Quote from Snopes: I found this online and it claims you can fully charge an iPhone if you put it in a microwave for a minute. I don't believe it but I keep seeing it on Facebook: "A smart phone microwaved for just one minute will fully charge the battery. In 2005 Apple started a smear campaign to discourage customers from using this method to charge phones as it would affect charger sales. Scientific studies shows that charging a phone this way is safe and is actually better for the phone's battery life as electric current found in mains can fluctuate and damage the battery cell." Read more at www.snopes.com/inboxer/hoaxes/phonecharge.asp#lmPBToDmUFi7QvrM.99This hoax was resurrected in September 2014 in conjunction with the release of iPhone 6 and iOS 8, this time in the form of a graphic that imitated the look of Apple informative advertisements and touted a purported new technology called Wave that would "become automatically activated when you update to iOS 8" and allow users to "Wave-charge" any device running that mobile operating system "by placing it within a household microwave for a minute and a half": Read more at www.snopes.com/inboxer/hoaxes/phonecharge.asp#lmPBToDmUFi7QvrM.99-------------- There are photos of ruined phones and microwaves.

That is awesome. To think someone just spends $400 on a new phone and then puts it in the microwave! LOL

You can safely warm up your kids in a microwave too if they have been outdoors playing in the snow too long also.

The funny thing, is if you believed this, you should believe your Samsung or Android OS phone would charge just as easily in the microwave.

WAVE is an iOS specific app... didn't you know that? It's not available on Android or Windows...

Anyone who thinks a battery can be charged without connecting it to anything and thinks microwaves can sub in for electrical current deserves a fried phone. Richard,
Just skimmed the Snopes link. The Waves thing is just a 2014 enhancement to the initial scam.
From the snopes link discussing the original scam of 2005: Origins: The spreading of information (like the graphic reproduced above) advocating the use of microwave ovens as a means for quickly recharging cell phones is nothing more than a type of Fool's Errand, a bit of flimflammery intended to lure the gullible into attempting absurd and impossible (and sometimes dangerous) tasks.
Apple had no need to launch a "smear campaign" to discourage consumers from using microwave ovens to recharge their cell phones, because that method simply doesn't work: microwave ovens emit radio waves, not electrical current, so they can't be used to directly charge standard cell phone batteries without additional adaptive equipment. Moreover, heating metal-based electronic devices to high temperatures is generally not a good thing, and the most likely result of placing a cell phone in a microwave oven will be that the phone will be ruined (and the microwave oven potentially damaged as well). The following videos show what typically happens to those brave (or foolhardy) enough to try it:

Well... there are "cordless" charging options that DO exist. (non-engineer that used to own a cordless razor that charged using "near field magnetic induction charging")

Non-engineers are generally aware that putting things with metal in them in a microwave is a very bad idea? Y/N?

Unless they haven't seen Mythbusters... I'd say "yes" (it's fun watching a ball of aluminum foil in one though... Like a lightning storm in a can)

I was amazed how quickly a couple of the phones caught on fire. Maybe I-phones are better. The one that was in the snopes video only smoked and it was in the microwave over 1 1/2 minutes. The other two seemed to start on fire under thirty seconds although maybe the cracked screen one was an iphone... Hmmm...
Richard, you shouldn't need to be an engineer to know how stupid this was, but it may help. I intentionally tried to fry components towards the end of one lab, just so I and my lab partner might know what to look for in the future. I know what fried silicon smells like, so I would cut the power immediately instead of the last video guy who decides maybe a bit more time in the microwave might be ... interesting.
