I'm just glad you didn't use ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png) . Never on a Wednesday, except during October.
Sometimes I'd use , or even , but of course those have very different meanings as the table in the OP makes clear.
I have a perfect solution to this problem. Virgil should make us each a list of our own definitions and put them on our profiles. When I use ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png) (I use this one because I have no clue what it means other than it makes me look "simple"), the poster can go to my profile, look up my personal definitions and will immediately understand what I'm saying. Problem solved. You're welcome, Virgil.

Qwicher beefin' and get back in your boxes! The rules for those assigned to your particular box are posted on the east wall of the box. Read 'em and either weep, or giggle. Choice is yours. Resistance is futile! ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/muhaha.png)

We could even make up a masterlist, simply by assigning the letter-number combination indicating a particular emoticon - daleth-2, for example - with another indicator enabling identification of the particular person using the emoticon. We all already have unique names, so I think a sensible and convenient option would be to map those to recipients of the four major acting Oscars since the inception of the Academy Awards.
For example, Bette-Davis-Aleph-1 (I'm assuming there that is not being conflated with the existing Hey-1/2/3, although that assumption is not unquestionable; also, obviously, that becomes the 26th entry, aleph here understood to take the value 26 rather than 1) would be your first interpretative meaning of - we could simplify it to be equivalent to Hey-2 on Virgil's existing list, although there are nuances to your stated definition that wouldn't capture - while Cuba-Gooding-Jr-Aleph-1 (or, of course, Cuba-Gooding-Jr-Hey-2) would be mine.
ETA: Parenthetical clarification, because I didn't want this to get confusing for anybody.

I don't know what this means. I need a smiley to translate.
Wait! Is it that game Harry Potter plays on broomsticks?

Consider the smiley lexicon more like the English lexicon. We allow for a certain degree of overlap for sake of connotative meaning, nuance, flow, personalization, and in order to facilitate a degree of poetic license. Obviously the table won't cover bismileys (or more generally polysmileys) except for rare inseparable combinations (tantamount to multi-word 'terms' in written language). Trying to cover bismileys would be like a dictionary trying to define the meaning of all meaningful two-word combinations. For now, suffice it to say that any polysmiley whose definition is not explicitly included in the table should be interpreted as expressing the sum of the meanings of its component smileys, and in the event that two or more of the component smileys have incompatible meanings, the meanings of the later smileys take precedence over those of the earlier ones. For example: ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/laugh.png) would mean "I'm shocked and excited." (no incompatibility) ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png) would mean "I'm grumpy. No, I'm just kidding." (kidding takes precedence) ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/miserable.png) would mean "I'm being patronizing, and I actually resent your comment." (resentment takes precedence) ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/party.gif) would mean "I'm celebrating." (the latter component smiley nullifies the wholly incompatible definition of the former one)

Never did and we never will" And these boxes have signs?? There was a song about that too...."Sign Sign, everywhere a sign, blocking up the scenery, breaking my mind. Do this don't do that, can't you read the sign?"

PEEPS could we not let Virgil finish his dang list. Now I'm going to have to weed through 8 pages of EE crap between the first set and the second set. This is NOT what I need after a stress heart test. But carry on cause I do need the laughs. Which I can always count on EEr's giving me.

Pehaps a new emoticon can be added to represent "EE Crap".

I detect a problem.
For simplicity's sake, I'm going to refer to the listed emoticons in the order presented, assigning to each the appropriate letter from the Hebrew alphabet.
So for definition aleph-5, for example, Virgil has accepted GEL's argument - purely on its face, although with reference to claimed prior personal experience, a somewhat worrying verecundiam if you ask me, but nobody is doing - that can mean "I'm humoring you" in a sarcastic context, although in non-sarcastic contexts it does not.
But the purpose of emoticons is to contextualize the content of the post - itself lends context, the interpretation of which properly should not be subject to further contextualization. Beth-2, for example, would appropriately modify aleph-5, but then aleph-5 itself does not mean what Virgil's supposedly definitive listing would have it mean: the combination of beth-2 and aleph-5 has that meaning - and chet-1, whose stated interpretation is "I'm being patronizing," is arguably synonymous with the beth-2/aleph-5 hybrid. In the interests of efficiency, surely our definitive smiley list shouldn't have so much overlap?
Moreover, if we are to allow for multiple smileys - and I don't see how we can avoid doing so - then even greater difficulties arise. Consider, for example, the very reasonable pairing Gimel/Chet, which we could equally view as Gimel-1/Chet-4 or Gimel-2/Chet-2. The former case borders on sexual harassment while the latter might merely betoken the accomplishment of some difficult task (indeed, it's possible to imagine an individual for whom the achievement of excitement in a Gimel-1/Chet-4 context amounts to an accomplishment in a Gimel-2/Chet-2 context). But how are we to tell? How the heck did I get in there? Oh, wait, it's the Hebrew alphabet. Carry on. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)
