes 2 cups
10 star anise pods 1 tbl licorice root ½ tsp fennel seeds ¼ tsp whole coriander seeds ½ tsp anise seeds 1 ½ c. Everclear 1/3 c. sugar ½ c. water
Either crush the herbs or coarsely grind them in a spice grinder. Add herbs and Everclear to a clean glass jar that seals well. Shake. Steep for a week in a dark place.
Boil sugar and water together until sugar dissolves and syrup is slightly thick – 10 min. While it cools, strain the spices out of the Everclear mix using a coffee filter set in a strainer. When the syrup is completely cool, add it to the Everclear mix and seal the jar well. Let the mix rest for at least 1 week (but it’s better if it rests for a month and will keep improving after that) in a cool, dark place. Enjoy.

How can they be Bailey's Irish Cream, which is a Whiskey based drink, made without Whiskey? No idea. I've seen some recipes with whiskey, some with rum, some with brandy and some with bourbon. Probably just one of those brands/trademarks that are used interchangeable in the US to denote a cream-based liquor.

Are you willing to share recipes? Please ? Cranberry Liqueur
1 lb cranberries, fresh or frozen 1 ½ c Everclear 1 ½ c sugar ¾ c water ½ lime peel (peel only, no white pith) ¼ orange peel (peel only, no white pith)
In a blender or food processor, chop cranberries. Combine chopped cranberries and Everclear in a large glass jar that seals well (I use the Everclear to rinse out the blender instead of trying to scrape it.) Add the lime and orange peel to the jar. Over medium-high heat, stir sugar and water until sugar is dissolved. Let the simple syrup stand for one minute and then add 1 1/2c. of it to the jar with the cranberries. Quickly seal the jar so the alcohol doesn’t evaporate and escape. Let this mix steep in a cool, dark place for a month, shaking once a week.
After a month, strain the mix through a mesh sieve, discarding the cranberries. Then strain the liquid through a coffee filter, repeating as many times as needed to remove any sediment. Bottle in bottles that seal well. Ready to drink after one week, but best if you let it sit another month.

I have a last name that sounds common but is spelled a little weird. For instance, Smith but spelled Smythe. I was giving my information over the phone to a woman who didn't like how I spelled my last name. I spelled it out for her letter by letter, and she kept asking me 'isn't there another R in there? Isn't it spelled XXXX?' After about the fourth time of me spelling it for her, she said "You're spelling it wrong." Yes, of course, you must be right, I am spelling my own name wrong. SMH. I have a very common last name. I asked a client one day how to spell her last name. She pointed at my name plate on my desk and said "Isn't it your last name?" It was kinda embarrassing.
