There are a lot of good ideas. I sm guessing the bigger problem is most wouldn't take these steps because THEY would never forget their child. I can honestly say although I could understand how it could happen, I don't see how it could happen to me.

Maybe we just need to encourage people to have more kids (or give them extra kids if they physically can't have more than 1). A herd of children won't be forgotten! These deaths seem to be all single children in the car. Make it illegal to have 1 kid. You must have none or 2 or more (we will let you get some from foster care if yours is small). Between the fighting, screaming, and picking on each other, no one would be forgotten again...

Clearly, we need to remove all windows from cars. OK, maybe not windshields.
Or maybe we could have rules against driving on warm and/or sunny days?

I think if I could be 100% sure to remember to put my shoe next to the car seat (and I'm not saying I could), I could be 100% sure to remember not to leave the kid in the car. And then your kid picks up the shoe and starts chewing on it. Or throws it at your head. Or throws it out the window. Or screams bloody murder when you take the shoe away when you've arrived. I think the person who came up with this idea doesn't have kids.

I did find it very ANNOYING that I cannot put the backseat windows down the whole way and the stupid car has to lock from inside. I think that is ridiculous. Why can't I have a car where the window can go all the way down?

Yeah, until the kid opens up your purse and helps himself to the assorted "mothers little helper" bottles! LOL!

I just cannot fathom being so distracted that you'd forget the kid is in the car...
And blaming child safety laws and/or technology is simply silly.

No, we can't understand the distraction but it happens. And, there is nothing wrong with making some kind of alarm system. We have child locks, gates, and all manner of things that we use to try to prevent accidents so a simple to use alarm might save one life and may be a wise thing to have.

Crap, I didn't forget my kid in his car seat. I left him in the grocery cart and almost left the parking lot.

Crap, I didn't forget my kid in his car seat. I left him in the grocery cart and almost left the parking lot. That reminds when I had my son who was under a year old at the time at the grocery store with me... i have him in the seat in the cart.. we head out to the parking lot... I start to load groceries into my car.. I turn back to the cart to see it slowly rolling away from me in the parking lot! My son's eyes were so big as he is watching me get further and further away... yikes! I don't think I ever sprinted so fast as I did to catch the cart. From that moment on, it's been automatic for me to place one foot on the bottom of the cart as I unload... LOL I remember taking DD to the store when she was about three weeks old and having the dilemma of what to do once I had put her and the groceries in the car and then had to return the cart. It was three spaces over Pretty sure after that I would drive around the lot to purposefully park right next to the cart corral when I could. LOL! Now I could care less - once DD is strapped in it will be fine if I walk 20 ft away. I do always make sure to lock her in so it's not like the car is running and any kind of temptation for stealing.

OK, please, explain it to me because I have no idea what it means:
You don't always have your laptop, your purse, or your cellphone. But you do always have a shoe.
So when you put your kid on the back seat, put your left shoe back there, too.
Do it every time. Tell whoever takes your kid in a car to do it too. Help each other remember. Spread the word. Make it a habit and make sure no child is ever left to die in a hot car.
I am soooo confused!

I am soooo confused! Some women are worried about leaving their expensive shoes in a hot car, which will ruin them. So the idea is, leave your expensive shoe on the back seat, near your kid, so that when you take the kid out, you will see the shoe and remember not to leave it in the car.

It's not about the cost of the shoes. It's that when you get out of the car, you will be lopsided, a shoe on your right foot and no shoe on your left foot. You need 2 shoes. When you reach for the left shoe, there is your kid in the back seat. Works for men just as well as women.

I am still confused...and I have NO idea what you just said... What is wrong with me I just can not imagine what is this piece trying to say...she will only are about her child when compared to a shoe?

You can if you have an automatic. I suppose if you have a stick shift, you might need something on your left foot. Maybe a flip flop or funny slipper so someone at work will notice and say what the h%#* are you doing! your shoes don't match.

Yeah, I am not walking in a wet, mucky parking lot with only one shoe. And I can't reach the back seat from the driver seat. Good thing my 3-yr old never stops asking questions - I couldn't forget her if I tried. And she never sleeps in the car either. It's happened maybe twice since she was 6 months old, and of course neither of those times were on our 9+ hr road trips.

I hate seeing the "excuses" being made for someone leaving a child in a car. I'm sorry but I don't find any reason for leaving a child in a hot car acceptable. If you're that distracted with a child in the car I can only imagine how distracted you let yourself get at home and then it will only be a matter of time before the child gets seriouly hurt there.
And before anyone asks, yes I zone out when driving, yes I forget things but when I had my children with me way back when (and have DGD with me now) I never once forgot I had a child in my car.
So to those who allow themselves to get distracted, my response is get your head out of your ass and keep your focus on what's important. That means when your child is in the car, no phone calls, no mentally reviewing your to-do list, etc. And hey, here's a novel idea - talk to the child or sing to them or anything else that requires a response of some kind from them. If you're spending the drive interacting with them instead of chatting with everyone but them, you're less likely to forget they are there. And yea, I know the next response - what if they are asleep. Well, I guess no one but me cares if their child/grandchild has shifted in a way to get a bad crick in their neck, has their sippy upside down leaving them in a puddle or anything else that is going to make a mess or them uncomfortable.
Stepping down now.

If this has already been addressed and I missed it, I apologize, but why are they encouraging removing a shoe and driving without it? Around here it is illegal to drive without shoes. Maybe that's just a local thing? I was told it was a safety issue/hazard.

I use my right foot to drive and own an automatic. Missing a shoe on my left foot isn't going to impair my driving any.
The theory is you'll step out of the car and realize you're not wearing both shoes, then you need to go back and get the second shoe which is next to the baby prompting you to remember to take said kid out of the car.
I'm far more likely to remember the kid and forget I only have one shoe on until I step in something wet/sticky.

Stepping down now. How are you dealing with all that stuff when driving with a kid in a rear facing seat behind you? I ask because a woman just recently drove head on into a tractor near our place when trying to pick up a nuk.

Oh man that's terrible. I inform Gwen anything that ends up on the floor stays on the floor till mommy stops because I can't reach back to get things when I am driving. Pisses her off but it beats getting into a wreck.
And we've had our share of spilled stuff, that's why she no longer gets anything unless we're both in the car (then the passenger can handle drink issues). If there is only one of us present then she'll survive just fine without a beverage until we reach our destination or a pit stop.

The worst injured of the bunch was the guy on the tractor that of course was thrown quite a ways. The kid was perfectly fine, but Mom was pretty beat up too.

Yeah, we always call them nuks since they make 90% of the pacifiers out there.

Instead of always thinking about why something won't work, why not try to consider all the times it will work? No. Your child's safety seat is probably not going to save him/her if an alien drops a one million ton meteorite on top of your car. But for the other 9, 999,999,999,999 times, it will save your child. What's the harm in putting your shoe back there?
I drive barefoot probably about 50% of the time. For the other 50% of the time, I have on shoes. At least for that 50% of the time, I have an added safety measure at my disposal. A cheap one that doesn't take much time. Why not do whatever you can to lessen the chance of a disaster instead of sitting around thinking why those ways won't work 100% of the time?
It sounds like to me it's a good suggestion that might work some of the time. Maybe not if you drive a stick...or you can't get to the backseat to get your shoe without getting out of the car...or you drive with no shoes...or...whatever. But for some, it might make a difference. It's a suggestion - not a guarantee. In my mind, it doesn't take much to at least give it a try.
