But other than that bit of uselessness above, Shast, I hear you. I haven't even started working yet and I already had to buy 4 plain polo shirts and 2 pairs of pants, not jeans. I get 2 branded polo shirts, no charge, eventually and an apron/jacket or 2.
Then of course, I haven't learned how to dress myself at 41, and managed to break a nail and do something to cause another finger to bleed when trying on the friggin' pants this morning. Jesus. There were no zippers on the damn things so I have no idea WTH happened!! I already had the shoes thankfully but did buy a pair of those Dr. Scholl's massaging gel insoles. I wear flip flops from March until the first snowfall. I do NOT do closed toe shoes well. And I haven't had a job that requires me to be on my feet in over 16 years. This is gonna suck. I need to go buy some epsom salts. And another bottle of vodka.

LOL When I interviewed I wore the only thing I had that was decent. I have a friend who gained weight and let me have some of her old clothing. Thankfully, she is a clothes horse with GREAT taste, so I got two great pairs of black slacks - that meet the dress code. Score. Bought two cheap pairs at Target when I was training. So, good for pants for the next year or two. LOL The shirts are hot. I take antidepressant medication which makes me sweat even more. I am not really wanting to risk day two... I am going to ask if I have to wear their branded shirt every day since my name tag also has their logo on it... Going to see if I can wear some shirts that look like theirs... Yesterday I ordered 3 new good bras. I have been wearing the same one, washed every other night, since I started training. It has given up the elastic and I am thrilled to be able to replace it. Yay. I had a roofing contractor out today to fix my skylights and give me a quote to do my roof next summer. It is supposed to rain tomorrow and I won't have to get out pots. Yay! It's the little things in life that are improving. I am working OT because I am currently lacking a customer service person for my store. They have someone traveling here, but they work at another store on Saturdays. I have the option of taking another day off, but I lose hours if I do that, so I am working company sanctioned overtime. I have 10 hours of OT this week alone. It's very tiring, but the cash will be nice. The last time they hired it took 3 months. Not sure how I feel about doing 6 days a week for that long... But, it will pay my past due property taxes.

$40 branded polo? That's insane. I make $13/hr working PT in the school district (MCOL). No benefits. I had to pay about $120 for random pre-employment stuff (background testing, CPR cert, etc.) in order to get my job. My job is just for extra money so it wasn't a big deal to me. But to people who are really struggling? Yikes. I also pay union dues, even though I don't get benefits. Shasta, I'm quoting SK's post because its shorter and its got the $40 amount. Wow. My guess is they might have logos on them... My PT employer is going to uniforms and I really should have asked how much each piece is, if we wanted more. As a PTer, I work 4 days(shifts) a week, and got two shirts and a blazer. The FTer was entitled to 3 shirts and works 5 days a week.
I'll probably go back to my Macy's work strategy. I took off my work clothes right when I got home, and sometimes hung them in the bathroom on the pole with the shower curtain. Sometimes the moist air from a shower or bath helps air them out. If I had a house with a clothesline I might air them outside.
Hopefully you can find a strategy for you that minimizes the amount of extra laundry you need to do. Good luck & hang in there!

If they say no to wearing shirts without a logo, think about doing your own embroidery on an inexpensive polo you pick up. Embroidery by hand isn't hard, just takes time and patience. No, your first homemade effort would not look exactly like their version, but it might be good enough to work in a pinch, especially for those days when you're pretty sure nobody from corporate will be dropping by...

Dansko are the best shoes for standing on my feet that I have ever found - surgeons use them for long operations. I find the slip-ons to be more comfortable than the clogs. Although they are frightfully expensive, once you know your European size, you can find new ones and slightly used for well under $100 on eBay.
Congratulations to you and keep up the great work - weight loss, getting in shape and now a new job - wow! You truly can do anything you set your mind to.

If I were one of your customer service workers and I found out that my green-as-goose-shit supervisor who was paid $3 or $4 more an hour for essentially the same work had requisitioned a third free jersey, or was making and wearing her own, I would not be impressed. That reaction would be magnified if company-approved OT were rare.
You'll have to do the other-person's POV exercise for your boss on your own.

Totally agree and if I were a supervisor and figured out how to embroider, one of the first ways I'd do a good deed for my team to get their trust would be to offer to do a few shirts for them as well...

I have been in that position (the lower down on the totem pole worker), and I couldn't have cared less about the shirt requisition. If someone is working more days, is goes to follow that they get/need more shirts.

I'm glad that you think that way, milizard, but I'd probably see it as abusing one's position and twisting rules from the get-go.

They don't need to know she got more shirts. Unless she says something, chances are they will never know.

I haven't had a non-desk job in 16 - last stand up job was bartending that I quit when dd was 2 and I went back to office/professional type stuff. I hate to go back to it FT at this point, feet concerns etc. But I wouldn't mind something PT that I enjoyed - like bartending, or at a vegan juice cafe, etc. I would not want to do something I wasn't good with - like a steak house or something It's FT. Yay me.

I asked today and was told I can wear a "non-logo" plain black polo or dress shirt. Yay! I am going to have both more comfort and a better appearance. I am sorry, but a polo doesn't look good on anyone... My point of the thread is that I think it is crappy of any company to pay their workers min wage and then make them buy expensive logo'ed clothing... I am really curious about the disparity in pay. I don't know if I am paid more because they have a hard time finding someone in my area for the job, or if it is the same everywhere. I find it odd that CSRs make $8-9 while managers make $15, yet do nearly the identical job. It's weird, but at least I am on the $15 side.

Ok, I get a baker's jacket to wear over it but still... I just went out this week and bought 4 plain polo shirts and I'm not fond of them either. I'm still more upset about wearing closed toe shoes. I hate wearing shoes. Unfortunately, flip flops are a health and safety hazard.

they tug at things pretty roughly.... I'm thinking of those drawer openers at ikea - that show opening and closing the kitchen cabinet drawer constantly, but on thongs..... **snort**... I'm sure it can't be cheap putting velcro and snaps in all your clothes to rip off. They don't exactly sell breakaway outfits off the rack.... Guessing you've never been to a strip club? They don't normally wear 'breakaway' outfits, they normally wear a strapless dress of some type, something easy to slide off. Underneath they'll wear a thong or t-back. And they spend an outrageous amount of money for the few yards of fabric used to make their clothes.
