If the woman is in the hospital and hasn't made arrangements for her pets to be taken care of, that's abandonment. It is unreasonable to hold lark hostage with the expectation that SHE will care for four animals that aren't hers for more than a day or so. Her daughter just showed up. Fed the cats, walked the dog, and walked into the house, btw, without even knocking. It's not like anyone said to me, "Oh, hey, she'll be coming at this time!" But she left. Without the cats and the dog. And as I told her she needed to take them, she started pushing back. And I said they can't stay here, and she said they can, and I said, "NO!" and she said, "Raise your voice to me again and I'll call the police!" I said Go for it! And then there was her mother, on the face time, started yelling at me, "I'll take your house!" And I replied in such a classy manner. And she called the police after her daughter left, and she lied and said I'd hit her daughter. Really? No. Not at all. I'm on hold with the attorney I spoke with earlier this week. Ugh.

Doesn't the dog need to go out at least 3 or 4 times a day? I don't understand why the daughter doesn't take the animals to her house? This whole thing is making ME irate. I can't imagine how I'd feel if I was you. I'd be like burning my own house down.

It may not be abandonment according to the court, or the shelter. I get what you are saying but I think it is very important to dot every I and cross every T when the court is involved. If the court has given her an extra 30 days to vacate your place, the court may take the position that you are not at liberty to move ANY of her possessions, including pets, and to take ordinary care of those possessions to return to her.
Maybe your local animal control can answer questions for you.
I understand YMMV. You will do what you will do. Just go in, eyes wide open. That's all I'm saying.
ETA: I was going to suggest you talk to your attorney. Good to read that you have someone you can call.

Actually, according to the SPCA, it is abandonment if they leave the pets here uncared for. Earlier today, I tried to take the dog out, but couldn't make it up the stairs. A friend tried to take him, and he was too frightened of a stranger to allow it. So he's been pooping upstairs, poor thing, thank goodness he's small, not a lot, not big stuff. My friend fed and watered them all, too. Monday I have to speak with the Humane Society, they're going to contact the daughter who has not showed up today and discuss with her the legal aspects of her abandoning the animals, which they define as cruelty.
My door locks are changed, btw, I don't need anyone just traipsing in like they think they own the place. The police told me I have every right to do so, the mother was the tenant, not a random child, handing off my house key was absolutely wrong. If the daughter does finally show up to pick up the pets, I will call the police, they will escort her in and out, no exception.
I also have to get my cameras installed, I have been trying to reach my ADT rep, I have a door alarm, but I want cameras, now, I don't need any kind of vandalism or anything, I have spent too much time and money on this house getting it where I want it, I don't need to repair anything.
My attorney is going to file a Summary Judgment for Possession of my house. He's expecting it's still going to take the court about a week to catch up. It's my house, after all, and this broad and her brood are making my life absolute hell. As for all her stuff - it's going to be boxed up, bagged up, whatever, and we'll put it outside - under a tarp - on my patio. I won't be able to toss it out until the court says this summary judgment passes, but at least it will be out of my house. And I can cleanse.
I'm just so disgusted, I truly am.

It is your house.
I'm sorry all of this is happening. Her children should have taken the animals, at a minimum.

MuffyintheRed #2 10/23/2023 158,544.13 (06/22/2020 $175.394.16)
Amount paid -$-1,127.68
CU Savings - $25,675.10
It has been a good month. I figured out one of my bank transfers will get paid off before they start to charge interest. I didn't remember how long I had to pay it off, so as long as I keep paying $500 per month it will be paid off in time. I really want to get that one paid off. So I can put that amount on something I am not racing but still needs to be paid off.
The trees are almost bare in Wisconsin. I guess no matter how much I don't want winter to come, it will be here shortly! Also starting to think about the holidays and saving up my Amazon giftcards for it.

Sigh.
OK, so first, I have had help all weekend cleaning out the attic bedroom where my squatting raccoon lived for the last year, 8 months unpaid. We found a lot of interesting things. many of my tools which had disappeared, lots of hoarding (LOTS of hoarding), a box of (ahem!) "toys" (thank the universe we were wearing gloves!), and pet mess. Everywhere, pet mess. And multiples of stuff. And empty bottles of stuff that was replaceable, things like less than a tablespoon of shampoo or body wash in a bottle, and we're talking a dozen bottles like it, all but emptied, and none of them moved out of their place wherever. Who keeps that?
And so much just... trash. So much. Everywhere. OMG, what a mess!
Second. I spoke with the SPCA, who put me in touch with the Humane Society, and we looked some things up, and basically, after 48 hours, if they're not picked up by a "responsible owner", the dog and cats are considered abandoned by the state of Pennsylvania. And I spoke with an attorney today, he reassured me that since she is no longer squatting in my house, and won't be returning, anyway, not with her health issues, I can actually just cancel the eviction, it's already a Summary Judgment of Possession, no need to involve the judge, anymore, and as of now her kids have 30 days to remove her belongings from my property. And my friend has already offered to take the three cats, I actually like the dog, so I've decided to keep him (downstairs where I can reach him), and in 30 days, if someone doesn't come pick up her car, I can have it towed. He also agreed it would be prudent to get security cameras installed to be sure her brood doesn't try to do something to my home, and yes, I finally reached ADT, I'm having them installed next week.
Just as a note here, I mentioned $8000 to evict her? Well, I don't have to evict her now, she's already out. But:
$400 for assistance with moving her crap out of my house this weekend. $325 for the attorney $875 for the cameras $300 for the sanitizing Deep Clean I'll get Wednesday $nnn for the contractor to repair SO much damage upstairs (probably $1-1.5K)
Peace of mind? Priceless.
Oh, btw, just to make you all laugh - she called the police again today, she told them I was being cruel to her animals. They called me and asked what she meant, I was laughing so hard it took me a minute to tell them she was just full of hooey. One more harassing call to the police, and I think they may be the ones going after her!

Priceless is correct.
I am happy to see the animals all have homes.
I am so sorry you are going through this.
Why does she keep calling the police? Rhetorical question.

Vindictive in general? Who knows? Who cares? They aren't taking her seriously, anymore - they didn't come to my house this time, they called me, instead. Making what is essentially "prank" calls to 911 isn't a smart thing for anyone to do, and it's a small town I live in - I know all the police.

So, what did you do with all her stuff? Is it still in the house or on the lawn under a tarp. Keeping the dog is nice of you, but I wonder if it might just create more problems down the road when she comes for it? Sounds like that might not happen though with her medical issues.

minnesotapaintlady, she has metastatic cancer, this latest bout in the hospital she won't be surviving, if she wants the dog, she can come get it, but I seriously doubt she or any other member of her family will be coming for him. But if they do - well, they're welcome to come get him.
The Humane Society code is that after 48 hours of not being responsible for a pet, it's considered abandoned, and since she has made no care provisions, the dog was essentially abandoned in my house - along with the cats, who have been adopted by a loving cat person. Anyway, I could take him to the SPCA, keep him, or give him away. I like the dog, though, he's actually very sweet, I chose to keep him. He's also old, not likely to live more than another year or two. And as my friend who was here this past weekend can attest, sweet as his personality is - he's an ugly little mutt! So ugly, in fact, he's cute! But - old age and unattractive is not a good combination in the SPCA, he would probably be destroyed within a week, here he gets to live comfortably for his last year or so.
And yep, everything is outside, boxed up or bagged, secure under a tarp for 30 days. And if they abandon her stuff here, 1-800-JUNK.

La-la-la-la!
So, the dog is happy. Happier than I've ever seen him! He's calm, he's well-behaved - he's a really nice dog! Last night we went shopping at Pet Smart, he has a new doggie bed, a cool new outdoor coat, new kibble (not the cheap junk), treats, and a new chew toy. And he slept in front of the heater practically purring. This morning when I got up for his walk, he basically looked at me like, "Aw, Mom, can't I sleep just five more minutes?" He's been contentedly rolling around all day while I work from home. And she had a kennel, which he goes into without argument, he knows it's his place when I'm not here, and he's OK with that.
I gotta find him a good smelling dog shampoo, though, he's already starting to stink again (I bathed him Monday night) (wow, did he need it!).
ADT is here, I called yesterday morning and asked if they could come sooner than next week, and they said, sure, we can come Wednesday afternoon... and I've got nifty new security cameras!
I have to go into the office tomorrow, but again, he does OK in the crate. And work is close enough I can come home at lunch and we can go for a walk then, too.
It has been a year, folks! I am so glad it's finally relaxing!

He had to be horribly bored and lonely locked in the attic alone all day.

lark1964 - So glad you and the dog are finally doing good. I'll bet the dog is happy to have someone kind to take care of him and to actually walk him. Best to you both.

So - I have an actual totaling question here: I have paid off my car. BUT, I'm in the market for a new one. So - when I do my total this. month, I'll be sans car and car payment anymore, but I'll be adding... it's just a thing I have to do, I'm not sure... I suppose I could put in a placeholder for the new car note, yes? It'll be more than I owed (4600+, now zero), which will increase my total, but not really in a bad way, just it'll be an increase that is necessary... or should I just leave the new car note out? Or... would the car - by itself? - become a third race?
Oh, and I mentioned this before, I just looked at my credit score, it's up to 648, yay! And my borrowing power with my pension, if I need it (but I'm going to not use it ever, not if I can help it, ever), is $65K. I figured it would be about that much.

lark1964 congrats on paying off the car! Personally I wouldn't add it to your "race" at this point, since you'll be prioritizing other, higher-interest debt. You can always add it later once that's paid off. So happy that things are looking up for you!

lark1964, I have always just added or subtracted lines as they come and go over the past 16 years. In 2020 when I purchased this house, I didn't include the mortgage in my race because, at 2.75%, it's one of the last things I'd be focused on paying off so no sense tracking it. However, I've added the home equity loan and the new personal loan to my rolling total. It's really however is easiest for each person so long as the tag line is in the standard format.

Lemme just go ahead and update today. nidena: 10/31/2023 $54,686.01 (8/22/2007 $223,361.20 N453,503,NE648,NPT25)
Both CCs that have higher interest rates have been paid off. They do still have balances but the *statement* balance was paid off. The BT for the 0% went through and I'll be working towards paying that off over the next 11 months. I haven't bought any new, large pieces of furniture or electronics aside from a new laptop which is why the second CC has a balance and a plane ticket for flying to my dad's for Christmas. That went on the first CC. I also need to pay for my auto insurance which will happen in the next few days. I pay annually so it costs more as a lump but costs less overall.
Happy Halloween, all!

I need to start doing that, they add a $5/mo service fee, now. $60 a year! Just for "convenience!" Far too many things out there nickel and dime us, I can't count how often they do this/that/the other thing fees. From what I hear, even the "self-check" registers (I refuse to use them) are even asking for *tips*! Absolutely nuts!

I don't know how much the convenience fee is for my policy but when I played around with the payment frequency and set it to pay monthly, my insurance company very helpfully has a note on the page that says "You're paying more than people who pay twice or in full" so there's obviously a fee. For a year, it was $1016 for full coverage. My broker says that I'm still at the best coverage amongst all the comparisons so I haven't changed the company since I switched in 2021.

So... I got a refund check in the mail last night from Toyota, because when I paid off my car... I overpaid by $1.17. I've been trying to think - what can I possibly buy for $1.17?

My balance is 101,355.87 across 7 separate loans, interest rates between 5.59% and 6.96% . I got a car loan last year and just looked at that to determine where to focus and the car loan is 5.34% so less than all my various loans..... Minimum payments made 10-5, new balance is 100,432.22. Next month might go below 6 figures? Looks like nearly 1k went to principal, but with the restart won't take that as what to expect going forward....will reeval that next month on what to expect for principal reduction on the monthly minimums. Payment due yesterday, is out of my checking account today, but not yet credited to my student loans Meanwhile - interest continues to accrue daily, even on weekends, so balance is up 17.22 from yesterday dispite the payment. Current balance is 100,965.97, so it seems like my payment will very briefly take me below 6 figures, but with over $17 a day in interest capitalizing daily it will quickly zoom back over the 100k mark. Maybe even whipsawing across that threshold for the next few payments. Soooooooooooooooooooooo frustrated! Capitalizing daily is such a dick move. As well as initiating the transfer 3 days ago and still not credited!

Had an arborist out to look at my three trees to see about trimming, thinning, and/or removal. I knew one HAD to go but he said a second one is rotting from the inside out...showed me the gaping holes that are allowing water to collect inside like a rain bucket. The price is very reasonable. I remember having five fir trees removed back in 2000 and 2001 and that cost $2000 so I don't consider what they quoted to be too high. I do need to wait a bit since I just spent $2500 on auto insurance, a new laptop, and a plane ticket.
