I was talking more about elected representatives as opposed to teachers, fire fighters, police, etc.
I know. In order to produce a budget surplus, really "hard" decisions would be required. Priorities would need to be established. It goes without saying that mass demonstrations woudl ensue.

I thought you meant to include teacher unions and public employees in dividing up the budget surplus.

How about we do this...all Congress, President, and Vice President salaries come from budget surpluses. Whatever they have left over gets divided up equally among everybody. I wonder if they'd still have trouble balancing the budget? I am sure that the Government Accounting Office would be showing rather large budget surpluses every year.

I guess we should probably add that 50% of the budget surpluses go directly toward paying down the debt.

what if it was a "clinton" surplus? ;D The airwaves would be flooded with advertisements, commercials and demagoguery. like the UFT in NY. "the mayor won't ask his millionaire friends to pay their fair share". i bet a sigh of relief went through all the millionaires and billionaires that aren't friends with bloomberg.

Did you see that on tv the other night? Angry mobs were chanting: "Tax the Rich"..."Tax the Rich"..."Tax the Rich".... it was laughably embarrassing since the wealthy already pay most of the taxes.

I have had a problem with what the POTUS is paid. I don't mean the current one, the past one but what is a correct figure today. I realize there are expenses he is also taken care of with , the Camp Davids other perks, but I am talking just his annual salary. Today I believe it's $400,000 per year. To me that is a stupid salary..has no meaning . To me , a correct salary for a POTUS should be $1,000,001 per year and my reasoning for that is simple. Even today, a million a year is a important figure..impressive, you have arrived, you are in a important position and this salary is because it is recognized that it is a very, very important position that major decisions and leadership is asked by anyone holding the position and such is recognized. Why the extra $1.00? Because that also sends a message. There is no way a proper figure can be put on the position to compensate a individual to hold that position so the $1.00 is a way of saying that it is recognized there is no way to adequately compensate some one to hold such a position and we recognize that, ,thus the million because of the job and the responsibilities of it and a extra $1.00 to say we haven't a clue as to how much to pay some one for all this responsibility. I am not talking about our current or past POTUS...what I feel it should be and why. POTUS: 4 X Median Wage VP: 3 X Median Wage Supreme Court Justice: 1 X Median Wage- a mostly voluntary, and not full time job. Members of the House and Senate: 2 X Median wage for the the 4 months a year-- one month each quarter-- that they would be permitted to meet. NO retirement, and only private benefits paid by them. Term limited to two terms. No Federal funding of campaigns. No campaign contribution limits, but ONLY individual natural citizens may contribute to campaigns with FULL disclosure made public in their local paper and on the internet. No PACs, No corporate donors, just PEOPLE. ALL laws sunset in 24 months. ALL. No exceptions. Every two years, your great idea has to be reinstated or it goes away. And while it'd be completely unConstitutional, I'd love to see the Constitution amended to only allow campaigning within 60 days of an election.

I would encourage you to think seriously what the effect would be with a constant turnover of people (who we have only a limited about of time to get to know or have celebrity status already) reconsidering all laws in very short sessions.

That's absolutely silly. There's hundreds of laws, and do we really need to vote on whether stealing is illegal or not? And the second after those laws sunset, can everyone go on a "crime spree"? I put that in quotes because nothing would be illegal. They better hurry and pass those laws; I guess they should start with murder and work their way down. They better work double overtime when they start.

There's hundreds of laws
Hundreds? Try tens of thousands. You are so constricted you don't even realize it. Oh well. As long as you're happy in your little world.

Rather then sunset the laws, amend the Constitution so that only the House passes any new legislation and the Senate only repeals legislation. We have tens of thousands of laws on the books we could easily do without. I would start with anything related to hate crimes and then begin on affirmative action.

Oh yea. Use the military pay scale for paying elected officials. Same retirement plan also. Hold annual Internet elections for increases in rank.

Don't forget POTUS is pretty much guaranteed book deals and tons of paid speaking engagements for many years after POTUS is done being POTUS. Also POTUS gets security and stuff after being done with the POTUS thing as well

I would imagine that the salary of the President is nothing compared to the benefits during and after...
