Have been online here. What amazes me is we had 2,364 "guests".
What would it take to get these guests to become members here? Or are they all banned members who just lurk here?

Most read from work, they are too shy to sign up and be on the 'show'.

You must be bored to be keeping up on the board stats.
There have always been lots of lurkers. Some are members of other ProBoards sites, and do a general search of other ProBoards forums to see if there's something that might be of interest to them.
It's a big (cyber) world out there. Millions are online at any given time.
We're just a dot on the radar.
A couple of thousand is a drop in the bucket.

Correct, But 230 members and ten times as many visitors in 24 hours. I find that statistic interesting, and something we can work with to build our membership base. I am not bored. From day one Moonbeam and Virgil commented how hard it is to build membership due to lack of a national/international audience that MSN had.
We have lost some longtime members who did a lot of posting here, and as we move on in life, we lose other members thru boredom or health issues. We do need to get some of these lurkers to join up!

Since you're stating statistics, we're also heading into summer/camping/vacation season.
Seems we get more new members in the fall/winter, from past experience. Even the board in general has slowed down in the last week or two. People are out doing things now that the weather is more accepting.
In fall/winter, people are trapped indoors more and spending much more time online. Also, school season is winding down so people with kids are preoccupied with family than in the cooler seasons.
In the almost 4 yrs I've been here, this is a natural trend.

Most of those "guests" are bots, Value Buy. Not all of them, mind you, but most of them. They're crawlers for the various search engines and sites like Amazon. There aren't even people associated with them.

What matters to proboards and how they come about what makes a successful board is amount of page views used. This Board goes through a ton of page views every month, meaning that many more ads are shown.
This board makes a lot of money for proboards.
If I'm wrong correct me please.

Except for unusual situations like the V5 change over from V4 hasn't it always been that way? And the lurkers are bots?! We are so interesting that even bots read us? Cool. I remember Moon cleaning out posters who don't post and we got really down in our membership count. 1,300 or 1,400? I just checked and we have 1,559 at this time so it has to be more than just bots reading. I know how to find out! <<flashes boobs>>

I'm not logged into the forum as much as I used to be. The majority of my time is spent as a guest, especially when I work. So some of the guests are probably members who aren't currently logged in and are reading instead of posting.

They eliminated spaces and truncated the name of the "crapsters" board. I read it as "crap then amee". Poor guys can't catch a break. You also have to consider "hidden" members, VB. Include those and our board has on any given weekday: 290 active members + 16 staff We've been holding at this mark for about a year now. I would be very surprised if more than a few unique IPs belonged to bots. Each bot might index the board several times a day, but the pool of unique IPs would remain quite small. No more than a dozen. Our board simply isn't mainstream enough to warrant more content indexing. Unless you know something we don't? The built-in forum analytics don't include that kind of information. Did somebody ask one of the Proboards techs over on support about it? They would have better tools to classify guest IPs.

On "my" board, one that I run, I've seen sometimes where half or more of the "guests" are bots... some Google, some Bing, some Amazon. But other days there's no bots that show up... None. So it could be a LOT of bots... or it could be a LOT of people... or it could be anywhere in between. Anything is possible.

looking at the 114 guests online, the vast majority are from legit ISPs, so probably members who are browsing but not logged in. Others are probably legit guests checking us out. but there are also
12 Microsoft bots 9 google bots 2 yahoo bots 1 from hong kong - not sure if legit or what 1 from poland -not sure if legit or what 12 from a thailand spam source

Run some of the IPs (first two sections are enough). It doesn't take long to figure it out.

Yes, I remember it was member's who hadn't posted in 6+ months or more who were purged (might have been a longer time-span but that's close, as I remember).
The membership #'s dropped a fair bit after that cleaning.
Considering other boards though, we have a fairly active & high number of members online/posting at any given time.
I was checking out the stats on another board earlier today and it was "0 Staff, O Members, 12 Guests" - no recent posts.

I just checked and we have 1,559 at this time so it has to be more than just bots reading I just got rid of about 100 who had no posts and hadn't signed in at all this year. I could easily get rid of that many more who have only one or two posts, I bet.

I'm guessing "guest" is board members who have signed out. I'm betting that when I open the page each time it logs a "guest" visit until I log in, then it logs me as a member visit. Then it probably counts member visits by distinct username, but guest visit without distinguishing the same guest (me) opening the page new 20 times per day prior to any logging in.
