Check your receipts BEFORE leaving the store. Bought 6 items at a local fruit/veg market on Thur. Two of them rang up incorrectly – NOT in my favor. I was overcharged $1 + tax. I did catch one as it was rung but NOT the other until I looked at the receipt this am. The bill total was in the range of what I thought I would spend. After all, when buying produce at 0.xx/lb you can never estimate exactly.
I am kicking myself because this is something I ALWAYS used to do. Dominicks & Jewel were notorious for making errors even 5-6 days into an ad. Dominicks is now closed. It has been months since I set foot in Jewel. Good thing I will be 5 blocks from that store today otherwise it would not be worth it to make a special trip. The gas at our highest in the nation price in metro Chicago would cost more.

Wow. You guys are hard core. I'd be compelled to buy a $2.50 cup of coffee to justify walking ten blocks on an errand. And all the coffee shop snackadoos look so good; I'd get one of those too. The total with tax would be $5.10. Since I don't like pocket change, I'd the $0.90 into the barista tip jar, making it an even $6.00. After recovering my ill-charged loot at the grocery store, I'd be $5.00 poorer and 30 minutes closer to death.

Some errors are rather large, so it can be worth checking one's receipt.

Around here it used to be really worth it at Dominicks & jewel. You got the total charged cost of the item back PLUS the item for free. Since Dominicks is gone I am not sure if Jewel still has this policy. However, Jewel was never much of an incorrect scan charge violater.

It can be hard to keep an eye on all the prices, especially if you are loading your stuff onto the belt or putting bags in the cart. I try to watch, especially for salt items. At our local store, a lot of things ring up at full price, then subtract the "loyalty card discount" so it is even harder to keep track.
Last year after a large Walmart trip (over $100), I didn't notice anything, but the total seemed high for what I bought. When I got home I looked at my receipt and notice that my 6 ears of corn were rung up as 63 ears - I guess the clerk pushed the 6 and 3 together. I thought I would never get that money back because how could I prove I didn't get 63 ears. It was ~$25. But I took my receipt back on my next trip and told the customer service person what happened, she chuckled and said she would refund my money. She was going to refund me 63 ears, but I corrected her it should only be 57 ears, since I did take home 6. Got my money back. It never hurts to ask!

I was overcharged $1 + tax. Ok, I know this is going to sound really cold, but you're seriously going to go make a fuss over a dollar? I could see asking for it to be corrected if it were, say, $3 or more. But $1? I'd call it a tip and just remind myself to watch closer next time.

I keep a mental note of how much I am accruing even with all of the discounts. If the total is off of that by more than a dollar, I check my receipt in the store. A few days ago, it was several dollars more. I had a special price on an item for a dollar each. I noticed that the system rang one up as a dollar, but the other two were at $2.79 each. I went back in line and explained to the cashier that either there was a limit of one which I overlooked, or that their system did not ring it up properly, but I didn't know which and wanted to return two. They refunded the entire purchase price on the two and gave them to me for free. Better than I even asked for. So yes, I check mine too.

Same here - I sure wouldn't get bent out of shape over a ONE dollar over-charge!
About the only thing I pay attention to at the store, is if something on the shelf is marked at a sale price or a 2 for 1 - I make sure those items get rung-in at the sale price posted.
I've sometimes bought white potatoes in bulk and had them rung-in as yellow potatoes (different price/kg) - but it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things - certainly not a big enough deal to bother worrying about.

$1 might be NOTHING to some/most of you here but for me it is the average cost or more than I spend on a balanced, home cooked meal for lunch or dinner. I am a senior on a VERY strict, limited budget. Take a look at my posts in What’s for dinner thread in smart spending.
I probably would have NOT gone back Fri if I wasn’t so close, 6 blocks out of my way. I would have waited until my next trip. However, by going Fri there was NO argument at customer service. I suspect I was NOT the only one w/mispricing issues from Wed and/or Thur.

Got to disagree. This is not a "tip". It goes straight to the company, not an employee.

I didn't mean a literal tip to the cashier. More in the sense that the company got a little extra, which they can probably use just as much as marvholly (since it's a small local place.)

I might overlook $1 overcharge but when a cashier charged me twice for a vacuum cleaner, you bet I spoke up.

Over 10 years ago, when I was just emerging from BK, I argued with the bank over 25 cents. I had written a check to my nephew for his birthday and there was no 25 cents in it. The bank gave it back to me. I did walk to the bank. I was living in a very high cost of living area then and I desperately needed every penny I could put my hands on.

I was at a PYO farm last week and pointed out to them that their scale was not zeroed out.
The person behind me went on about how I must be a jew and it's only 3 cents difference and he'll give it to me if I would just let it go bc he wants to go home and those damn jews, blah blah blah.
Sometimes it really is the dollar amount and sometimes it's the principal of a matter, but I don't think it's very nice to tell someone that it's "only" a penny or only a dollar.
I could be wrong, I've been wrong before

I was charged for 1.09 lb of a veg last week BUT when I checked at home on my pretty blasted accurate scale it was only 12.5 oz. I will not fight w/the store, just sic the town on them.

I grabbed snacks for DD and I at Walmart while we were in the checkout line. Two items that were each marked $1. One rang up $.99, the other $1.09. I didn't catch until after it was over and it was not worth fussing over $.08 by any means, but I do watch as things are rung up most of the time and will speak up even if it's just a few cents off. If anything they need to know to change their signs/tags.

This is highly offensive. I also had an issue with a substitute clerk at the post office. I had weighed my package at home so I had a good idea of what it should have cost to mail it 20 miles away. This was the second run in I had with her. She told me it costs more to send a package one direction than it did to get to me. I was sending it back to the same address. I know she over charged me 20 cents on that one. This second issue I had with her, I took in the package. She weighed it 3 times and came up with a different amount of postage each time. I finally told her to zero out the scale and start over. Then the cost was what I had come up with. I came home and did an online complaint with the USPS. Sadly, it's here in my small town, but I have not been back to the post office because she is still there. She drove the Postmaster to take early retirement because they wouldn't let her fire the clerk.

In the past, I've posted about always checking your receipts. Admittedly, I've gotten lazy over the past several months. I think I've become comfortable as things are improving financially for DH and I.
That being said.... I just reviewed last night's grocery receipt before entering it into my checkbook register and noticed I was charged for TWO bags of popcorn for this weekend's camping trip. I was wondering why the total was so high (it was a small order-under $20). I wish I had noticed sooner, as I was at the store again this morning to pick up two more items. Dang it.

I always call stores on it. It seems meijers has a tendency to mark things on sale when you pick them up but they don't ring up that way. Multiply that by how many customers buy those items and you make a huge profit on things that are supposed to be on sale. Yes, it's only a dime but times how many consumers it adds up to a lot and fast.

Life is so much simpler when you don't care how much things cost. You don't have to be rich not to care how much things cost. You just have to realize that one random event like a furnace or a car transmission failing can instantly invalidate three years' worth of nickle n' dime savings. If you enjoy saving--if it's a game and a challenge to you--by all means pinch your pennies. For me, the medical costs associated with the added stress of penny pinching would outweigh the savings by a factor of 10 to 1. Sometimes it's enough that I ignore 30 $1.00 issues and simply take the hit on that one $30.00 issue. For example, I'm still using my old Samsung Galaxy Q that I got free with a renewal of my phone contract. There are significantly better models out there for $500.00-$700.00, and sure they'd be nice to have. But I'd much rather say "screw it", be content with my old phone, and be able to ignore 500-700 $1 issues in exchange.

Virgil, it's like you don't even know us! zib, same here. One of the items this morning was a can of cherry pie filling (we're making a it cake while camping this weekend) and the Comstock cans were in the kroger store brand row, and rang up $2 higher. You bet I told the cashier to cancel my two item order while I walked back to grab the appropriate can (there was just one person behind me in line). When I returned to the cashier and told her about the mis-shelving, she didn't seem phased. Um, no, tell your co-workers to correct it! Virgil, while I understand your point, some people get into trouble when they don't worry about what things cost. I was one of them.

I suppose it's not so much "not worrying" about what things cost, it's about worrying proportional to the cost. Consider the amount of worrying you went through during the sale (or purchase) of your last house. Depending on the housing market, interested buyers, and various other factors, the price could easily swing for or against you by $20K. Ergo, that amount of worry is appropriate for $20K transactions. The amount of worrying you do for a $1 transaction should be roughly 1 20,000th that amount of worry.

And I suppose in some cases it's dependent on the person's annual income. 1 20,000th amount for a person living on $10K a year would translate to $2, yes? $2 translates into two meals for some of our beloved SSers.
