That's part of expenses covered Well, the first and last. I don't see why I have to pay for the middle two.. might get the president to push for free college So a Senator should take six years without any college savings for their children? No new music? Who decides what are authorized expenses? Why not just a reasonable salary instead?

As far as I'm concerned, all expenses (save Rolls Royces, etc) should be considered reasonable. I also said there should be a pittance salary paid ... say the average for the country at the time. There's an incentive, and the entire salary could be put into savings. Also, the senator shouldn't have to serve for six years. Two to four would do nicely.

Ok, fine. A reasonable salary would be no more than what an average American makes.

Paying little for short periods of elective service will ensure that the only people who will run are the wealthy, retired, or those who know that they will be taken care of by a special interest when they leave office.

Well, hell, bill! If an individual can't see the honor and privilege of serving his/her fellow citizens, I don't really want them leading me, anyway. Surprisingly, I don't believe it would be only the wealthy, or the retired, who'd be interested, and I do believe there'd be capable people who'd do the job. Everybody isn't in this world for the almighty dollar. Of that, I remain certain.

Much props on that. I realized at some point I don't have the personal drive to homeschool my kids. I wish I did. My boredom is completely self-induced. I'm going to go wallow in my own self-pity now

You people are bickering about the most insignificant part of being in high office, the salary and perks. Why don't you dig a little deeper and follow the money from their connections and supporters. Some of these trails have been brought to light over the years such as Whitewater, all the preferred loan deals ect. ect. Imagine all the ones that go unreported. This corruption is really one of the primary problems of the entire US government structure and must be written into law that anyone convicted of such gross beaches of public confidence will be dealt with in the ultimate manner. That will be a good start to the new generation of US governance once the inevitable meltdown and chaos runs its course.

I think politics should be an unpaid career - because it shouldn't be a career. It should be a volunteer position, done by people who actually give a crap. agree! ;D

Babe Ruth was asked by a reporter for the New York Newspapers that he was earning more money than the President of the United States, Herbert Hoover, and shouldn't that bother him?.
..."I know, but I had a better year than Hoover." – Ruth to a reporter who objected that Ruth was demanding a salary higher than President Herbert Hoover's ($80,000 vs. $75,000)

Stick to it SF: The Waltz is a beautiful dance. Not to mention when I am down I listen to waltz music. I would like to learn the waltz, but can you imagine a redneck waltzing the dance floor. Would look like to game roosters in a cock fightWell if you had a hot babe in your arms you'd be at ease. If you are into country music there are dozens and dozens of country waltzs.

Bingo. How many reps and senators took huge campaign donations from special interests, then left office and went to work as a lobbyist for those industries? Former Rhode Island Senator Ferdinand St. Germain, single handedly wrote Savings and Loan legislation decades ago, which eventually destroyed that sector, then retired from public office and went to work for that industry at a huge salary. The examples are endless.

How about we do this...all Congress, President, and Vice President salaries come from budget surpluses. Whatever they have left over gets divided up equally among everybody. I wonder if they'd still have trouble balancing the budget?

Interesting theory... I like the thinking outside the box. Public employee, teachers unions and other ingrained special interests would fight this tooth and nail. The airwaves would be flooded with advertisements, commercials and demagoguery.
