I'm sure you're going to end up with a Tahoe, but I think you should keep the Subaru for yourself and get DH another sedan with good gas mileage. I have two siblings and we grew up perfectly fine with parents who only drove sedans. The ultimate positive, you don't get stuck hauling around other people's kids!

While the idea of having a car that can fit more than 5 people is very appealing....I can't get over the cost of it. I also very much like my Subaru.... But we do need to figure something out. Yesterday I was without a car and kids missed out on an activity in a library bc my husband had to take Subaru. I just don't know why our 17 yr old Nissan can't be more reliable!!

You can probably get an older Tahoe for reasonable, but the gas is going to still be a killer. My truck was completely paid for, but I still couldn't justify the extra $200/month I was spending on fuel. It was like Chinese water torture every time I was at the pump. I kept thinking, man...the car would cost $40 to fill (this was several years ago). The truck was about $80-$90 at the time and went the same distance.

Seeing Knee Deep in Water Chloe say she gets 7-10 mpg towing, which I realize isn't an every day occurrence, made me stop breathing for a minute.

When I was shopping for cars, I looked up the back seat leg room on Edmunds of my current cars, and then looked up every car I wanted to drive. I was able to eliminate dozens of models of cars without stepping out of the house. Granted, those measurements are not perfect. The car I bought has the same number of inches as my old one, but is functionally 2 inches smaller. But, it was easy to tell. I was shocked at how small the back seat was in most of the small SUVs (non-3rd row seat) and cross-overs. Better off in a sedan. I didn't look at any of the SUVs with a 3rd row. The really big SUVs with 8 seats generally have a huge 2nd row, but those ones where they just shove an extra seat in could have some really weird dimensions.

The Ford Expedition has more than enough leg room in both back rows. We often have adults back there and they always comment about how spacious it is.

But seriously, when we chose to purchase the Expedition and the camping trailer, we made the cognizant decision that we were not going to take vacations that didn't involve them. We don't fly anywhere; we haven't left the West Coast. Literally. My children have never been on an airplane. My stepsons have only been on one when the younger one went into the Navy. He flew to Chicago for basic. He flew home for Christmas. The older one flew out for the younger one's basic graduation (which the younger one wasn't actually allowed to participate, but that's another thread.) That's it.
It's all about choices. I could have taken that $2200 and gone on one vacation to Mexico for a weekend instead of the 18 nights since June 27 that we've spent camping or hanging out in San Francisco. Taking the trailer to San Francisco meant we didn't have to pay $250/night for a hotel and we could cook breakfast and lunch in the trailer. Instead, the travel trailer is what we choose to do for our recreational time.
Today, DH left for a conference. He's taking Fjord (that's its name). He's taking two co-workers and a whole bunch of stuff for the conference (projector screen, projector, two other crates full of stuff, and 13 gift bags I made for his staff). There's more than enough room for all of that, plus their luggage, and their bodies. Now, he'll get reimbursed for that mileage, and it's hecka convenient for him to be able to cart all that around the state.
The convenience of being able to go to Costco once per month and only have to purchase dairy, fruit, vegetables on a weekly basis saves me a huge amount of time and money. But, I couldn't fit the Costco purchases in my little car with my children in it.
I absolutely understand both sides of it. It's a ton of money, and goodness knows I could have saved that money or paid down one of the houses I own or my student loan debt. But, for me, the convenience of having the bigger car is worth the cost.

I miss our old Explorer!!!

Yikes, I cannot comprehend these single-digit gas mileages.

Wow - we get pretty decent mileage in the Pilot. And I'm guessing that none of the doors have fallen off it either.

If they bury me in it when I die of old age someone will say "It is a shame, that Honda only had 750,000 miles on it. We should have driven it another 5 years."

Wow - we get pretty decent mileage in the Pilot. do you have the 4WD? I'm very happy with the highway mileage, not so much the daily driving around (I was used to an Accord)....but I love everything else about it so it's all good.

No you don't NEED a backup camera. And there is no reason for you to be spending 40k on a truck. Buy yourself a cheap used car.

I haven't used mine yet (unless it kicked in by itself)...but there were no 2WD in the trim package I wanted so I bought the 4WD.

With a really big truck and three young children they are useful. There's a number of accidents each year where parents reverse and run over their kids because they can't see them through the mirrors. It happens often enough that I think they will be required by law for all big vehicles next year. I have one and I love it because on wide angle I can see bicyclists coming down the street or pedestrians in parking lots when I'm pulling out from between two cars. There was a rule out to require it on all vehicles. Transportation Board has delayed it while they sort out the logistics.

My mom uses a small garbage bin, and I have hit it twice in my little civic. I did not see it at all-- even after bumping it (it was still upright). The thought that I could not see a small child in the same way terrifies me.

My new car the back-up camera has a sensor and will beep if a car or a person is on the back of either side of the car. Very helpful in a parking lot, especially where I am next to a van or something. Also helpful because I can't see off one side of my driveway, but it will pick up if someone is on the sidewalk. For 12 years I have just been pulling out super slow and hoping anyone on the sidewalk will see me and stop. I almost hit a girl once who was on a scooter and barreled right through there. I missed her by less than a foot. Ack!
