I never accepted any awards of medals. Now bonuses are a different thing.

Like Sheila, when I was in the Air Force, they were very big on recognition but there was huge variance in how the units did it.
They had Jr person, mid-level person, small team, big team etc of the quarter, year, etc. I won Jr person of the quarter once and a plaque was presented at a unit gathering. It was pretty devalued when our boss said I won because "my name was next on the list and it was my turn" (as opposed to for any accomplishment/hard work) . He was kidding (guy had a weird sense of humor) but it was pretty embarrassing nonetheless.
At my last unit, I was in charge of organizing and submitting the recognition. Our headquarters was ~1500 miles away but our Commanders did a fabulous job at recognizing people and acknowledging their work. They did this from the most junior Airman to the senior officers/civilians. It was very refreshing. They even flew our contenders for the Peoples of the year awards to the overall unit ceremony. This was in a unit that didn't do much travel so a free trip to another state was appreciated. The winners also got either $$ (civilians) or days off (military). They also rewarded good performers with school/program (Like going to school fulltime on the govt's dime) spots (These were very selective) and including wording in someone's annual review to make them stand-out. This was very helpful, as the military is going through cutbacks/layoffs so these school/program slots and review praises helps the good people keep their jobs and/or get promoted.
