My bi basement freezer died last fall & I now only have the kitchen side by side. I went over te top shelf on Thur and found 2 1 lb pkg of ground beef (surprise). I thought I was out of beef. I also have 2 1/2 lb of ground turkey which I did know about.
Also found a serving of steak and a mystery pkg.
Need to review the other shelves as a pkg of asparagus is MIA.

when one lives alone, I don't really see the need for several freezers.

I was thinking of a slow cooker with some onions and a can of cream of mushroom soup.

I was thinking of a slow cooker with some onions and a can of cream of mushroom soup. Everybody knows you have fava beans and a nice Chianti with that.

I found this in my freezer. What should I do ?? Move it out of the way, so you can get to that nice chilled bottle of Shmirnoff.

I went foraging in my freezer the other night, to take an inventory of what's in there. Everything is now nicely organized, with each shelf having one specific type of food ... so it's easier to keep track of things.
For some reason, I thought it was important to be REALLY stocked with sugar free popsicles and sugar free otter pops ... so now I need to make an effort to eat them!

Iced Swamp I did NOT live alone when I got my now dead, big, basement freezer in 1973 (it wAs WAAAAY past its expected life). Had a hubby then followed shortly thereafter by a couple of kids. I have no plan to get another freezer.
I have not yet gotten up the gumption to tackle the other 2 shelves.

My freezer is early 1970s Sears. It gets churned up looking for a specific item. I know there are two ice creams in there and I need to get one out.
I take notice when the ground meat gets low. We like casseroles to extend the meat.
Around December, everything is in it's place.

marvholly, when my Mom was still living in her apartment she had a small 5 cu ft (I think) that just fit perfectly in her kitchen. That way she could make her soups and stews along with muffins etc. and have a place to keep them without filling up the small freezer with the fridge.

BG I have no place to put even a small freezer in my kitchen, nor do I want one. The side by side shoud be >enough for a single person even with cooking chili, soups, meat loaf, meatballs, salsbury steak & stews ad I do. I pretty much devote 1 shelf to most pre-cooked stuff.

When our current fridge dies and gets replaced, I want a freezer on the bottom We lose a lot of freezer space right now with in-the-door filtered ice and water.

Freezer on the bottom is like having a chest freezer. I KNOW I would lose/forget a bunch of stuff.

I have a freezer on the bottom, Above are 2 "French" doors. I lose space because mine is counter depth. It's OK for the 2 of us, I don't think a family with kids would be quite so good.
I love the bottom freezer, ice maker is on the upper far left, no dispenser. 2 wire coated shelves pull out so I can see what is there, and the bottom is rather an odd shape that collects a lot of miscellaneous items that don't fit on the shelves. But like many new fridge/freezers, pizza boxes won't fit no matter what you try to do. My freezer in the garage is not a super large upright, it works well for us.

We have a side by side. The freezer has several shelves, two wire baskets, two in door shelves, and a tiny in door shelf which will hold a small box of frozen veggies, or leftover celery, etc. for stews or soups. The bottom basket holds proteins. The next one up holds veggies. The shelves hold frozen labeled leftovers, and a frozen gallon of water each (to take up space). The top shelf has extra ice cube trays, and the blue frozen plastic packets for DH's lunchbox. The ice maker and container do take up a lot of space, but it is worth it, IMO. The best thing I started doing this year is labeling leftover plastic containers so there are no guessing games before thawing. And, marvholly, I finding a package of ground beef or chicken breasts I didn't know was in there. It helps the budget and menu planning just that much more.

I was looking in the freezer over the weekend and found a beef roast which I will be making in the crockpot in the fall. I do a spicy roast. Place the roast on the bottom of the crockpot. Get 1 jar of peppercini's (I use the sliced) and pour the whole thing in the pot. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning mix -- packet or spices - i use the spices to lower the salt content. Cook all day on low. The meat falls apart and the juice makes a great aujus - zingy but good. Add a salad and you have food for days!

At our new house we have a side by side. I was organizing it a couple of weeks ago, and found some leftover frozen waffles - not stored properly in the back, taking up a lot of space. Otherwise I organized everything else, and I am able to find things easier now.

It's about this time of the pay cycle where "living", aka, cooking out of the freezer really helps. I receive a monthly commission check on the 15th, and therefore, except veggies, eggs, etc. shop once a month. This week's meals will come from the freezer until I go shopping: Cod for fish tacos, ground beef for a meatloaf, a portion of zucchini casserole from July 22, and a leftover frozen cheeseburger patty for me for a lunch this week. These will be paired with frozen veggie mixes which were bought on sale w/ a coupon several months ago. Viva la freezer!!!
