WWBG: I live in an area that still has over 9% UE. We've been told on the news that contractors are hurting for work. However, they still aren't slashing their prices from what they were.

Our local unemployment hit over 13%, but it never really seemed to affect people. Restaurants stayed full, little overpriced clothing boutiques didn't go out of business, the mall seemed as busy as ever. On one hand you had the news stories about how hard people had it, almost always because they got hit by the housing bubble which did hurt people here in CA, but on the other it didn't seem like anybody really had to cut back their spending. The housing bubble definitely got some people, because we looked at $280k short sales and foreclosures that had been purchased for over $600k a few years previously, but the recession didn't seem to change a thing around here. Honestly I'm not even sure how hurt people were by the housing decline. I think a lot of them had very little in the house, purchased on 80/20 or 80/10/10 loans in a lot of cases, so it's not like they personally lost the several hundred thousand. The banks got hammered, and a bunch of people that couldn't really afford their house in the first place got free rent for 6-18 months while their short sales and foreclosures processed.

My husband nor I in our 65 years never had recessions when they came, we worked, we lived, the same in high or low earning years, nothing to excess. We were never hurt. He is unemployed now but its due to the countries government where he worked, not because of anything else. They put the project on hold because of money woes we think. Now whether he will get out again is to be seen. He is almost old enough to retire but doesn't want to, that decision may be made for him. But whatever we are prepared, we always stayed prepared, learned it from both sets of our parents.
Man, karma for this post when my powers return. Such a great way to live your life (and so well said!).
I agree with most of the posts here. Victim mentality pisses me off and I'm pretty much always sick of it, so I'm not a fan of the recession giving people an extra excuse. If you didn't plan ahead when you had the chance, you get little to no sympathy from this one.

I just read another flimsy "in this economy..." excuse. A mega-church nearby is going bankrupt. They over-extended themselves with mortgage debt and the pastor, until recently, was getting a salary of $400K. His son-in-law was on the payroll for $180K; wife and 2 daughters collected another $100K combined. The church finances were known only to a small group of insiders until the local paper started digging into them a couple of years ago. Donations are now down. "It's the economy", according to the church leadership.
Ugh, that makes me sick. I don't even feel like ranting about it. It's just pathetic.

while I agree with most- I will not pretend the recession didn't happen. Anyone have a friend that live(s)(d) in Detriot?
However, people do need to move on, move away, and do what they have to. Those that use the recession as an EXCUSE to do nothing piss me off. But some are doing what they can, going back to school, etc- and I can't fault them.

Detroit was stagnating way before the current recession.

W also have over 13% unemployment still and our housing didn't budge for most of the recession till recently. Houses took longer to sell but the price didn't drop much. I am tired of every part of this recession. I am tired of hearing about it. I am tired of listening to people talk about how it is someone own fault. I am tired of listening to people pat themselves on the back explaining how they weren't effected because they did everything right on purpose. But mostly I am tired of living it.

My husband and I have not only not been affected by the recession, I've been able to pick-up two investment properties for 30% of the sales price in 2005. I feel bad for those affected but I feel fortunate to have been able to take advantage of the situation.

Well Dark I bet the people who are sickest of the recession are those who have run out of UE and are still looking for a job. I suggest you count your blessing instead of whining about how tired you are of hearing about the recession. Imagine if you were LIVING the recession. Even plenty of people who did everything 'right' have hit rough times right now. I try to start everyday by counting my blessing and having gratitude that so far, so good. And I pray for those I care about who have been impacted by these challenging times.

I am more sick of hearing about Charlie Sheen than the recession.
