...aaaand the feminists are upset because of it, claiming the roofie-detecting nail polish is part of 'rape culture'. I'm open to having a wide-ranging discussion about the party lifestyle on many college campuses which I think arguably accepts, if not outright promotes all manner of debauchery, including rape. In fact, I'd probably ruffle a few feathers by commenting that if a woman thinks a date-rape-detecting nail polish is necessary, perhaps the situation is one to be avoided altogether? Alas, if she consciously chooses to participate- what's wrong with some protection? m.nationalreview.com/article/386267/feminists-say-roofie-detecting-nail-polish-actually-also-rape-culture-katherine-timpfA group of college students have invented a nail polish that changes color if it comes into contact with date-rape drugs. Many see it as a useful invention because it might help women protect themselves, but, of course, some say anything that might help women protect themselves is actually offensive to women because that promotes rape culture. “Women are already expected to work hard to prevent themselves from becoming the victims of sexual assault,” an article in ThinkProgress argues. “Now, remembering to put on anti-rape nail polish and discretely slip a finger into each drink might be added to that ever-growing checklist — something that actually reinforces a pervasive rape culture in our society.” Some opponents were outright angry at the invention. “I don’t want to f[***]ing test my drink when I’m at the bar,” said Rebecca Nagle, one of the co-directors of an activist group called FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture. “That’s not the world I want to live in.” The fact that fear of whether or not someone could be wearing the polish might deter potential rapists from drugging women’s drinks was not addressed. The nail polish is an invention of Undercover Colors, which calls itself the “First Fashion Company Empowering Women to Prevent Sexual Assault.” — Katherine Timpf is a reporter for National Review Online.

Yes, what are women thinking, expecting to be able to go out to a bar with their friends for a few drinks? Best to stay home singing 'Nearer My God To Thee', behind locked doors and windows, under the protection of their husband or father, who of course keeps plenty of guns and ammunition around to kill all the pervs who try to break in. And if they would just wear sensible clothing, maybe a head to toe sheet or something, so as not to make all the pervs think sexual thoughts about them.

Look, DDs water was spiked at a country western bar. Fortunately she and her friends had just arrived. She was always the designated driver. The girls took her home and she was "out" for two days. That bar was known for being a safe place for women. I've been there myself. It happens.

I consider myself a harm-reductionist. If you can explain the chemistry behind this and can demonstrate that the dry nail polish color-shifts enough that a buzzed person in a dim bar can see it, I'll be willing to consider it further. Otherwise, you can take your over-priced false-negative producer and ....

I have no problem with the nail polish if it works and is proven to be non-toxic. If a woman wishes to avail herself of that protection, and the protection is available, I'd have nothing to say about it. That would be up to the woman. Failure to wear it, however, would not excuse anyone who gave someone a drug without that person's permission, and it would not excuse rape.

Yes, protection from rape is a better word. I think it's ok to protect yourself against eventualities. But you prevent rape by STOPing the rapist... The impetus should not be on the victim to STOP an assault.

In an ideal world, there wouldn't be any rapists. That's not where we live.
In the real world, adding any layer of protection is a bonus in my mind.
Think of it as a "mood ring" for young women. Instead of turning colors depending on their mood, it changes color when they are in danger.
I wish they wouldn't drink to much, or leave their drinks unattended or trust the wrong person. But since that will sometimes happen, another layer of protection is a win.
I'll be keeping an eye on it's effectiveness and I would absolutely buy it for my daughter, assuming it works as advertised.

The real issue is that young women across our nation have attended orientation seminars at college about how to protect themselves from date rape but there are no corresponding seminars for the young men telling them not to rape young women.

I think it's a sad reflection on our society a product like tis had to be invented. But, since it has it's place, I'm all for it.

The free market already has a better way to prevent rape.

I`m a feminist and I have no problem with the nail polish. I put it in the same category as burglar alarms and pepper spray. However, we also need to become unambiguous in the message that all the responsibility for rape is on the rapist.

Bitches be cray cray. My daughter actually read about this before I did. As a non-jaded 15 year old, she td me this was a great idea because there are sickos out there so girls need to be careful.
I don't understand how anything that we can use to keep ourselves safer could be negative. I certainly don't understand why feminists are always up in arms (and that is why I never want to be considered a feminist....they seem crazy to me!)

I don't think anyone is 'up in arms' that there is something out there to help protect women.
I think the issue is with the idea that it's a woman's responsibility to prevent rape....

Why do we always have to weed out rapes when we are talking about keeping ourselves safe? I tell my daughter that there are certain areas she is not allowed to go to. This is a free country and she should be allowed to go there. But there are gang bangers living in those areas (or wannabees). It is her job to keep herself out of situations that can get herself killed, raped or hurt. No, she can't prevent everything but there is also no reason to so something stupid...like putting your drink down in a bar, walking into the ghetto at 3 am, getting into a car with someone that has been drinking, etx

Sounds like a good product- but if you think the free market can prevent rape......Some rapes maybe. You could legalize prostitution in the USA- might prevent some rapes as well- but you will never get rid of rapists- some people are just defective.
Whatever you do though- make sure a rape victim is forced to carry a rapist's child to term That is- if the vaginal rape response hormones don't kick in and shut the whole thing down

I think most of us agree. If it helps protect and is safe, let's use it.
But look at the OP ... Read "The free market finds a way to prevent rape"...
So, the focus, the 'solution' is for women to do something, the cure, the prevention is a free market consumer good, and it's a woman's responsibility to use it to prevent assault... ??

Create a pill for guys which lowers their libido. Put the responsibility back on them. Like that would ever happen.

Do you not understand that a rape isn't about the sex? It's about the power and control - the sex is used as a weapon to control and humiliate. It wouldn't matter if prostitution is legal and the rapist had sex 16 times that day, he'd still rape. Dear Lord! This is already a horrendous enough situation without someone suggesting that if a man could buy sex or have sex whenever he wanted, he wouldn't feel the need to rape. And by the way, you just admonished someone in another thread about bringing abortion into a thread that wasn't about that topic and you do the same thing here. Why is that ok?

Well, that's one poster's opinion. Its not accurate as it only would help in the instance a drug was introduced into your drink, so just hopefully protects one from just one avenue of potential sexual assault.
I guess you are supposed to use a gun on your date, BF, husband or other man you know that gets out of control and attempts to rape you.

Riiiiiiiiiiiight. I may be dense and I'm not disputing that, but I know rape won't be stopped - or even slowed down - by legalizing prostitution. Misinformation like that just pisses me off.

Its as if I decided I never wanted to be conservative about anything including finances just because there are conservatives that say crazy things such as women are protected from becoming pregnant after being raped because the body has a way to shut that down.

I'm mad now! I specifically posted that to point out that rape is about power and control and that while legalizing prostitution might stop some rapes it would not stop them all, nor would any law. Reread it and think- I am highly offended by your accusation.

The free market already has a better way to prevent rape. That doesn't work too well if you are already unconscious. You need to Photoshop the nail polish onto this pic.
