I am watching MSNBC and am totally amazed by the technology. Watching Steve Kornacki in front of that huge touch screen, seems there has been a big jump even since 2012.

Really upset they are not covering the ballot initiatives and barely covering the governships- the only reason I am flipping over to those channels.

Looks like the Republicans just took the Senate.
CNN has them with 51 seats.
ETA: and the Republicans kept the House. CNN has them with 222 out of 435 (over half), as of right now

Govern? How? Well actually they could do a better job if they wanted to- can't wait to see what they do- will either be the worst congress ever or make some compromises and do a little work. I bet on the former but we shall see.

summary:
the GOP did about 3% better in the states that they were favored to win. Democrats did about 3% better in the states that THEY were favored to win.
there were three exceptions to this:
1) Louisiana, where it looks like Landreau actually beat her GOP opponent, but only because the Libertarian siphoned off 1/7th of the vote. 2) NH which went just as predicted: Shaheen winning by 3% 3) KS, where Roberts WHALLUPED Orman, even though Orman was predicted to win by 3%
polls in AK are closing. based on how it has gone so far tonight, Sullivan should win by about 5% (my model shows 2%)

NH is being called for Shaheen. congratulations to Scott Brown, who, having lost to three women in three tries, has raised the bar for feminists everywhere. Don't worry. I hear he is eyeing some real estate in Maine.

Listening to the results it appears that this was a MAJOR 'throw all the bums out' year. Now. if only the replacements actually can & do govern.
NO hope of that in IL with our entire legislative branch in heavy democratic control. We will be joining DC in TOTAL gridlock.

NO hope of that in IL with our entire legislative branch in heavy democratic control. We will be joining DC in TOTAL gridlock. If the Republicans are smart and recognize this is not a "we love conservative republicans' year but a 'throw all the bums out' year and act accordingly - actually get congress to act on some issues that are important to middle class Americans and stop being the party of 'no' - then two years from now a Republican candidate might win the presidential spot. If, however, Republicans continue to fight amongst themselves and continue to rail against anything Obama has tried to do without offereing a better solution (such as insisting we repeal Obamacare without offering anything better than the shitty system we had prior to Obamacare) then two years from now we will have another 'throw the bums out' election and this time it will be against the Republicans, and it will be for the presidency. Personally I don't think the Republicans will be able to pull it off - their party is too fractured, too much infighting, too many republican congressmen leaning too far into libertarian or TEA party territory, too many of them fixated on appeasing their hard right religious base by wasting time on social issues like abortion and gay marriage. Democrats certainly are not a cohesive bunch but you don't see so many of them grandstanding on TV like Paul and Cruz do.

I'm going to move this into the ongoing thread about the elections. We don't need several threads talking about the same thing. Let's maintain some continuity.

Since we're talking about who won and where, I'm going to merge this thread (Election Day) into dj's thread on the 2014 elections. Let's keep the discussion in one place for continuity. mmhmm, Politics Moderator

Don't worry. I hear he is eyeing some real estate in Maine. He told someone yesterday that he was born in Maine. Really?
Speaking of which, sad day for the Pine Tree State, as Governor LePage is re-elected to four more years. Late night comedians breath a sigh of relief.
there is no excuse for that. make sure to tell your fellow Mainers (sic?) that i said so.

Sincere thanks to djpolldancer for this long and well informed thread that followed things through the campaign season. Excellent reportage and cool interaction made it an informative and entertaining source of current political news- at least for me.
Congrats to the Republicans in general; a very good election for the GOP. thanks, dem. i TRIED to stay on top of it. i missed a bit on this one tho. as much as i felt the GOP would do well in this election, they did about 3% better. for example, i NEVER expected Virginia to be competitive. Warner was expected to win by 10% there. i thought Hagan would win by 1-2%. i thought Orman would win Kansas. none of those races produced the results i thought, and on every occasion, it was the GOP that outperformed. i can't think of a single GOOD surprise for Democrats, and i can think of a handful of bad ones. in short, this was a SURPRISINGLY good year to run as a GOP candidate. hell, our team even got THREE NEW REPS from CA, which is kindof amazing all on it's own (one was a total surprise).

Well, then they can expect another wave of disgruntled voters pushing them from office and electing a democrat in 2016. Voters aren't voting for parties, they are voting against whatever party appears to be the one in charge for the moment. I don't understand why politicians haven't figured this out. Congressional approval numbers couldn't make it more clear. It's like two mules fighting over a rotten turnip. We pay their salaries and they suck.

We pay their salaries and they suck. there were some important lessons that non-partisans could learn from this election, but i would bet my left nut that partisans won't take them to heart. apart from the general whooping that Republicans gave Democrats, there was something really unusual to happen "down ticket" which presents a bright light moving forward: the rise of Independents and third party candidates. if you look at what happened in KS, LA, AK and SD, you will see that down ticket candidates won big this round, or in the case of KS and LA, created one hell of a stir. it might be possible to form a third party at this juncture, because so few candidates are in the middle. the GOP is crazy right wing, the Democrats have not been more liberal in half a century. there is a vast territory between them that can be exploited by Independents, and that is a great hope for the nonpartisan. i hope the blush doesn't wear off this time, and that Independents keep pushing forward, and running candidates. it might make for some REAL change.

Here is an absolute correct prediction, Two more years of political corruption, political games. wasted money, and resources. Just more of the same, different party. No great leadership anywhere in sight.
