...:::"Here in NC, if you are not driving at least 20 miles over the posted speed limit, you WILL be run over.":::... This always makes me wonder if the posted limits are artificially low, or people really are just that crazy/short on time. 55mph on a major highway is impractical. Even 70mph often sees you getting passed. I was on the turnpike doing 85mph in the left and occasionally still had people angrily passing me on the right. I think some people just can't stand having cars in front of them at all. If someone is doing it badly, yeah I might slow down then zoom ahead. Its problematic though when *I* can't go anywhere because the person ahead of ME is going the speed they are going and the road is packed. Tailgating me doesn't help when there are 4 other cars ahead of me! It does not seem to matter where--if the posted limit is 25, they are driving 45 or 50. Also, there are a lot of left lane campers. If people are doing the speed limit or less, they should stay in the right lane for the most part unless they have a left turn or exit soon. People are crazy behind the wheel sometimes. I think people driving crazy should be made to come in when they are caught and help care for auto accident patients. Had one recently who died--we couldn't pour blood in fast enough.

I do not thnk anyone should be pulling any kind of nonsense on the roads to "teach" someone a lesson. That is how accidents happen and road rage occurs. Is teaching someone a lesson in tailgating worth an accident to you and possibly worse?

I tailgate sometimes. I do not like using my brakes, especially on the highway. So I will let off the gas and creep way up onto someone's butt before I hit the brakes. Drives my wife crazy.

I only tailgate if someone is going well below the speed limit in the passing lane. Get your slow ass over! Every.damn.day. Some idiot gets in the passing lane on the interstate and then keeps pace with the semi in the middle lane. I am not dumb enough to pass a semi on the right so sometimes I get close to the person or flash my lights to get them to notice and speed up or change speed enough that I can pass. It irritates the hell out of me. The passing lane is for PASSING, or at least going more than the speed limit. Not 5mph under.

I'm just curious whether anyone here tailgates other drivers. Due to two accidents and the higher value I place on my own life vs. others, I am simply no longer willing to follow someone so closely as to risk impact if they decide to stop. A lot of other drivers though seem to think the space I leave is an invitation and often try to speed in front of me. I usually won't block people from doing so (and since I didn't buy a 110hp beater with manual windows, blocking people is actually an option) I just find it odd that others don't seem as concerned. I feel like it is quite common to see folks dangerously close to others. I'm not talking about for a brief bit before a turn or exit either, I mean like 2 car lengths while going 70mph+ Nobody here does that, right? YES!!
I tailgate!
If you are being tailgated, it means you are driving TOO SLOW!! Get the f' off the road...you shouldn't be driving anyway.

This sounds like you are a fatality looking for a place to happen. I hope you don't take anyone else out with you ...... or injure anyone.

Essentially, yes, but driving into downtown Seattle on I-5... you really have no choice. Luckily most commuters are pretty good at paying attention and driving in tight spaces.
If I'm on 2 lane highway in the boonies or whatever ... no. I hate tailgating. I always leave space between my car and the car ahead of me but invariably some schmuck will cut into that space. Oh well.

I sometimes tailgate people right into their driveway. But only if it's late at night and they're hot.

And if there are 14 other cars in front of the person you are tailgating (or just 1), do you still tailgate? That is what pisses me off. If there is a car in the right lane that the car ahead of me is sort of passing, then me and then you come up and tailgate me, WTF do you think you are going to accomplish? I'm not the person causing the slow down, the person who is can't see you, get off my ass.

I've been known to tailgate. It isn't an everyday occurrence and I try to leave room. Sometimes the person in front of me is driving me nuts enough by varying their speed that I get on their rear. I don't mind people going slow as long as I can pass them. What bothers me more than anything is that when you pass me going 80 and then slow down to 70 just because. Hold a freakin constant speed.

Yeah, I agree - that's a tough call. Generally in those situations you'll get a whole line, just like when you're pulling a train....you got to have some patience to get everyone through.

I get really annoyed with people poking along in the fast lane. Move the hell over. Yes, I have.

I only tailgate when the person ahead of me is going 80, and I want to go 100 in my huge SUV or quad-cab with truck balls. You know, vehicles that are designed for such speeds. Outta my way bitches! My penis is huge!!

Ultimate Fighting Championship? Those big fugly dudes with the waxed and oiled bodies, squatting on dirty, bloody mats and throwing each other around, pounding their opponents' body parts into paste? No holes barred, no rules, no such thing as a punch below the belt is too far below the belt? Those guys? Bob, I had no idea you were into that. Do you and Mrs. Ross practice together?
