Texas. There is definitely a problem in certain areas more than others. Our group covers parts of Louisiana as well and it's just as bad. I've taken part in a lot of runs coming from Broken Bow (I think that's OK) but I know Texas is horrible as well as Mississippi, Arkansas, GA, SC, NC. are you with a rescue? I am originally from OK and it's not any better there, either. I am with a wonderful rescue.

Curse this thread! This guy looking for a home is the same cross as my sweet Sadie that I had put down last Christmas. Awww, him I'd take. The girls, not so much. The Mastiff part = huge, shedding and drooly. The other part is on what I think of as the "scary dogs that are not for owners like me" and those are both things I try to avoid. I don't have the skills or the patience to work with a dog that might have aggression issues. And I want to be clear - this in on ME not a knock on the breeds.

I like big dogs but I'm not sure I would get one. When I was younger I always wanted an Irish Wolfhound. But big dogs have such short lives. They also tend to be stinkier. My dogs don't really smell like "dog" unless they have been out in the rain or rolled in something. Their feet smell like nachos but other than that not really stinky like dog. My brothers pug-a-poo has the dog smell all the time. My oldest dog is just the perfect size to fit under my arm like a football. She likes to snuggle into the side of my neck at night. I have come to believe though that it doesn't matter how big your dog is - they will take up the entire bed at night. Our local shelter is - meh. The only dogs they EVER have on their website are big lab/rotties or lab/pits or shephed/lab mixes. Which is fine if you want a big dog. If you want a small dog - you have to physically go to the shelter every day to see what they have. Unless it is a small dog with issues - then it makes it to the website. There was a court case in our area (hmm wonder what ever happened), a local woman runs a rescue shelter. Then there is the SPCA which generally is in charge by the government to provide enforcement and rescue animals but they are notorious for never doing anything. So last winter we had some big snow storms, a guy was plowing out someones driveway and saw the doghouse was all snowed in. He wondered if the dog was tied to it. He plowed the doghouse out and yes, the little dog had been trapped in its house for 3 days. So they called the SPCA. But when the SPCA came they were like, well the dog has food, water and shelter and is all plowed out now so there's nothing we can do. People were outraged. The local woman basically took the dog. Brought it for much needed vet checkup and dental work and someone else "adopted" it. The owner pressed charges for theft. Technically yes it was, but morally? People crowdfunded her lawyer fees. I'm not sure what happened after that. They just passed some tether laws in our province, partically because of the above case, whereby you cannot tie a dog outside between the hours of 11pm and 6am for more than 30 min and the owner has to be outside within 25 m of the dog. The problem is how can they enforce this? They can barely afford enforcement during the day. I just wonder about people who have pets and then neglect them. If you knew there was a big snowstorm coming - why would you leave your dog outside??

My dogs have never "stayed outside." Yes, they go out and run around, and hang in the yard, but they always come in at night.
Except when Muggins rolled in dead eel. She had to stay outside after that, until I could get the smell out.

This is why I love my aussie. Whenever we use carpet fresh on the carpets, she rolls in it. I have a friend who is very jealous because her dog rolls in the dead grass.

Mine liked to roll in cow afterbirth. Dayum. You win the yuck factor. That's an odor you'll never forget. I always loved calving season. But, to be fair, I'm guessing most dogs would roll in it, they just don't have the wonderful opportunity that mine did. All farm dogs seem to be drawn to afterbirth. I think it's an instinctual mask their own scent thing. And boy does it ever.

However, eating the hoof trimmings from the farrier- totally fair game.

Well Rae, my dog has never rolled in anything. because you live in an area where there is nothing to roll in.
I live in the country and on a river. I have room to let a dog run. Dead fish and eels wash up all the time, and various animals die around my property. They're gonna roll in it and there is nothing I can do to stop it.
Unless I keep my pets penned up, or on a leash at all times, which I am not willing to do where I live.

No. She wouldn't wander. Neighbors don't care if dogs go over there.
I'm pretty far away from the road. More worries about dog swimming away than getting hit by car.
The dog I had was great, and wouldn't wander. If I got another dog, it would not be left outside to wander unless I was out there, until it was trained to stay near the property.

My dogs were only kenneled when I was gone, otherwise they had the run of the place.

Yeah, I'm going to stick with my cat. Babybird will have to be content with her goldfish for the next 16 years

I have not read the entire thread, but, with a toddler, I would definitely choose a medium or larger dog, just for their sturdiness. I have 3 small dogs and although all three have always been great with babies and toddlers (my nieces) I would still worry about a fall and seriously hurting the dog. Two of mine are rescue mutts (Chihuahua mix and Silky Terrier mix) and one is purebread (Maltese). I have had my Malteses since he was 12 weeks old and got the other two as adults. Guess which ones are calmer, better behaved, and have had less health problems?? The rescues! Not that I would give up my Maltese for a second, but "paying" for a full breed dog does not guarantee ANYTHING. Just my experience

My dad's gorgeous white Siberian Husky likes to roll in fresh shit of any variety - bird, bear, dog, whatever. And he's sneaky and quick about it. You're walking with him and suddenly he dives face first before you can stop him and is covered in fresh poop. ugh. He gets lots of baths and hates every one of them, but apparently has yet to figure out the correlation that rolling in the poop = bath time.

Ugh! Ugh! Ugh!!!!!!! Gross!
All these disgusting dog stories reminded me of my own funny/gross dog story. A few months ago Babybird was playing on the lawn barefoot and she managed to step in a HUGE pile of dogshit that some asshole didn't bother cleaning up. I cleaned off her foot as well as I could with baby wipes and then took her inside to wash her feet with soap in the sink.
She kept exclaiming "Ew! Ew! Yucky!" and pointing to her foot with a very distressed look on her face which I found hilarious (I'm evil like that). I kept reassuring her that it was no big deal and we'd get her cleaned up.
When I finally did get her cleaned up, she refused to leave the house again for the rest of the morning and kept pointing to the unlucky foot and screaming "Yuck! Icky! Ew!" I kept telling her the yucky was all gone but I guess she could still feel it.

If you smell like bear shit the bear won't know you are really a Siberian Husky(at least until he sees you).

I'm pretty sure I did write it up for Facebook but I didn't take pictures. I was kinda grossed out and didn't think of that, but yeah - her face was pretty funny and so was her PTSD (Poop Traumatic Stress Disorder) the remainder of the day.
