The price for business class was obscene and he wouldn't do it. $800 vs 4 k so why didn't you pay for it?

The Walk of the Penguin Mich -- seriously keep mentioning brands for footwear! I really like a couple of the Mephisto shoes, but SO expensive. Are they worth it? Do they last? I also refuse to take any footwear I couldn't walk in all day. If I could find a super comfy pair of "granny boots" with good tread, I'd be set, they'd look good with the dress.
I have 3 pair of Mephistos that I bought so far, brown suede flats, black booties and boots. The boots I stumbled onto, I wore a pair belonging to TD's mom and found them very comfortable so went looking for a pair. Not about to pay over $500, but a year later I stumbled over them at Sierratradingpost.com for around $100. One pair in my size, so snagged them.
Any of them I can wear all day, they are incredibly comfortable. How well they last, I can't tell you as I've not had them long, but TD's mom's boots are probably about 15 years and still look good.
The other 2 pair I found on zulily, I think.

We did the Rick Steves Rome tour. I think the tour was about $4400 of the close to $15K the trip cost. Granted, the airfare was a big chunk of that, but we still spent a lot for things not covered by the tour that were not particularly extravagant. What did you think of the tour? Good value? We are looking at the Talln, Helsinki, St Petersburg tour in 2015 and combining that with a river cruise from St Petersburg to Moscow at the end of the RS tour. Overall I would say its worth it and we would do it again. The group was small, I think we were 22, and our tour guide was great. The hotel was middle of the road, nothing fancy but clean and relatively comfortable. Not having to hassle with tickets and planning was nice and there are lots of little extras. Our guide had requested tickets to a papal audience months earlier and our group was the one who got the tickets so we got to go to the Vatican and see Pope Francis. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience. She gave us a couple bottles of wine from her family winery that is somewhere in Italy. She was also very accommodating to any special needs in the group. You do end up buying probably half your meals and breakfast at the hotel stunk. Its all carbs and no proteins so we ate croissants at 730 and I was ready for a nap by 9. I would have preferred something more substantial for breakfast because carbs just make me sleepy and on days when when we were out running around, I was hungry and tired by midmorning. We looked for a place to get eggs or something resembling an American breakfast but couldn't find anything. Even McDonald's on the corner didn't serve breakfast.

Some friends of our did the RS tour of Croatia and said pretty much the same thing (great guide, good value, they liked the other people on the group). In fact they are talking about joining us.
I'm getting tired of arranging the logistics (hotel, transporation, where to go.... so it sounds pretty appealing to me.
I hear ya on the breakfasts. When we went to Ireland it wS eggs EVERY morning. I do like eggs, but was sick of them by tyhe time we got home.

Thanks for the suggestion! It's probably pretty close to what I need--I LOVE my DSLR, but I'm not sure I want to lug it around or let it "attract attention".

Do Mephisto run small, big, regular? Pretty much true to size. I wear a 9.5, the boots are 10 but I wear heavier socks with them.

I guess I will be packing granola bars if I go to Ireland. No eggs for me due to allergies. And five weeks with a carry on? Hell no.

I bought a smaller point and shoot camera for El Salvador last year, since my DSLR would've attracted unwanted attention and looked like I was flaunting expensive things. I got a Sony Cybershot and am totes happy with it, worked out great. I'm bringing it to Ghana in addition to my phone (the new iphones have a decent camera!), I could probably bring the DSLR safely but I'd rather not lug it around. The Cybershot actually takes really nice pictures!

No, not really but it seems crazy to have spent so much on a trip and then have a horrible flight.

Yep, I was egged out when I was in England and Scotland for 3 weeks. After the second week in Turkey, I'd have killed for a bacon and egg breakfast! I ate some of the best bread, cheeses, veggies, etc. but I REALLY wanted the bacon and eggs! Wasn't going to get bacon there though, unless we went to a Marriott or something.

I've done 2 weeks with a carry on. It would depend on the weather. If it's cold at any point then no. I leave clothes and shoes behind, so my carry on is lighter coming home. Oh the joys of not having to unpack and launder much when I get home.

I guess I will be packing granola bars if I go to Ireland. No eggs for me due to allergies. And five weeks with a carry on? Hell no. While the full Irish Breakfast usually is a couple of fried eggs, Irish bacon (more like ham), sauteed mushrooms, half a broiled tomato, a couple of pieces of sausage (often including tastey and spicey black pudding (blood sausage)), toast, butter, and preserves, most places also offer other choices. You could go for the typically Irish beans and toast. (Yes, B&M beans served with toast.) The Irish oatmeal I had at a B&B outside Kilkenny was delicious. (Especially after host Tony added a splash of the Celtic Tiger to help crank your engine. Well, OK, the Jamison wasn't all that hot on oatmeal. But it was a cultural experince to tell about.) And then there were Margaret's delicious pancakes with maple syrup. Often, a more continental style breakfast, with ham, fruit, pasteries, Irish brown bread or Irish soda bread, or cold cereal as also avaliable. No need to schlep granola bars along. But, that Irish Breakfast does stay with you. We found that often we'd eat breakfast, have a light mid afternoon snack (more to sit and rest a bit than because we were hungry), and then dinner in the evening, and had all we wanted to eat for the day. If you're not a breakfast fan, pub lunches can sometimes be huge. I remember a bacon and potatoes pub lunch in Waterford. Must have been close to a half pound of sliced pork loin bacon, vegetable, and two kinds of potatoes.

Went and I picked up my shoes. I was determined to get comfortable shoes that didnt look like Birkenstocks or crocs. I will try them on with my skirt, dress, and pants to see how they look. They aren't HIDEOUS which is a start. I have one month to return them as long as I don't wear them outside. No worries on that end.

Rieker antistress in black called Doris 72 perfect strap. They are comfy and not too horrible to look at. But the other I am taking back. They look like orthopedic shoes.

Do Mephisto run small, big, regular? I wear a 9 1/2 and ordered a 10 "just in case". They were too small. I could get them on, but I wouldn't want to walk in them. They don't have 10 1/2 so i'm going to try an 11.

Crap. There was a pair on Amazon for 62$... all the other sizes styles were 168?.. in an 8.5 and 8. I usually wear an 8, but get 9 in Keen. I put the 8.5 in my cart 'to think', but they were gone by the next day. There was ONE pair of 8 left... so i just bought them before i lost them again. Hope they fit... if not i guess daughter can probably wear them... although we don't generally have the same taste in shoes ...
