It's interesting that they don't even know if the closed schools in OH had any contact with either Ms. Vinson or her actual plane. Both paragraphs highlight the fact that this battle is not just about science or medicine, but about fighting the psychology of panic and fear even if it may have no basis.
www.nbcnews.com/storyline/ebola-virus-outbreak/ebola-fears-grip-cleveland-two-schools-shut-nurses-paid-leave-n227096
Cleveland Clinic and The MetroHealth System said employees — “mostly nurses” — who were aboard Vinson’s Friday flight from Dallas to Ohio were placed on paid leave and were being monitored but stressed there was little to no risk they had been infected. "The decision to put those nurses on paid leave really has to do with decreasing anxiety," said Dr. Jennifer Hanrahan, chair of the infection control committee at MetroHealth. "They are not at any risk, and I certainly wouldn't have sent them home to their children and their families if I thought there was any potential risk they would be infected.
A teacher who may have come into contact with Vinson was ordered to stay home and her elementary school, Cranwood, was “thoroughly cleaned with a bleach-based cleaning solution according to guidelines provided by the Center for Disease Control,” Cleveland Metropolitan School District said. Meanwhile, Solon Middle School and Parkside Elementary School — a few miles southeast of Cleveland — were ordered closed Thursday after a middle school worker “traveled home from Dallas on Frontier Airlines Tuesday on a different flight, but perhaps the same aircraft” as Vinson, officials said.
abundance of caution is always rubbing up against paranoia.

I think I have "little to no risk" of having been infected. Will someone please give me paid leave as well? I promise I will veg out at home for the next three weeks There is not a single guaranteed risk free place in the world to my knowledge (go ahead and make such a list if you disagree). You can die in your house, on the street, on a plane (which doesn't have to have an Ebola patient on board, they can shoot it down too you know). You can die eating, sleeping, pooping, whatever... So if you want to be perfectly safe the only thing left for you to do would be to die! Come on people a little common sense please.

I live near Denver, which is where the Ebola Plane has been hangared for cleaning. I feel like I should also have paid leave. ETA: Please, God, don't let me die pooping.

Maybe those that live in missile silos and those that are preppers are right.

More paid leave: www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/10/16/frontier-airlines-ebola-amber-vinson/17366797/the airline had voluntarily placed the flight's six-person crew — two pilots and four flight attendants — on paid leave for 21 days, the normal incubation period for the virus.
Also this: Frontier Airlines says it will remove the seat covers and carpets in the immediate vicinity of the passenger seat that Dallas nurse Amber Vinson occupied on a flight from Cleveland to Dallas the evening before she tested positive for Ebola.

The pilots are locked in the cockpit the whole time, aren't they? I mean, sometimes they wave as the passengers enter/exit, but they'd seem to be the safest people on that plane in any case. I'd be more interested in seeing the guys who clean the plane's waste put on administrative leave. An overabundance of overabundance of caution, I suppose, not to combat science but to combat psychology. Sigh...

Maybe those that live in missile silos and those that are preppers are right. The CDC is telling those with stocked missile silos and those that are preppers with bunkers to stay behind walls and remain underground for the next 100 years to be on the safe side. The current run of Ebola should be hopefully over by 2114.

Interesting headline writing by Yahoo. Why? I do enjoy the fact the article is almost the same length as the headline. I am curious as to which reserve they are referring to also because I know several people in different reserves and NG for that matter.

Most of the focus of Americans is on the current situation in this country. It would be an easy assumption from the headline that the Reserves and National Guard units would be activated to deal with the in country situation instead of them being sent to West Africa.

Since I am one of the ones that does not currently believe we are experiencing an outbreak or have a high risk of one, then I automatically assumed it would be for Africa. Not sure WTH they would do here at this time. I don't want anyone I know called up . And not cause of ebola, I wouldn't want them sent anywhere. I realize that being in the reserves means this could happen at any point, but still sucks.

If we have a national guard we can call up in case of an emergency, why are they not called to protect our borders from invaders? Of course, most of the invaders are already in this country now.

I don't know if they are right but you slip on the stairs in a silo, hit your head -> you die; you eat all that prepper food, get constipation and push too hard and pop a vein in your brain -> you die in Rocky Mtn Saver least favorite way to die

All I know is that there is a fine line between preparedness and paranoia. I have been tasked with creating a fast install patient barrier that ambulance crews can put up if needed- although we handle infectious patients on a regular basis and have the proper PPE equipment up to and including the beekeeper suits- somehow Ebola is special.
What it boils down to is duct tape and plastic sheets work fine So for anyone paranoid about this- for people flying on planes now wearing face masks- just put a hefty bag over your head and you will be fine

Or as I have suggested on travel forums: You can go home, lock your doors, crawl into bed and cover your head. I am seeing some deals starting to hit on a couple cruise lines where final payments are due in 60-90 days. I just may be abe to go away for about 2 weeks this winter if things continue to go CRAZY & prices continue to drop.

Am I missing the part where it says she was or is sick in any way? I would bet she had that cruise planned pretty far in advance. And she didn't even treat the patient like the nurses. She just handled samples that may have included that patient's. This story implies that she has ebola and is putting everyone at risk, but there is nothing in the story that backs that up.

Considering that Belize turned the ship back and is refusing to let her or any of the other passengers disembark, it may drop cruise prices for a little while.

My mom had heard on the news the person was showing symptoms. She is pretty sure it is a lab worker and she isn't surprised. She is a med tech and upset because every keeps talking about protection for the nurses, but she says the labs in most hospitals are in no way able to handle these samples and lab workers are going to be in big trouble. ETA-the story does say they are symptom free, so my mom is probably wrong. That is good.

CNN updated their story and removed the part about the other passengers being stranded on the cruise ship, so maybe that part was wrong. They also added that the nurse that flew to Ohio was showing symptoms for four days before her flight. www.cnn.com/2014/10/17/health/us-ebola/

The hard parts to this for me are the massively virulent nature of the virus added to a long incubation time before symptoms show up. just Short of putting the whole country on house arrest for 3 weeks I can't imagine what we could do that would totally stop this.

incidentally: the POLITICAL pressure for Obama to issue travel bands which are detrimental to the cause of fixing this are HUGE. we now get to see how principled he is. if he institutes travel bands, i am prepared to dismiss him as a purely political animal.
