I used to go to the bread outlet/s, too, but they have all closed down. Now I just wait for the bread to go on sale (@$1.99 loaf for whole wheat/grain) and then stock up. Just zap a couple slices for toast or a sandwich and we're good to go.
Casseroles, soup, chili, tacos and breakfast for dinner were always my inexpensive go-to meals. Kids loved pancakes for dinner! And there are so many ways to make a frittata. We don't eat too much red meat around here so those prices haven't affected us too much. When we get a hankerin' for a hamburger, we'll splurge one of two ways: buy some sirloin and have them grind it up for us or go to our fave restaurant for their to-die-for $6 burger.
Like Donna, I garden a bit so will have tomatoes, zucchini and strawberries this summer. I've already harvested a ton of strawberries and have to pick some more today. Our apple tree should produce this year and the orange tree is always abundant. The .99 store usually has greens for $1 and bananas for .49 lb so worth a stop when I'm in that area.
There are ways to save but it does take time. Something I have since I'm now retired.

Donna I have to say, everytime I grocery shop I wonder how people with kids can afford to eat let alone feeding friends and nearly live in bottomless pit boyfriends. SOOO glad mine are grown & gone. IF I treat myself to a salty snack its either fron the $1 store or Aldi ($1.19). I LOVE my bread/bakery outlet stores – too bad both Sara Lee & Pepperidge Farm have closed down. Have no clue where the over runs & end of date code stuff is these days for those brands. We have an independent discount grocery store here that sells Pepperidge Farm products. They are .79 each! I try to stop every couple of weeks, even just for bread.

I would cut back in other areas if I had to in order to purchase the food we need/want.

We've pretty much stopped shopping at HyVee all together. I still get a lot of convenience foods, but we get them at Aldi. I only buy their produce on sale so that we spend less and we have a nice variety. Only exception would be bananas for DD - lord help us if we don't have bananas! We can get by for about $250/month for the three of us that way. I've not really felt the need to cut back any more.
We did cut out a lot of meat dishes just to be healthier so I buy ground beef maybe once a month. Can't cook steaks so we don't buy them. We eat a lot of fish (tilapia, swai, flounder, salmon), pasta with chicken, salads with chicken, and sandwiches. Tilapia is our main meat and fairly cheap at Aldi - 8 fillets (2lbs) for about $7, or 4 breaded/seasoned fillets for $5. Since we only use 2 fillets for each meal it stretches out pretty far. DH won't do rice or baked potatoes so we do a lot of veggies as a side. A bag of broccoli is a normal one for us - $1 or $.70 on sale. The three of us can eat dinner for less than $5 by loading up on the veggies.

I saved 87% off my grocery order last night. It would have been 100%, but I just had to buy potato chips. For stockpiling purposes, I used two coupons from the Kroger snail mailed packet for Kraft mayo and Jimmy Dean sausage, and an e-coupon for a free Yoplait Greek yogurt. The Kettle Chips were on sale and I had an ecoupon. Even the cashier was impressed.

We have a new puppy and the only thing her original owner fed her was fresh meats. Now she has a taste for it and nothing else. She refuses to eat any dog food, of any kind. We buy organically raised meats for ourselves, so I guess we will be sharing with the dog. With the price of meats on the rise, this is going to get expensive, for sure.

You can use almost any cut - Grinding will tenderize it - it all depends on how lean you want it. A cut of beef with less fat would be best, but you can do a ground chuck, round, rump, etc. My personal preference is a sirloin cut of beef for roasting or grinding into hamburger meat.
But even for the cheaper cuts, you can trim off any excess fat before grinding.
You can also do fresh-ground pork from a pork loin, or ground chicken or turkey breasts.. The problem with grinding your own meats, is the clean up mess from all the darn fat and grease in the meat. Hard to get the grinder clean. Have to have a lot of room in the freezer and grind a lot of product at once, and never mix pork and beef without cleaning the grinder thoroughly first. (never understood that because we always mix pork and beef for meatloaf)

Our local store is beyond expensive. It was bought out from a family that had a couple and retired, I suppose paying for it and making a profit too is what they are doing. This outfit owns several and is trying to stock this one with a variety of goods like their more urban ones. I don't know if their prices are this high in all their others or not, I would expect it is. We like a lot of different foods but I think these folks not only don't but can't afford it so the produce and all is suffering.
They had a really good package of tofu with a seasoning pouch, would have it with oriental veggies and now they don't seem to carry it. I might be the only one buying it. Looks like they get about 8 half gallon containers of organic milk at a time. I and some others keep them cleaned out but I suspect they hesitate to carry more as its expensive and since I buy 2 half gallons at a time they likely see the customer base in their stats. I figure they will stop carrying more and more items as time goes on. I would if it wasn't selling.
But then I read that in that town the poverty rate in 2009 was 37.6%, pretty high to me. I'm sure we have people born into poverty in this small town that can't get out and continue in the cycle, so I see it continuing to rise. Looks like its the very young and elderly.
Indiana just announced the unemployment rate has dropped to the lowest level seen since 2008. Life is good! Obama has turned the country around!

Yep, around and around and down it goes, and where it stops nobody knows. Maybe at the VA, or Benghazi, oh I know, how about the IRS?
Yep, he sure has turned the country upside down. What a dog and pony show he turned out to be. Or maybe the expression "all hat and no cattle". Yep boy wonder at his best.

I was going to buy a beef roast (not for sure what cut it was) but it was almost $7.00 a pound. I very rarely buy meat except for hamburger so I was astonished at the price. Needless to say I didn't buy it.

Boneless rib eyes were on sale $7.99 lb this week. I am burning meat later today! Looking at the price of t bone or porterhouse does make me feel sad.....too much waste on the meat to pay the price. Price per lb is bad, but price for the steak is even worse. Sticker shock
Once in awhile filet migon will be on sale for $9.99 or $11.99lb, and we love it on the grill. No waste, all meat, tender as anything, melts in your mouth.
I never freeze steaks. Never tastes as good as fresh meat.

I'm going to state the obvious: What is the point of this thread? No longer affordable groceries. IT seems things are not rosy for many of us on this board.
My political viewpoints are over and done. We should have never started going down this road.

Not really, the economy is doing better. Here its sort of a one trick pony, either construction or coal mines. Anything distorts those two not much else for these folks to get a job paying anything.
Also the nearest city is dependent on colleges, there are 4 or more there and those kids will take jobs for whatever wage to help supplement so that makes it hard for locals too. Also here the population is aging fast and the young get college educations and leave if possible, the jobs their parents had and retired from are no longer here due to outsourcing, yes, NAFTA did indeed cause the giant sucking sound. Also Pence our governor is killing this state, educational system and everything. He is cutting the guts out of it reducing taxes on businesses, our local taxes and sales taxes are rising and rising on the individuals.
I've been out driving around the area, lots of building, remodeling and even some new places of business. Our main town area is sprucing up with a lot of the old buildings getting brick work done and new windows put in, so I think it is improving.
Also the national debt is way down, lot of good news about the economy, hope it continues improving. Bringing jobs back home would give everyone a job, a shame the companies can't settle for fantastic profits but instead want collasal profits and bonuses only. Pat, the national debt is not down. The actual government DEFICIT spending is decreasing, but we are still spending more than tax revenue coming in. The debt is alive, well, and growing incrementally.

The other issue is politics, Indiana is a republican state except for a lot of southern counties, so this area is excluded from anything they can to punish us.
I remember when highway 41 was 4 laned all through the state, our county was not for many years. Somehow they were finally forced to do it, don't know if it was the feds or what but it was finally done. So there is a great deal of politics involved in punishing those that dare to vote for a different idea and party.
Yep I will stop on politics too. I just hate to hear the current admin get kicked for stuff that has been coming down the pike for 40 years or more, no one pres can fix it although 1 president as we saw in the past can destroy it.
Ok, lets say the national debt is declining, how is that, a better statement?
It's always amazing when another party has a view but the other party weighs in, who said nothing before about party politics and then its all no we don't talk about that anymore. Ok, done.
Pat, is that around the Terrehaute area? You have not seen Indiana state politics ignoring a part of the state until you visit Lake and Porter counties. Indianapolis literally kills residents up here by ignoring I 65 and I 94 during the winter by not plowing or salting the roads, and yet over by South Bend plows are always available. Governor Pence actually had to apologize this year after having I 94 closed for a day due to a horrendous pile up near Michigan City that killed people, I 65 winter accidents probably kill about ten to fifteen people every winter due to lack of plowing salting during and even after snow storms in a three county stretch.

I just heard about the smaller individual pieces to toilet paper. They used to be 4.5 x 4.5 and they are now something like 4.1x 3.7 or so.

I know ours slides around, but I never considered why until I heard this info on TV. I wonder how much smaller a regular size tissue has become.

Political comments would be best located in the appropriate forum/thread. THIS lovely thread is about grocery prices, grocery shopping, ways to save, good deals, sticker shock over prices, etc. (In other words, grocery-related) Further political posts in this thread may mysteriously GO POOF with no further warning. New food saving recipes:
Salmon croquettes.
Powdered peanut butter in oatmeal. Fat is out of the powdered peanut butter.
Quinoa meatballs. 2 1/2 cup cooked quinoa 4 eggs 1/2 tsp sea salt 1/3 cup chives 1 onion 1/3 cup parmesan cheese 3 cloves garlic 1 3/4 cup whole grain bread crumbs 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
The recipe said to brown them. I think they would be nicer baked.

LOL Molly! My determining factor on whether or not a grocery item is a good purchase is whether or not my hand recoils from it when I see the price.
