Mourningcloak (3): 3/30/22 $61,875.56 (12/8/2021 $61,046.20) Was hoping to post a better update. It's been a couple crazy months. Some planned expenses, some not planned. I guess when I think about it, I would have been below my starting point if it weren't for the two large unexpected bills. So some progress I guess. But here's where life is. It's the first full spring in the house since we moved in mid-April last year, so we have a lot of expenses for odds and ends that we want to be doing. We've had tons of discussions on what to do now, what to skip, what to procrastinate on. This year we are redoing the front flower bed and getting a lawn care service to lay down better grass seed and top soil with the sod that covers the clay in our yard. So far we've paid for the decor and top soil for the flower beds, still need to purchase flowers. Been waiting on the winter cold to finally be gone. I think today the guy comes to take care of the grass. While this is pricier than we hoped, it's more convenient and quite possibly cheaper than us doing it ourselves since we have no way to transport that much dirt. The grass type will also be cheaper to maintain than this horrible sod grass. We took care of the storm door my husband has been begging for. The door and installation costs were both financed on my Lowe's card for 0% for 6 months. That will be easy to pay off in time. I would have never imagined buying my husband a door for his birthday and how thrilled it would make him Unexpected expenses -A supplemental tax bill for the house around $1k. This delayed some pay down of debt. -Having to pay income taxes for the first time ever, at almost $800. This was a combo of things. I didn't think to readjust my tax withholdings for losing DS1 as a dependent. In addition, I didn't do any adjusting for the advanced child tax credit for DS2. -Replacing my retainer and having dental work for DS2. I knew this expense for my retainer was coming and was long overdue since the first retainer was painful so I haven't been wearing it since the move but finally took care of it. Thankfully for both expenses I still have money in my FSA, so just a matter of putting in the claims and then applying the money towards the cards they were put on. Hoping next month at least comes out pretty even considering the planned spring expenditures. As long as nothing unexpected comes up, April should go well.

I'm thinking I didn't fill something out on my w4 to accommodate my income bumping me into a higher tax bracket. My taxable income has been less than $30,000 for the past four years or so but the full-time job, last year, put it at more than $50,000.
And then, with my property taxes, I get a reduction due to being a disabled veteran which results in me having less to deduct when it comes time to file.
So, I owe Federal quite a chunk and I owe State a slightly smaller chunk. Thank goodness you can pay online with credit cards. lol
In other news, the rain gutters will be paid off tomorrow.
No update this month. I'll update in May.
Oh, and the desk that I ordered in December was delivered last Monday. It's very snazzy. (link removed)

EF = $95,167.74 I paid off CC#3. I had a couple of big ticket expenses last month that affected my progress. I need to pay off CC#$ in full so I can transfer the balance on CC#1 to it. It's blatantly stupid that I haven't done this already. -movinonup

that desk is 🔥🤩
you should probably yank that link, though. I noticed a name and went link-clicking, and found my way back to your screen name. I have a shutterfly share site specifically for this board that only displays my screen name here. I can explain better if you'd like.

I can see the finish line...its SOOOO close now! We have the money to pay this loan off sitting in our checking account, we just need to make the drive over to Illinois where our loan is to make the final payment. (H wants to do it this way so we get the title in hand same day). I am so freaking ready to OWN my SUV free and clear!

light update this month, just minimums as I paid for some materials for spring projects (hello, outdoor shower! I've missed you!!) as well as paid for a couple March long weekend trips via my shiny new travel CC. I also paid down the projects card with the rest of my snowball. it's going to be light for a couple more updates, I've got a tree to take down (~$1k) and another trip next month that's paid for except expenses once I get there....and it isn't an all-inclusive cruise. creditor | start | previous | today | 1st National | $24,168.63 | $15,893.41 | $15,567.41 | Citi #1 | $12,826.10 | $9,297.68 | $9,147.68 | SMCU | $11,958.93 | $11,546.81 | $11,421.81 | Citi #2 | $4,394.29 | $0

You might want to check into SoFi and maybe consolidate onto a better payment schedule and be able to get some cards gone.
Still decent progress for you.

Still decent progress for you. CC#6 and CC#8 are at 0%. I put the standard APR on my table to show what it can blow up to. The actual interest charged is also in the table. Both are on schedule to be paid off before the grace period ends. -movinonup

I put the standard APR on my table to show what it can blow up to.movinonup clearly several of us have missed that you're not actually paying that much interest! Whew!!! That would definitely explain why several of us have encouraged you to do balance transfers! I think most people post their current interest rate, not what it will reset to. Great news, in any case!

UPDATE Chicg [2] 4/11/22, $3508 (11/7/14, 4217.34 MPT266).
Been a while, not sure why I haven't posted or update in so long. Lots of good updates, I read back since my last post in October. I've been really busy with two grad classes this semester, and everything else is just kind of more of the same. I'm really disappointed in inflation, and the housing and car market. Not sure if you remember but I was hoping to buy a car last year, I looked a little in the spring and was going to make the move after the semester. Prices jumped so high on used cars, I can't justify it right now so I'm holding on to being car-free for as long as possible. I'm not recognizing as much savings now with increased uber and rental fees, but I'm still saving overall by not having a car. I just really want one again after 4 years without (I work from home and live downtown chicago and would park in the street, so I don't want new and don't NEED a car, but I'm sick of dealing with public transit in bad weather and high crime.). I finally have enough savings for a down payment but this isn't the time to jump into the market for me, and I'll probably leave Chicago after my grad program so might as well wait it out.
I did take out a 10K federal student loan. I'm *hoping that's all I'll need for this grad program, I'll be 1/3 done after this semester and don't anticipate needing them for next semester as long as my work reimbursement comes though. That will get me to 50% complete. I won't be eligible for reimbursement of next semester so won't have any funds to roll into my January 2023 bill, but I have some saved and should be able to cash flow that.
Chiver, what CU are you getting 6% interest at? That's insane? Is it only for local residents? I'd love to find a decent bank to park some savings at.
Tax question I need someone to explain to me like I'm 5. I do my taxes on TurboTax but they've always been very basic, and I haven't had to worry about jumping tax brackets until now (for 2023 taxes). My raise bumped me into the next tax bracket. We can reduce taxable income with what we put to FSA and 401K, to get back into a lower bracket, correct? I do $1800 to FSA and 10% to 401K (although some of that is to ROTH 401K so I don't think that counts). Just the FSA contribution is enough to put me back into the lower tax bracket...am I missing something? I can seek out a financial advisor for this but *I think* it's a basic question so thought I'd ask here first.
I really need to commit to posting more, I'll wipe out the remaining cc debt soon, I put more of my bonus to savings than debt payment with inflation and all, but perhaps I'll start racing my student loans once I'm done to hold me accountable. The new one isn't due to pay yet but I still have $5K left of my undergrad loan. I was anticipating a car loan but that's postponed for now.

it's a local one, and it's only for the first $1k in the savings account. I don't even know what the rate is above that, because I only keep the $1k in there. anything else is in my high-yield American Express savings account. and, welcome back!

Your FSA and Traditional 401K contributions will reduce your taxable income, Roth 401K will not. Also remember that taxes are progressive, so if you're just 2K into the next tax bracket, you're only paying the additional taxes on that 2K, not your entire income.

Also, make sure you're looking at the right number when figuring out what your tax bracket is. It's based on your taxable income. Taxable income is your AGI minus your standard deduction. So as an example. $55,000 - Gross pay
-$9,000 - pre-tax contributions (FSA, traditional 401K, insurance premiums) _______ $46,000 - AGI -$12,950 - 2022 Standard Deduction (single) _______ $33,050 - Taxable income (12% bracket)

With the three large expenses this month--Federal, State, and a windshield replacement--it's going to take me a few months to get this tackled.
I put the Federal payment on the AmEx since it was at a $0 balance and paid it off when I got paid yesterday so there's no interest accrued there. The State and the windshield I put on the Visa. There was still a balance from March and these additional expenses will have me carrying over a balance the next couple months but that's how it goes sometimes.
I'm really glad that I paid off the gutters if only because that's one less demand on my income.
I submitted a claim to my insurance for the windshield. Unfortunately, my deductible was only $150 less than I paid BUT I'll be getting that $150 back so I'll toss that at the Visa when it hits my checking account.
I anticipate my mortgage payment going up in June. My property taxes went up a few hundred $$ and the allocation for my escrow account from the current payment isn't going to be enough to cover the taxes that will be due in October.
I also went back to work for my previous employer to help my replacement get trained up. This will save the boss from having to so AND I make a bit of extra money each month.

So, apparently, I overpaid on my State taxes.
I called the INDOR to find out what happened. I paid in $2XXX over the course of 2021, I paid the remaining $1XXX three weeks ago.
I received a check on Friday for $74.
Thank you, H & R Block for not doing math right. I don't like paying $200 for incorrect tax math. I can do that, myself, for free.
I called them and left a message for them to reassess. I mean, if they overcalculated on State, I have to wonder if they did the same for Federal.

commenting as a placeholder. I want to remember to check in tomorrow, a little early so some payments might not have posted. but I do need to pull the numbers for my spreadsheet before I leave for vacation at stupid dark early on Wednesday.

good morning! checking in from lovely Destin, FL. my work group is all in the office today from their varied remote locations around the country. the date was picked well after I booked this trip, so I'll meet those I've never met in person when we do it again next month. my boss added a call-in number to the face to face meeting invitation, at my request. but, I said mornings were quiet on this trip, so I'd try to call in. I checked in on a couple other things, and gathered current numbers for the chart as well. another light update, but still moving in the right direction! creditor | start | previous | today | 1st National | $24,168.63 | $15,567.41 | $15,230.37 | Citi #1 | $12,826.10 | $9,147.68 | $9,005.46 | SMCU | $11,958.93 | $11,421.81 | $11,296.81 | Citi #2 | $4,394.29 | $0
| $0 | BofA #2 | $7,820.39 | $0 | $0 | BofA #1 | $11,813.71 | $0 | $0 | American Express | $12,520.02 | $0 | $0 | Chase | $9586.41 | $0 | $0 | Discover #1 | $16,553.65 | $0 | $0 | Discover #2 | $14,278.26 | $0 | $0 | BCU | $12,304.92 | $0 | $0 | total | $138,495.31 | $36,136.90 | $35,532.64 |
chiver78 5/5/22 $35,532.64 (5/9/20 $138,495.31)

chiver78 I am always amazed at the progress you have made in two years. I never made enough money to cut debt that quickly.

Be sure to check your interest rates if they're active (not in promo) so you know how much additional interest you might be paying on balances.
My Visa went from 8.9% to 9.15% and AmEx went from 10.9% to 11.15%
ETA: This is the first change to my interest rates on these cards since I opened them many moons ago and I'm concluding it's due to the Fed rate change.

Yay nikiz628 ! Congrats on winning that race and owning your car!!! Great job moving in the right direction chiver78 ! I can't wait to see you apply the "full snowball" and obliterate that debt! nidena might it be worth trying to do a balance transfer for a card with a lower interest rate? Good for you for going back to your old job, even temporarily. I'm sure the money will help!

With Balance Transfers usually costing 3%, I'll pay less in interest in my current situation but I appreciate the suggestion.
The AmEx will be paid off come June 1st and the Visa should be back to being able to be paid off monthly come Aug.
The new person in my old job doesn't seem to be working out so my boss will probably be putting out feelers for a new person. I won't be throwing my hat in the ring for that but it does mean that I'll be helping out for longer so that I can train whomever is sitting in the seat; plus train the Admin Asst when they get hired.

nidena you wouldn't be interested in continuing to do that job part time?

nidena you wouldn't be interested in continuing to do that job part time? Nope. I don't want to have to remember all the things that need to be done for the boss. I tried that for 14 months and ended up with a migraine every week. Even when I dialed back to 30 hours a week, I still got the migraines. Providing training one or two afternoons a week will be plenty for me. If I didn't get the migraines, I'd still be doing the job. I was really good at it but it was taking too much of a toll.
