I want to dislike the Duggars, and I'm sure the show is heavily edited (if not scripted), but I'm in the same boat. Despite our pretty much diametrically-opposed religious beliefs, and my own childhood hangups about being responsible for semi-parenting younger siblings, they seem like the type of people I would like to be friends with. (It was/is on every morning around 7 so I watched it a lot while on maternity leave). I will make that doctor's appointment with you

I have to admit I watched about 2 hours. I never watched it before. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I also have to admit that I know of some families that have very similar values but not as many kids (only 10 ). Some of the things like "old fashioned courtship" seem very quaint, but outdated.

It just seems that the kids have plans for life and also have a fairly good disposition. I don't know.... In one of the episodes Michelle was talking about spending one-on-one time with some kids, I wonder if people's comments got to them or something. Now I need to google why Josh moved to DC... Obviously, I am very busy today

Obviously, I am very busy today He took a job with the Family Research Council, an extremely conservative, Christian-based organization. While I don't agree with what the FRC stands for, or a lot of what the Duggars stand for, I still admire the fact that all their kids, or at least the older ones (so far) have stayed away from crime, drugs and trouble in general. They appear to be polite, physically active and well-behaved, and all appear to be in good health.

I am curious, though - the general consensus seems to be that somewhere between 4-7% of the US population identifies as homosexual. Since the Duggars have 19 kids, that puts them at .76 - 1.33 gay children. I wonder whether the odds have held true for them, and if so, whether the gay child will come out, and if so, how the family will react... (I wonder this about all large, conservative families. I married into one and they were very accepting of SIL when she came out, but I'm not sure that's the norm.) /hijack

There's a chance if there was a gay child he'd come out if he went to college. But none of the Duggar kids go to college. I think at most they may have taken some online classes? I know a few of the girls are becoming doulas - and I think midwives, but that's about as far as they get in the nursing industry without going to college. Which none have mentioned even though several are in the 20s now. It seems more that it's an "appropriate" thing for them to do until they get married. I'm still waiting for the rebel to come out. There has to be one of them!!

That's who my money is on But overall I tend to like the show. It's one I can watch with DD in the room because they are never rude or disrespectful. I have a serious issue with their ATI program for school, but that's more because of what I know from behind-the-scenes stuff growing up in that culture. It is not apparent on the show if you've never been around it. The kids are growing up to be responsible, productive members of society. Isn't that what people always are worried about? Who cares what their personal religious beliefs are. I worry WAY more about the brats on Toddlers & Tiaras than I do about the Duggars.

I don't like them. I think they are good people, no doubt, but they are just "strange" to me. I like them better than the Octomom, but I don't like their beliefs or keeping their children down on the farm, so to speak.

I find these sort of programmes strangely compelling. Its just like nothing I know. I was really bored and watched some clips of Keeping Up With the Kardashians on YouTube this weekend. I've never seen anything related to them before and was curious since you can't escape hearing about them in some manner. They didn't all come across as reprehensible as I thought they would (the exception being the mom). They weren't enough of a train wreck to make compelling viewing; they actually seemed like a somewhat normal family. My own family has its share of drama queens without the nice real estate, clothes and cars to look at. Maybe I'll give the Duggars a shot the next time I'm bored.

The kids are growing up to be responsible, productive members of society. Isn't that what people always are worried about? Who cares what their personal religious beliefs are. I worry WAY more about the brats on Toddlers & Tiaras than I do about the Duggars. I agree- I don't believe in uncontrolled reproduction; most of us have practical and financial limits to how many children we can properly take care of. In the Duggars' case, the older ones are pitching in as a matter of necessity, and I think that's wrong. I'm the oldest of 5 but Mom was in charge. I remember taking care of my youngest brother (born when I was 7) but it was more that I thought it was fun. I don't think I ever had to change his diaper or give him a bath. That was Mom's job and she took responsibility for it. It's a bit scary that I agree with the Duggars' values in other ways even though I'm a child of the 70s and was definitely a "try before you buy" when it comes to marriage. Home schooling? Heck, yes, the public schools are bound by an insane amount of rules and the inmates are running the asylum. I'm sure the Duggars are making a mint from their reality show, but to my knowledge they aren't relying on needs-based social programs to feed and house their kids. My own DS belongs to a church that discourages one-on-one dating and I really think he and DDIL waited till the wedding night. Mind-boggling to me but I love my DIL and the two of them are still cuddling up to each other even though they have a beautiful baby girl in the mix. This child and (God willing) future children will grow up in a stable, two-parent household. I had a few years raising DS as a single mother after my divorce and even under pretty good circumstances (no money worries and I was a good mother) it wasn't ideal. I was, however, happy to find that DDIL doesn't want more than 3 or 4 children, and in their church it's considered a mater of personal choice.

I can't believe next week is a season finale. What am I going to do Netflix from the beginning! It's fun to go back and watch their initial TLC specials before they got their show. The kidlets are too cute! Maybe it's because I've grown up in a conservative culture, I am used to big families. Older kids help out but are not "raising" the little ones. I never saw it that way and I was the oldest. I babysat alone from the time I was 12, we were all responsible for doing chores which sometimes included helping the little kids, but mom & dad were very much involved in everyone's lives. I know several families with 10+ kids and they all seem to be doing fine. Some are home schooled, some go to public school, and some go to private school. Shoot, DH and I want 5-6 kids because we loved growing up in big families, and I would like to foster after that.

I think Jim Bob is creepy. I also don't like to listen to Michelle talk. It isn't that I think they are bad people - just not the kind of people I like to be around. Their kids all seem fine. I also get pissed off when I hear their stupid all "J" name thing. I think it is kind of weird in smaller families - but they are just putting random letters together now. They have used all of the names - many of them twice. Blech.

I have watched about 5-10 minutes of one of the shows and couldn't stand to watch anymore. The girls were going to bed in their 1800's style bonnets or something, and Michelle is at the door saying, "good night, girls". Nothing terrible about it on the surface, but it just seemed so incredibly fake.

Her voice is all sing-songy. I can't help but think that it's fake. Once the cameras go off it changes. lol Isn't Jinger the one that just got engaged though? I honestly can't tell them apart. I'm glad the girls stopped doing their hair like their mom though!

Don't rain on my parade people! I am watching the finale next week!
But yes, Michelle's voice is annoying as hell, but I am finding out more and more (remember, I watched the marathon) that kids are kind of sounding "regular"
I actually think it's interesting that Josh moved that far away from everyone

I think its a VERY scripted show.
Not saying that the kids are bad, but the way they talk and act, seems to be all for the camera.
