Fun aside, different mood. How is it possible that mothers of the sick to death children come to talk on TV about their dying children all made up like if they were coming to the Christmas party?
Do they really think they need to put mascara/lipstick on to talk about worse nightmare in their lifes to wipe it off with napkins during 'the talk'? Or I am being ridiculous and women should be women always?

Men don't normally wear makeup, but they do for TV. There must be a reason, don't you think?

I am disinclined to criticize the appearance of mothers of dying children.

Yeah really. People dress for funerals. Doesn't mean they aren't deeply grieving. Wow.

Well, it is really a "no win" situation. In the past, people were expected to suffer in stony silence. Public displays of grief or sadness was frowned upon. Now, if you don't cry enough on cue you are not grieving "enough". When my dad died under tragic circumstances, I literally cried nonstop for 2 weeks. Then, I didn't cry for a year. I still was grieving but it takes different forms. You can be suffering in many ways and not have it be obvious.

I do not normally wear makeup on a daily basis. I do get "dolled up" for holidays and any other occasion that someone will be wielding a camera, though. I am not vain over the "today me", but I am for the me that future generations will be gawking at in the pictures!

You need make-up on camera so you don't look like a walkng corpse. The camera percieves and portrays you a lot different than you look in person. It isn't about showing off, it's about looking normal on camera.
It's the same on stage. Your features need to be visible and under harsh lights they fade and so does the color of your skin. If you look at them off stage they appear orange/weird. If they stand on stage they look just as they would under normal circumstances.

The other issue is High Definition Television, which shows every facial flaw. The makeup is a necessity, though sometimes, I think it's a little overboard, especially on older women; it tends to highlight lines and crow's feet, rather than hide them. And frankly, you don't want to see me without makeup. Ever. Calling me a walking corpse would be a nice thing to say. Without makeup on, I'd be arrested for environmental pollution.

Some of the women on TV go a bit overboard with the false eyelashes.

I've noticed that too. I think they're going to have to learn to readjust applying make-up because what works on a lower Def screen is going to make you look like Tammy fae baker on Hi Def.

i don't think i even understand this thread? No tv show is going to have a guest on and NOT have the crew put makeup on them. what does wearing makeup have to do with grieving. I have worn makeup to every funeral i have ever attended... did I do that wrong?

I think I am still remembering times BEFORE waterproof mascara. maybe that's why

I cannot wear waterproof mascara, and I still wear makeup to a funeral. I just bring extra tissues. Other than going outside for a workout, there's no such thing as going outside without makeup for me. The sight would make little kids cry and adults call the police.

I dated a guy who worked for a TV network, and picked him up at work after a filming day once. I arrived earlier than we'd agreed upon, and he had a full face of foundation and powder. I don't think I ever laughed so hard. Pretty.

I just got back from vacation, where I had to slather sunscreen on my face everyday and couldn't wear makeup over that, so all my photos from vacation are makeup-less. They aren't the prettiest site.

People who dare to so much as raise a camera in my vicinity while I am without makeup tend to die shortly thereafter. Ask me if I'm kidding.

OK, here is my prey...if you go to the funeral and bringing tissues - you know you are going to be crying, right? WHY are you putting mascara? So your crying be A MESS instead of clearwater tears So you deliberately making your eyes to have people looking at how you smudging black stuff all over your face?

I don't think I ever laughed so hard. Pretty. Years ago, I recall the wife of a TV actor being interviewed and asked what was the strangest thing about being married to her husband the actor. She answered, 'waking up to makeup on his side of the bed!'

Maybe they are so used to wearing it, and aren't thinking clearly through their grief, so they put it on without considering that crying will turn it into a huge mess.

I think they put this opaque orange stuff on you so you don't look shiny under the studio lights.

People often go through the motions of a familiar routine in the face of a significant shock like grief. They probably do it without thinking or because the familiarity of the routine is comforting somehow. I wouldn't read too much into it, and I would be especially careful not to make any cruel or unflattering assumptions. If one has not been in their shoes, one cannot know for sure every detail of how one would behave.

When my father died a few moths ago, I wore mascara. Yeah, I cried it off before long. But for a brief time, I hoped I didn't look like death warmed over. It's important, when you are going through hard times, to keep things as normal as possible. Otherwise you can end up in a really bad place emotionally.
Fake it, til you make it!

I have teary and sensitive eyes, so rarely wear mascara anyway. I do remember piling on the foundation after my dad died to try to cover the splotchiness.

I wear makeup to a funeral for the same reason I wear a bra, panties, nice shoes, great clothes - respect for the deceased and their family. And many times the makeup is gone by halftime in the funeral service but that's okay because I made an effort.
As for wearing makeup during an interview about your dead child, I don't have a clue because I've never experienced that tragedy. I suspect it's about trying to survive in a world where nothing will ever be right again, or maybe trying to reach out to others and give them a reason to hold on in the face of unspeakable despair.

Um sorry but the last thing you give a damn about when you are grieving is " how your makeup looks". Sheesh.

My answer is that you sure seem to sit in Judgment of a lot of people. And, sitting in judgment of grieving people seems of the worst sort. So, that's MY answer.
