Gunman kills six in drive-by shooting in California college

A lone gunman sprayed bullets from a car in a drive-by shooting in a southern California college town, killing at least six people before his car crashed and he was found dead inside, authorities said on Saturday.

Seven more people were wounded in what the Santa Barbara County Sheriff described as a premeditated atrocity late on Friday in the town of Isla Vista near the campus of the University of California at Santa Barbara.

The first thing that popped into my head after hearing this, was "Overindulged college student, too much time on his hands, possibly on party drugs, upset with the breakup of his girlfriend and with her friends for talking her into it"    Just a guess.

If he hadn't had a gun, it's likely he would have taken the BMW he was driving and slammed it into the group.

This type of thing, IMHO, won't stop until we start doing a better job of raising our children.

Apparently, the shooter put a video out, but it's now been pulled. Here is what was stated below the video.

Rodger declares that the video will be his last, and laments a life of loneliness.

“Girls gave their affection and sex and love to other men but never to me,” he says.

“All those girls that I’ve desired so much, they would’ve all rejected me and looked down upon me as an inferior man if I ever made a sexual advance towards them while they throw themselves at these obnoxious brutes,” Rodger says to the camera.

Rodger then promises violence.

“I’ll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you,” he says. “You will finally see that I am in truth the superior one the true alpha male.”

“After I’ve annihilated every single girl in the sorority house, I’ll take to the streets of Isla Vista and slay every single person I see there.”

“If I can’t have you, girls, I will destroy you.”

Speculation on the Internet suggests Rodger may be the son of Hunger Games assistant director Peter Rodger and stepson of Soumaya Akaaboune (from the cast of TV show ‘Les Vraies

He made a statement that was interesting. He said that college was suppose to be about sex, fun and pleasure. Huh

BBC says: The man alleged to have shot dead six students in California had mental health difficulties and was being treated by "multiple professionals", his family's lawyer has claimed.

Alan Shifman said his client - Hollywood filmmaker, Peter Rodgers - believed his son Elliot carried out the attack near the UC Santa Barbara campus.

Mr Shifman said the family had contacted police about "recent posts on Youtube" by Elliot "regarding suicide and the killing of people".

Police confirmed they were investigating a video in which a man complains of rejection by women, threatening revenge.

I don't think it's possible to completely stop this sort of thing.  We could probably make some headway if we started paying close medical/psychological attention to young people when they enter puberty, but that would be very costly and a lot of parents likely wouldn't stand for it.  They'd consider it intrusive.  People lose it.  People have always lost it.

Kind of indicates he was of the tracks for awhile and his parent's knew it.  That said, where did he get the gun from?

How does society deal with this kind of stuff?  I'd certainly take a strong look at kids who abuse animals and younger/smaller siblings for openers.

Of course mommy and daddy would just say kids will be kids, stick their collective heads in the sand and blow off the whole issues until the defecation hits the rotary oscillator.

Sad situation to say the least.

All guns bought legally by him- along with a shitpile of magazines (41).

All 10 rounders I might add- since CA doesn't sell the higher capacity mags. 

Probably a good thing he couldn't get his hands on an AR-15 with a 200-300 round drum- sure he would have used one if he could.  No telling how high the death toll would have been.

After reading the link in Reply #12, it really seems like this mass murder has a bit of something for every conceivable talking point.

He was being treated by multiple professionals. His family was worried he might do something, but the police couldn't or wouldn't take action against him. He stabbed three people to death, shot three people to death, ran over a cyclist with his car. He's the son of the assistant director of the Hunger Games. He had hundreds of rounds of ammunition and apparently used most of them.

What could be done to stop it?

Preemptively shoot any kid we suspect might go on a killing spree, maybe?   Short of that, I got nothin'.

He hit a cyclist, crashed his car, and shot himself. Or so says the article.

With a weapon? The alleged assailant also had firearms.. What part of that is so hard to undertsand?

"Mental Illness" is becoming an epidemic - and most of what "society" blames on mass killings. Then the perp gets "special treatment' for their condition - but he victim(s) are still dead, and the families left grieving.

What is so hard to understand is how you fatally stab 3 men without some of them overpowering you while you are stabbing another. It's not to often a single person is able to overpower 3 others unless they were asleep.

He probably stabbed them in different places in the residence and/or at different times.

I agree that bringing down three men at the same time is a stretch, but one or two at the same time could happen, especially if he caught them off-guard.
