I agree with the miles/year. We've put over 9K on my Toyota since we bought it in October! I guess if you lived in a city and don't have to drive very far to get anywhere it would be less, but still!

Are you guys comatose? A couple of years ago there was the Cash for Clunkers program that removed millions of old cars from the market. The question was geared to the frugal YM crowd. I wouldn't expect any of us to get suckered into that clunker "deal". But even on this thread, it does seem like 12-15 is the time when the problems get too much to stomach/confidence is no longer there. Interesting about all the truck owners and realiability record. They really were built as true workhorses.

I bought my car new 2 years ago. Both years I've put approximately 30k miles on the car. I doubt it makes it to 15. I also had a bad oil change that may have sucked some of the life out of the engine. I had it checked out before I took it back but you never know.

I drive a 1994 Honda Civic with about 120K miles on it.
Only needed normal repairs. Costliest repair to date was $1500 for a transmission at 104K. Repair man said it's good to go another 100K if I want to keep it that long.
My repair lady in CO said to sell it myself as people buy Honda's for parts--that I'd get more than I'd get in trade.
On a savings plan now so I will have a sizeable down payment in 3 years, but will keep saving and drive car until it is too costly to repair.

I bought a 1997 Ford Explorer brand new. In 2004 I gave it to my mom and her husband is still driving it today.

Vehicle #1 - 1997 Honda Civic, 188,000 miles Vehicle #2 - 1993 Honda Del Sol, 204,000 miles Vehicle #3 - 1989 Jeep Wrangler (it has a '71 engine, no idea how many miles) I like older cars. Plus, I put WAY too many miles on cars to want to drive something new

I got my new 2007 car in Dec 08 and it is my daily driver but I just got over 16K miles on it. I drive my 97 Dakota on days when it snows or might snow and when I need to haul stuff but not really much. If I retire in 2 years my car will have about 30-35K miles so should last 15 years if I drive it 10K miles a year. I live in a city so in retirement a trip to the store is only a mile or two, family is all within 10 miles so if I drove 200 miles a month it would be plenty. Dad only drove 67K miles in 10 years in retirement and that was mostly on long trips.

I have a 9-year old Chevrolet with 48,000 miles that I want to keep for 30 years. I want it to be my last car before they take my license away.

I gave my mom my 1998 Honda Civic when we moved to London. I'm jealous now that we're back in the states that she has it!! It's got over 130k miles and is still running strong. It's easily going to last another 10 years, especially since she doesn't drive it too many miles a year. [/size]

I drive a 1995 Chevy G20 van, it has 209,000, runs great but the problem is rust and rot not only on the outside but on some places of the undercarriage. I bought it used back in 1999 so I have had a long run. The 2 most expensive repairs were a rebuilt transmission and a rear axle.

Swamp lol, I know what you mean! I don't put that much on my car, maybe 15-20 depending on the year, but I also drive my car at work (I do get mileage reimbursement) so that can add to my miles. Same here! I put about 13-15K a year on my vehicles. It's 18 miles one way to work, plus I have to drive my own vehicle at work as well, which can sometimes be another 20-40 miles in a day... I bought a 2006 Toyota last April. It had 68,000 on it and I'm pushing 81,000 now. I honestly hope it goes another 80,000 though, at least.

I want a new car. I really do.
My car is a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero, 2 door, black. It has about 65k miles on it. I simply don't drive enough to warrant a new car, and the old car still runs perfectly well. My dad has a garage like a mechanic (he owns about 10 vehicles from Harley Davidsons to a Ferrari) and keeps my car in fine tune.
Because I only drive about once a week, I can't justify buying a new car.
But oh the ridicule I get when I do drive my old car, which looks fine as they never built a newer model Alero and the styles haven't changed in the last 10 years all that much. People just assume since I make six figures and my dad/family loves Porsches and sportscars that I should also be getting a new car. Places like this forum remind me that it would be a very foolish mistake to buy a new car just to make other people stop ridiculing me for driving a 12 year old car.

CA's story is why I also am hesitating on buying a new car to replace my 11+ YO with low miles but a hard life. My commute to work is only 4 miles roundtrip daily. Hard to justify spending a lot of money for this. Eventually it will come to that though, because life's not just about commuting to work, there are driving vacactions, etc.

1986 Isuzu Trooper, 170k miles, unfortunately the engine block cracked last Friday, we may try to replace engine 1995 Grand Prix, only 70k miles, DD car 1999 Dodge Durange 135k mile, DH business vehicle 2001 Ford Explorer 130k miles, mine, plan on driving it for a while
Right now we need to get 2 more cars (1 to replace Isuzu or repair, 1 for DS in college) so we are looking for some 15+ year cars.
With 3 teenagers, 2 in college and one going year after next, we need older cars. Can't afford insurance on newer cars.
We loved the Isuzu when it ran. Actually had it painted a while back and it looks a lot like the new Land Rovers (kind of boxy with spare tire on the back)

My 1994 Camry is still keepin on.
In my LCOL area you tend to see well-kept big boxy sedans from the eighties, and rusty conversion vans. Some of the shade-tree mechanics around here are geniuses, others not so much.

OMG, don't you people drive anywhere? I put 25k miles per year on my car. Amen, swamp. I am sitting here thinking the exact same thing. Really? I have to say that I am glad to only average about 8,000 - 10,000 miles or so per year, not wasting my time and money sitting in the car. 25,000 miles pre year, that must be like 40 entire days (24 hour days) in the car! If you convert that to 8 hour days, you have wasted one third of the year! Oh no! I'd prefer doing something else with my time .... ;D

Some people enjoy driving but of course it depends on the vehicle. There are vehicles more fun to drive than others.

I like driving, but at an average of say 70 miles per day, that's beyond my limit of fun. And about the vehicle: you are right, but nobody here at YM drives a vehicle that's fun to drive, right?

OMG, don't you people drive anywhere? I put 25k miles per year on my car. LOL, apparently I don't! I have a 12-year-old Honda Civic with 122,000+ miles. I don't drive to work anymore, so I guess that helps. I "lucked" into this car. My step grandmom died in late 2002 and my stepmom sold the car to me in early 2003 at a steeply discounted rate. It had 10,500 miles when I bought it. This year will be the first time I put more than $1,000 into it (got new brakes and shoes on Thursday, getting a new master cylinder either today or early in the week, I need an exhaust thingamajig, and a new manifold). My best friend is my mechanic, so I don't sweat repairs.

I have a 96 Nissan Sentra with about 214k miles on it. Still kicking. And swamp -- some of us live in civilization and don't have to drive 50 miles to the grocery store
