I once visited a house for sale that not only had popcorn ceiling, there were little sparkly crystal things all in the ceiling paint. The house was from the 50's and that ceiling coating really collected the dust so it had an overall effect of an old stripper costume on the ceiling. I was in every single room - I was so distracted by it I don't know that I looked at anything else in the house.
A co-worker was also looking at houses and happened to tour that same house and thought the ceiling was the most awesome thing ever, so I guess it just wasn't my taste.

You just reminded me that my grandma's old house had the glitter popcorn ceilings!! Was it gold colored? She also had the genie bottle wallpaper in the bathroom. I saw the same stuff in her sister's house when I visited as a kid once. They lived 3 hours apart so it was a bit odd to me. To see the paper somewhere else not the paper. I liked the paper.

Textured walls are extremely common in California. I'd never seen them in Illinois, but have had them everywhere I've ever lived in California.

No this one was like shiny white crystals, not gold. For some reason, it really bothered me. Too much flashy stuff at ceiling level, which just seemed to highlight all the dust - and I remember thinking, how would you dust that kind of lumpy ceiling? If you vacuumed it would it suck the popcorn stuff off in patches, leaving you with a ragged half shiny popcorn ceiling and half not?

I'm guessing textured walls hide flaws better? I would like textured walls. Mine are smooth. Anytime there is a bump of furniture or anything against the wall, there is a dent or a scratch. I am always patching and touching up. I had textured walls in one of my houses years ago. Much easier to deal with. At max, just touch up with paint. I myself try to be very careful, but with guests... OTOH, with my experience, perhaps I could moonlight as a plasterer or a painter.

I'd be scrapping that stuff off in a hurry!

I've never seen a textured wall. I've seen nasty popcorn ceilings though. They were popular here years ago. There are textured walls in parts of my house. They are a bytch to paint! If given the option, I wouldn't want them in my new house, especially if it a new build and the walls aren't up yet.

Then you and I have the same taste because I think they are horrendous!

We passed on this house. Builder was accommodating on most things (even the walls), but we realized that the view we liked so much was going to be blocked once the neighbour's landscaping grew in. Without the view the other negatives (2 story, all bedrooms upstairs, small bedrooms over garage space) were too high. We were there last night and for 30 minutes straight another neighbour's dog barked. I hate house hunting.

I just wish the laundry was.

Also want one bedroom & full bath on the main in case we ever get hurt or disabled and can't do steps.

My biggest reason for buying a house.
Bought the last house in late '98. Sold it in early '06. Invested about $100K to buy the house. Financed the rest. Sold the house for a little over 2 1/2 time what we paid for the house. Appreciation in home value averaged about 80% a year on our invested capital. Not too many investments have that kind of ROI.
