Girls feared arrest for cookie peddling after police officer asked to see their permit. VILLA RICA, Ga. — A Girl Scout leader says young members of her troop thought they were headed to jail when a Georgia police officer told them to quit selling cookies. The girls had set up a stand at a strip mall in Villa Rica about 30 miles west of Atlanta on Wednesday when the officer asked them if they had a peddler's permit. They didn't. Troop Leader Kathy Crook told WXIA-TV in Atlanta that she was stunned. She says the scouts were told to pack it up. And she says the younger members thought they would be taken to jail. Story: Thin Mint thrashing lands Florida woman behind bars The city's police chief and mayor spoke with the officer. They say he did nothing wrong and that it was a misunderstanding. The troop now has a permit to sell. And to smooth things over, the city is offering the scouts a pizza party. The troop now has a permit to sell. If that officer is that lacking of common sense and empathy then he needs to find another line of work.

If it was really an issue, why not cut them a break and tell the adults that next time they plan on setting up shop, first obtain a peddler's permit. Poor judgment, IMHO.

Aww. It probably scared those poor kids half to death! I have to wonder if this was a young officer that was a bit too gung-ho. While you're supposed to enforce the law, you should be able to cut some kids a bit of slack if all they're doing is selling cookies for the Girl Scouts!

You see GS selling cookies everywhere. I'm a sucker and have purchased 10 boxes of the darn things. The leader was probably unaware she needed a permit. Nice thing would have been to inform her of the need and how to obtain one for future selling. No need to scare a bunch of little girls.

Not having ever having had a lemonade stand on the sidewalk, do the Girl Scout troops who sell the cookies out in the front of grocery stores have to have a peddler's permit?

In this neck of the woods, they are usually inside the entry way of stores. Given they are on private property, that is a retail operation...........maybe they only need the store's permission.

I thought this thread was going to be about Michelle's anti-obesity campaign.

I see them in front of the Wal-Mart entrance every year. Since I have reduced my sugar intake I just give them money and tell them to give the cookies to the womens homeless shelter. The fat looks better on them than me.

I think the troop leader was foolish for not handing over a box of thin mints to make the problem go waay.

This is why I am NOT a "law and order" conservative. This is why I definitely lean libertarian- and even support the ACLU, and have agreed with one of the first major decisions of Justice Sotomayor.
Really? This is a justifyable use of police resources? This is a great example of a point I made in another thread: we have too many police, and as a result they have too much time on their hands, and this is what happens when people with guns don't have enough real work to do.

On the serious side of this. I wonder if the local GS coucil buys a permit that covers all the troops. I know the girls around here are not allowed to sell door to door any more. Last time I saw one was several years ago and her mom was with her. She went to certain homes and that was it. I didn't know the family but I guess we look harmless. The officer must have been very young or was in a bad mood. Maybe the prior evening didn't go as well as he wished.

I don't know that we need less police, but more officers that possess a modicum of common sense.

MARJAR: That is as correct a statement as I have ever heard. I have always given officers the advantage of the doubt but I have on occasion seen things that make me ask, what are they thinking about. Their actions or reactions just made the matter worse. The younger officers need to spend more time riding with older officers and learn how a calm voice and firm hand can calm a tense situation. However having said that I could never be a police officer, the first time I arrested a vicious child abuser I would be the one ending up in jail and the abuser in the morgue. I do know my limitations.

The cops involved in scaring these Girl Scouts ought to take up a collection in their Police Station and buy several boxes of the kids Girl Scout cookies which might help their oublic image which is a big zero now

Ok people. This is how it works. The cop was totally right to do what he did. Girl Scouts are required to have permits to sell in certain locations. The local Girl Scout Council has to set up locations in advance in order to be compliant with safety regulations within the Girl Scout organization and according to local ordinances. They then hand each troop a permit. If the troop does not have a permit, chances are they are not within Girl Scout regulations or parameters. Either that or their local council effed up. The Girl Scouts are freaking strict as all get out about their cookie sales too. This may have been a troop trying to get a leg up on the competition, but they got smacked down by law enforcement. Poor babies

If that officer is that lacking of common sense and empathy then he needs to find another line of work. With all the laws on the books..he made a mistake, thought he was doing his job and for that mistake, your thinking , against the wall, "would you like a last cigarett , blindfold or rather go out with your eyes open?". A little lighting up wouldn't be a bad thing here.

Because cops know a public relations nightmare when they see one. They caved to public opposition even if they were totally right to do what they did. I was told by my council - IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A PERMIT YOU CANNOT SELL! WE CAN BE FINED! The fact that permits are required is pretty much public knowledge. So the troop leader is at fault and the parents of the troop members should bitch her out.

Next time, these girl scouts should put on head scarves and say they are a muslim girl scout troop. Then they could set fire to the store where they are selling and no cop would bother them...
