Some good news today. House was supposed to have closed at 3:30pm this afternoon. Will call in the morning to verify that took place and arrange to pick up the check. Got a refund check from the power company in the mail today. $209. I have no idea why. Went to the mortgage company's website and realized they had a payoff estimator. It's not 100% so I'll still need to call to get an official one. But since I sent in the November payment a month or so ago, I'll get a credit on interest of about $166. Woot!

House sold, got the check today. Turns out I can't pay the final amount using the system I make regular payments with, I have to send in a certified check or a bank wire. Hopefully I can wire it tomorrow when the funds become available.

womp womp. I ticked back up over $60k, but considering how badly I bled money this month, it could have been way worse! plumbing finally seems to be all set, and there's going to be some further repair expenses as I fix the water damage in the coming weeks. but, all of that is under control and planned for - I have some flexibility with the card I'm using for day-to-day expenses with a 0% interest rate on purchases until next spring. the dust has settled on the BT I did last week, in order to consolidate some balances and lower the effective interest rate. I couldn't fit all of the two cards onto the third, but the remaining balances are due to be wiped out by their December payments. creditor | start | 9/9 | interest rate | Chase | $9856.41 | $0

Chiver it sounds like it could have been a LOT worse! At least Mooch really came to the rescue!
It sucks that it's gone up, but again, it could have been a lot worse. Just blast it away as fast as you can!!! You're in a new home, Covid is here, winter is coming. I'd hunker down and blast as much debt as I could before spring comes and we can socialize outdoors again.
Best of luck to you!

Thanks everyone! Between clearing out both mortgages (old house and new) plus the carrying costs of the 3 houses we sold this summer, we've dropped our annual spend rate by over $50,000.
That's $50,000 that's not going out our door to bankers, insurance companies and to city and county property taxes.
It's a really big deal to us. It makes our retirement very financially secure and ups the odds that we'll be able to leave a lot for our two children. Since one of them is mentally disabled, that's a very big deal because I don't trust that the government will provide for her.
Y'all take care!
I'll drop in once and awhile to see how folks are doing and to say howdy.
PS -- we'll be giving away $12,000 of that freed-up money to charity, $1,000 a month. We're letting our son and daughter-in-law pick the charity in their birthday months, the rest of the time my wife and I will be alternating choices. I'm looking forward to it. Since our son may inherit a tidy sum we think it's best to get him used to the process of charitable giving. I expect he'll keep doing that as a memorial to us and maybe our 3 grandkids will be taught to do the same.

Well done Swordguy. Your determination and generosity are admirable! I love the idea of letting your DS and DIL choose the charities sometimes.
We are looking at taking on a new mortgage for a rental. We won't be debt-free anytime soon but I've really enjoyed following your story!
We're fine with having small mortgages on our rentals, so we won't be "racing" those. (Our home is paid off.) Best of luck to you!

I can't remember if I shared here or not but DS1 took a tumble on recess about 4-5 weeks ago and managed to break his wrist into his growth plate. Thankfully, just a crack, not a true break so he didn't need a cast. He's been in a removable splint since then. I am DREADING the ER bill. Our insurance doesn't cover crap until the deductible is met. $1,300 OOP so far. Ouch. Thank goodness for the EF.

Gahhh. Wrong direction since my last update. DS1 made a travel baseball team which also equals $$. We put some of the starting expenses on this card since it was unexpected (he originally wasn't selected, but then they cut a kid and called us to see if he still wanted the spot- cut throat lol).

Today I noticed that my bathroom has a window...on the outside. The previous owner installed a "bath fitter" over the whole thing, from tub top to ceiling, but it's still a functioning window...if it could be opened from the outside.

(But it's really easy NOT to notice things...) The second house we bought had a Jack and Jill bathroom, i.e., two toilets and sinks separated by a shared bathtub. The tub had solid, sliding frosted glass doors on both sides. We almost bought the house before realizing that's what it was! Would have felt really silly if we had figured it out afterwards, but honestly, it was just luck we noticed it.

Just scheduled the SL payoff. Once it clears, I'll cancel the auto-debit stuff. From five debts down to three: home, car, CC.

Hey everyone, been ~3 months since last update and really just staying afloat. Seating on alot of cash that is not earning much interest but suffering from the sky might be falling syndrome. Concerned that the minute I get ride of the cash something will happen and with the way it has been the past 3 months that may happen. The first plumber that fixed the bathroom downstairs botched the job so getting another plumber this weekend to look at it. Also dealing with rodent issues that will need to call the company in to lay some more traps. Fridge might need to be replaced and on the fritz, calling a repairman next week to get an idea. Closet in master bedroom fell apart and need to get it fixed/replaced. At least that forced my wife to donate a good portion of the clothes she has been keeping around for 17 years and some she will never ever ever wear. We don't have the space and not going to buy another house just to have the closet space. Added 5k to my TD card for the lawyer for my brother. Filed paperwork for him to get at least a social security card and a work permit while awaiting his court date. At least this way he can contribute somewhat vs just being at the house... his court date is not till January 2022. Last saw sign of mold in the basement and praying it is not as bad as I think it is. This house is old and it feels if it is not 1 thing it is another that needs fixing... Just want it to stop falling apart on us. 1 day at a time I keep telling myself, 1 day at a time. Now that the refinance is done and we should be back to somewhat normal, will try to update more often as I try to continue moving forward with paying this down ASAP.
