I'm getting really sick of the phrase "an abundance of caution". Is this a euphemism for "rampant paranoia"? No, it's a euphemism for "we don't want to get sued and/or lose our jobs". "covering my ass"

If you want some NSFW giggles, image search Ebola condom. It popped up in my FB newsfeed today. Not only won't you get ebola, you won't get HIV, hickeys, fleas, etc.

OBAMA EBOLA First letters are vowels. Second letter in both words are a 'B'. Third letters are vowels (I see a pattern here). No letter separates the 'L' and the 'M' in the alphabet. Finally, the last letter in the name is exactly the same for each. Hmmmmmmmmm. Coincidence? I think not.

www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/10/21/photos-ebola-decontamination/17651551/If the 2 nurses recover, they have little to come home to. Photos released Monday offer evidence of how Ebola ravages the bodies — and the homes — of those it infects. The pictures offered by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality show the process of decontaminating the homes of the two nurses. They begin with crews in full hazardous materials gear outside Vinson's apartment, which is shielded from view. Tarps covered the ground as teams dug through her everyday belongings.
Photos of Pham's home after decontamination tell the story. The apartment looks practically the way it did before she moved in. The refrigerator and cabinets are empty, and only a few large items remain. They are proof of her life before the virus, and another symbol of how Ebola has turned it upside down.
In all, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality said it filled 53 barrels with Vinson's belongings, 21 from Pham and five from the City of Dallas. All were driven to a Port Arthur, Texas, facility, where they were incinerated.

It's a shame their identities were made known to the world yet I understand why. Rarely would this happen with any other disease.

In both cases, I believe it was the media (esp. local media) who rooted out their identities and publicized them first. The hospitals and CDC tried to keep their identities protected. The unnamed person who was just released from a CDC hospital was the only one who managed to stay anonymous and that's because the CDC had control over media coverage in their facility and respected his privacy.

I imagine though the U.S. ebola patients' circle of contacts would have been told the name of the person they were being questioned about by medical authorities and then the patient's name spread around near and far after that.

It depends on the circle of contacts. I'd like to think my friends and family would be discreet to my situation if asked to keep my identity private. But perhaps not. In any event, the Hazmat trucks in front of their houses would have further caused some publicity.

So photos can cause a threat, but the bed the slept on is a-ok? If anything I would have thought that'd be very likely to be contaminated.
How long does the virus live without a host anyways?

So, in actuality, if they just sealed up the apartments until they got out of the hospital/a few weeks all would be well. And could have been overly cautious by spraying down surfaces with the right disinfectant.
Hell - take the food, carpet, and even the furniture, wipe down what's left and the seal up the house for a few weeks. I don't see why they would need to get rid of pictures and books and all that stuff it looks like they got rid of. I'd be pissed at them incinerating family photos and such when it wasn't needed.

The CDC thing mmhmm posts said several days in bodily fluid. I figured extending it out exponentially to a few weeks would be an overabundance of caution. Basically, weeks should have been sufficent enough to silence the crazies instead of having to burn stuff that the patients likely never even touched after they started caring for Duncan. Like the photos don't show anything on the walls, I don't touch my photos on the wall except the rare occurrences when they get crooked. Did they really need to be destroyed?

Would you be pissed if you came home and someone had taken all your stuff and burned it? Many people have a new perspective about material possessions after a close brush with death. Like house burns down, tornado wipes out neighborhood. I would put surviving Ebola in that same category. I would be thankful I was still among the living to take new family photos and buy new things and I would bet that she is too. She will most likely be lucky enough get her dog back. I think she has every reason to be grateful and thankful and to be pissed off about any of those missing possessions would be a huge waste of emotional energy imo.

A tornado or fire wiping out my possessions is a freak accident. You would still be upset, though with no one to blame. Here people intentionally went through & threw everything she owned away. I would be incredibly angry.
This is more like having someone burn down your house on purpose & saying you shouldn't be angry, but rather thankful you weren't home when they did it. I can both be thankful for being alive & really pissed about my possessions at the same time. The neat thing about people is we have the ability to feel multiple emotions at once.

I could see not getting mad at them for burning a mattress (though from the pictures they left that, which boggles my mind since I think that would definitely come into contact with bodily fluids), but from the photos it seems they took everything. I may have a new lease on life, but I'd want to kill someone for burning the only pictures I have of me with my grandparents that died with little kids, or me with my friend that committed suicide, or the stuffed animal my grandma gave me when I was born. They may just be "material possessions" to you, but losing those would be a lot more to me. ESPECIALLY because they did not need to do that, the virus can only live at most for several days outside a host.

A tornado wiping out your home is different than all your stuff being burned unnecessarily. There was no reason to destroy her things. People are walking out of hospitals and away from car accidents everyday thankful to be alive. If I came home from bypass surgery and found out I was robbed, I'd still be upset. You can put it in perspective of "at least you're alive" but it still would suck.
