I make $39.31 an hour at full time (40 hours a week).
I would say at least a third of that floats away for taxes, insurance, and retirement savings.
So I probably have a net $24-$26 an hour, so it would take me about 2 hours to get $50 in my paycheck.
I never really focus on hourly pay because I always get paid for 40 hours a week.

"How many hours did you have to work to pay for it??" Actually I use this as the counter argument for small things sometimes. DH will say something like "Your morning coffee is costing us $700 a year" My reply is it takes me the first 10 mins of my day to pay for it, it's worth it. It is supposed to work both ways. YMOYL basically says you don't have to budget, if you just track your spending and translate what you spend into life hours, you naturally gravitate to spending on whats important and not wasting it on what isn't...

I would have a problem with the school being extra picky about damage just to try and collect more payments for an item that it is probably going to sell, donate, or trade. "Normal wear and tear" has to apply. Unless you keep the iPad in a really serious case (and those cases alone often cost $50+) it is GOING to get a scratch or two.
Now, obviously if there is a huge gash from the top to the bottom that impedes use of the screen, that is one thing. But if they are citing a hairline scratch on the back, they shouldn't charge the user for that.

You gave the impression the school is charging for normal wear and tear type stuff, and that such level of scruteny is not justified. In such a case I would probably argue it or pay it on the kids behalf. If I felt like they really did damage the IPAD, then yes, I would agree that they should pay for it.

ok, I have to admit that I have never once thought about how many hours of work it takes to pay for something. I buy what I want and if there's no money then I don't buy something. If there's something I need that's outside ordinary purchases, then I don't buy any fun stuff until I have the money for the need or it's paid off (most likely 0% financing).

I shouldn't have done this. I work 515 hours just to pay my Federal Income Taxes. My dad comments on that every year around the end of March, beginning of April. He says that he just worked from Jan 1st to whatever date in order to pay the government, now the wages for the rest of the year can pay his bills. Interesting to think about it like that.

When I really think about it, when it REALLY makes me ill, is when I'm throwing things away or hauling them to the Salvation Army or selling them on Craigslist for pennies on the dollar.
I've been doing a major reorganizing of my house lately and some stuff. Like boxes and boxes of books in the basement get me thinking. Sure, you don't notice $10-$15 here and there, but added up there are thousands of dollars of books down there. I've read them, I'm done with them. There are very few I will ever read again. It would sure love to have that money back! Same deal with kids stuff. So much baby and kid stuff I never used or never used enough to get my money's worth out of.
I'm slowly becoming a minimalist.

I really was just reflecting what the kids were saying.
At least one student came back with hers and said her mother was requesting a meeting with an administrator. Her mom was making her pay; in fact, she was the one complaining that it was a whole shift. But I'm not sure arguing will do any good.

The school handed out the iPads. I don't think they were optional. Yes it is optional to accept them.

Yes it is optional to accept them. I doubt it. Yes, it is optional. Some parents refuse them because they know their child is not responsible enough to be given a $500 piece of electronics. As you can see, the parents have to pay for it if anything happens to it. Parents also refuse them because they feel they are a distraction and a myriad of other reasons. Ipads also get taken away upon parental request.
Teachers have to have non-electronic versions of any assignment.

That is good then.
I wondered if they were moving to text books on ipad. I know I paid 100$ for the Biology book we use, but when we were going to fly to Florida I was looking at alternatives to lugging that heavy book and realized the ibook... same book, with interactive features, was 14.99.

Don't "they" put out the date each year for when that actually happens for the average worker? (I don't know who they is.) "They" are the Tax Foundation and they have been reporting on US tax policy for over 80 years. I've only been reading them for about 25 of those years . I have found their reporting to be refreshingly non-partisan and unbiased. I'm constantly amazed at how many people rant about the US tax system but don't even have a solid understanding of how it works. If we as a voting populace truly understood how much of our resources were wasted I think there would be greater change. taxfoundation.org/article/tax-freedom-day-2014-april-21-three-days-later-last-year

The school I teach at has iPads as well. They are not optional. The students will be charged for damages. The cases that they issue to the students are super heavy duty. I have seen students toss their iPads to the floor and there was no damage.
I do know a student who took the case off and then hit the screen against a desk. That iPad was damaged (screen shattered) and had to be paid for. Another student said his iPad was stolen. The family had to file a police report or the insurance policy wouldn't cover it.

I tend to do the "how many hours calculation to pay for X" related to eating out. I love food and the experience of dining out but it pains me at the end of a meal that I had to work 4 hours to pay for that 1 hour of enjoyment. Just seems crazy out of proportion.
