I watched him on the Olympics last night. What an amazing guy! He did the USA Olympic Team proud.

(I'm afraid only Harry Potter fans will get this one. Unfortunately, this woman reminds me SO MUCH of a former boss of mine.) Oof. You worked with Dolores Umbridge? You poor poor thing!

I didn't use that one with students. I based the advantage of learning basic math facts on laziness. Just memorize them and you won't have to use a calculator all the time.

Cheated my way thru school and only took enough in high school to graduate. Loved every other subject in school though. So what do I wind up making a living as~~a bookkeeper. Go figure. Took job with CPA as secretary in the 70’s and her bookkeeper’s husband got transferred so she decided to train me to do books. I almost quit rather than deal with numbers. I couldn’t have asked for better teacher and the light bulb came on I still hate math problems. Bet you are/were a good teacher.

I see myself as at best an average teacher but a good educator. Lesson planning, grade book maintenance, attendance working with students I am very happily now semi-retired working as an aide one-on-one with high needs kids

Pfft.

It wasn't uncommon for elementary school me to skip the row after row after row of drill and kill problems and just do the couple story problems at the bottom of the page. Drove my teachers crazy.

I bet he was happy! I drove a Toyota for probably 30 years. I always wanted a personalized plate that said, "MY TOY".

I just saw a Smart car in the wild when my friend S was driving me somewhere. It's weird, they look even smaller than they were when they first came out.

Impressive. I wasn't a fan of story problems but did OK on them. I did like math. I was generally good at math although I hated doing proofs. I just wanted to say Q.E.D and move on.

I invented shortcuts to my dad's dismay in Jr High and HS. I remember him saying one time, you can't do that. What if X and Y were true, then that wouldn't work. True dad, but it's not a problem for the rest of the chapter, I looked. Here, check it yourself <Hands dad math book at kitchen table in the past.>

The problem is, I could do it in my head and solve problems in a different way. The teacher required us to do it "their" way, and would dock us even if we got the right answer. No wonder I hated algebra.

I was blessed with a couple teachers that either rolled with it or decided to embrace it. One had one of the students teach us for a week or so instead of finding a sub. I think that guy read ahead because he also played football. I think this was back when the class had various catchphrases, which the teacher went along with. How easy is it? Its a piece of cake. What kind of cake ? marble! yellow cake and chocolate cake living harmoniously together. What could be better?

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is EXACTLY why I hated algebra. I'd never have problems like this outside of school, so why worry about them?
