this chart says it all: this has major implications for most companies, but particularly for IT. comments? i noticed that Google is getting clobbered, and this "thinking" is part of it. mobile devices tend to connect directly to online retailers, which requires no search.

The smallest equipment I can/will use is a tablet with a 10 in screen. Anything smaller I have trouble reading. But then I am in my sixties and reading small print can be a problem. I imagine I might buy one of the larger IPhone type mobile units because commerce may just dictate that is how they are going to conduct business in the future, but I won't like it.
I WILL NOT TEXT. EVER.

We are still going to need more serious computing power as always for databases, etc. I haven't joined the smartphone crowd but mobile can be a laptop too, correct?

Yeah, I'm thinking that chart is "desktop" vs. "anything that's not a desktop... ergo mobile".

IBM reported this morning, and it was not pretty. Everyone is going to the cloud, and IBM is still playing catch up. IBM has to re-invent itself again as they did about ten or fifteen years ago, or they become the next Kodak. They did re-invent theirself once, maybe they can again.

My wife almost always text, and if I want the kids or grandkids to answer fast, I text. They are not capable of passing up responding to a text. A phone message may not get returned for a day from them. Now I text, and say where are my new pictures or videos of the family, and presto, all kinds of texting and pictures. Life is good!
Tenn, I suggest you start pecking away!

Old news to me- desktops are unnecessary wastes of space like a tube TV- and worse sort of tethered.
I admit I am amazed that the phones and tablets now play games that used to take a lot of power- and I am referring to games like Myst or Seventh Guest. But I should not be- it is just the huge curve- as a kid my Atari was amazing compared to the pong games.
The day I can't wait for is the first bankruptcy filing of a cable company Actually that's a bonus- I just want to be part of the mass exodus once Fiber hits and people get tired of paying for hundreds of channels of shit they do not want- there is a free market for you- if ten people watch your channel your channel sucks and I don't want it. It pisses me off to no end that I pay money for broadband to a monopolistic company that has the balls to force you to buy a package of shitty TV stations to get it or go without. What pisses me off even more is I have to pay for not only shitty channels- but they are channels that are already supported by commercials! Lucky Google fiber is likely coming- and if not- it scared AT&T into bringing a similar product- gigapower- to my town Cable can suck it nice and slow.

. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one here who had an Atari gaming system. DH and I had one in our 20's/30's - and used to sit for hours with the joysticks in our hands playing Pitfall, Asteroids, Space Invaders, etc. .

I text with everyone except my grandfather who would call after each text. The mode of communication has changed so much over the last 20-30 years, Implants in the brain are closer than we think.

Might want to direct that ire at the person that created the chart... they said "Desktop" and "Mobile" I'm fully aware that mainframes and servers exist (I learned COBOL Fortran and RPG II/III on an IBM System 34 multi-station, with tape backup... way back in the day

Ooooh - I forgot that one. We had it too. I think we had about a dozen different Atari cartridges. My old brain can't remember the name of all of them now though - except PacMan and Ms PacMan. .

LOL. Unless I can connect a standard sized keyboard to the phone to type my text, it is not going to happen.

So did I- we used to have 'tournaments' at each others houses- I still love certain games on the old Atari- Yar's revenge, Adventure, Missle Command- my upgrade was a C-64 in high school (But I did have a TI99/4A and a tape drive before that)
Once the Commodore hit I was launched into the worlds of Infocom- and every time I made a choice and the drive crunched for a minute I knew I found something Hard to explain Zork to a kid now- and I am not sure any of the wickedly great graphic games I play now are any better. Sure Skyrim is awesome- but the world I imagined in Zork was awesome- and I brought up Myst on another thread- but in the modern world it has visualized what Zork was- complete with puzzles that are actually hard. Not the easy bullshit obstacles in games like the new Tomb Raider or Drake.
And one other interesting point- I first played Infocom games on a main frame at my high school- went in on Saturdays to play sometimes- the first game- Enchanter- nothing but green text and imagination and it was awesome. I have early nerd credentials.

LOL... aahhhhh the memories of computer games played on the Computer Lab computers (ETA: Apple IIc's)... we only had one game. It was on 5-1/4 floppy and it was called "Taipan"... it was (I think) the first RPG made specifically for computers. Ohhhh... found some screen shots! and

Fortunately, you have warned me! That's all I need - another time suck! Marjar turned me on to that game. She's a pusher, dang it. I played her a few times. If you lose to an opponent you can request him/her to play again to win back your pride. "One more game. I'll play just one more game. Just one more game. I hate losing. Just one more." And then you look at the clock and it's 90 minutes later. Pitiful.

All this chart shows is the number of overall users of each type. Naturally more private individuals are going more mobile. Businesses will continue to use desktops. You are not going to walk into a call center and see workers taking calls on a Surface.

I have a laptop at work, which I put in a docking station so I can use a large monitor and a real keyboard. Do I count as a "mobile user?" My husband has 2 large monitors and a real keyboard at work. He hates doing any work unless he has both monitors.

Google isn't just a search engine anymore. They're in the information gathering and selling business. Mobile users are even better for them because mobile users give them more information, like location data, while using Google apps. the problem is that their model is largely geared toward internet searches from NON-cellphones. they need to move on or eat s*&t.

My Mom use to get really annoyed that my kids and I would text her instead of calling. Then she figured out that I may or may not answer a phone call, but she's likely to get an immediate response if she texts me. Now, sometimes if she calls and I don't answer, she'll text me, telling me to call her.
