Numerous things.
I've come to the conclusion not to rent from private citizens, only from companies, it just gets too personal otherwise.
Back when I was starting out in 2007, I first rented the loft in some ladies house. Things went okay, for the most part, but she decided to not renew my month to month when I had one month left before leaving for training and I had to scramble to find a place to live for a month. Not a good time.
The next place was worse. It had a toilet that clogged if you put anything other than liquids *ahem* down it. I ended up having to use the toilet down the street at the dunkin' doughnuts. Also, the landlord ended up breaking a cable off of my tv and getting the end bits stuck in the TV because he asked me to move it and couldn't wait until I got home from work. When I confronted him about it, he threatend to kick me out and call the cops. This was also the place that sent me a large bill for cleaning the place up (it wasn't that dirty), which I didn't pay.
When I moved back to Maine, the first place I got was in some guy's basement, and it was infested with mold, and didn't have carpet, the carpet was to be installed a few weeks later. I ended up moving out after a couple of weeks, for fear of my health. I mean, it was bad, the mold smell was overpowering and it got into my clothes and I couldn't get the smell out for weeks.
The next time I rented, it was from an apartment complex. Overall, it's gone okay. Rent has gone up fairly significantly over the past couple of years, more than 15%, which I think is unreasonable. Other than that, the main problem I have is some of the cheap construction breaks frequently. They always fix it, but I had to ask them to replace the knobs on my laundry room door three times before they fixed it for good.
