We had some excitement this morning. Some of you may remember the story of Crazy Dad and DH over the dogs. This is the same set of neighbors. I call them a "set" because there are grandparents, assorted kids, assorted grandkids, and so on. Some of the kids are adults (Crazy Dad) and some aren't.
So today we noticed a sheriff's SUV in their driveway. The officer (or officers, I don't know) was inside for awhile, and then he started inspecting their two outbuildings. We were hoping they had been reported for code violations of some sort. Eventually, another sheriff's car comes up and the guys get out and start searching the yard. The original guy comes to my door and asks me if I know "Julie." I explained that I knew the owner and her son/DIL who are the grandparents and a few of the kids. But I didn't know Crazy Dad (I didn't call him that) or his wife's name. I then asked if "Julie" was the blonde. She was.
By this time, there are FOUR sheriff's vehicles across the road. According to the officer, "Julie" was being served a very minor warrant but lied about something in order to escape out the backdoor. "Julie" was dressed inappropriately for the weather, and now they were concerned about her well-being. Had she come over here? I explained that except for the grandparents, no one over there liked us very much because our dogs don't get along; she would hardly take refuge at my house.
They spent approximately four hours looking for "Julie." Granddad came home, shook hands with the officers, and within thirty minutes everyone left including Granddad. I have no idea if they found "Julie" or gave up. "Julie" isn't a kid; she is in her early to mid-30s.
DH doesn't buy the "minor warrant" thing. He says she did something big for them to invest that much manpower. This was when I was guessing bad checks. He thinks they would just come back another day for something like that. He's guessing a meth lab in the outbuildings. I did point that we hadn't seen Grandma in several months. I figured she left because she had to cook and clean up after all those people, but maybe the body is buried in one of the sheds.
As you can tell, it was a very slow day. We've been home for two days from school, waiting for a snow/ice storm. So we have to entertain ourselves. We are the closest neighbors, geographically at least, so there is no one to ask.
In all seriousness, I do want to know what "Julie" did. We had a hole in our window that turned out to be too large for a bb, according to the guy who fixed it. We already know the guy can go nuts. Bad checks wouldn't bother me. A meth lab would.
How do you find out what an arrest warrant is for?

Unless you have friends in law enforcement who will tell you, you can't.
You have to wait until she is arrested and read it in the paper like everyone else.
And they don't send out that many cops for a "minor" issue. They call you and ask you to turn yourself in. Most people do.

In our county, you can look up arrests on the county website. You need to know the person's exact name. Once you find the listing, it gives the case # and other information (like court dates).

Meth lab? Maybe growing some pot? Sounds pretty serious though with 4 sheriff cars. That's not minor.

If there were a meth lab in an outbuilding, I think you would have seen law enforcement personnel hauling out evidence.

Since the sheriffs inspected the outbuildings, you'll know soon if there was a meth lab. If the sheriffs discovered a meth lab, you'll see the hazmat (or similar crime lab) team out to collect evidence and confiscate the equipment.

She isn't arrested yet. I understand that. Susanna willhave to wait until she's arrested. But after that, she can find out a lot that is not necessarily in the papers....

In MN they show up as soon as they have their initial hearing, generally the morning after being taken in.

One summer morning at my last house, I ran outside about 6 am to get the newspaper. Next door were two police cars and a CSI van. CSIs were going through a pickup belonging to my neighbor's son who was living with the neighbors. My neighbor tried to tell me that the pickup had been broken into and that was the reason for the visit. Right......Even I know that in this city police don't respond to car break ins, much less the CSI team. Son was soon living somewhere else.

In his possible defense, I had a CSI van respond when someone broke into my car a couple years ago. Although this is just a mid-size city, so maybe they have less to do.

It doesn't sound like meth lab. You would have seen more police/cleanup right away.
One good thing about a small town is that you can find out all kinds of good stuff in the newspaper. They have a section where all police calls are reported along with the block (no addresses or names though). You can also see them on a map so it is easy to see what happened in your neighborhood. When we saw police cars at our neighbors a few houses down, we just looked in the newspaper the next day. "XX Streeet entering auto"
They also weekly publish list of all who went to the county jail that week. I have seen a few of my kids former schoolmates.
Sheriff's office is usually bad checks or other non-violent warrants. If there was only one car at first it was probably not drugs or violent crime.

They stopped publishing the police blotter in our local paper a few years back. It was good to know who to stay away from. The nicest guy in my middle school class apparently grew up to be a girlfriend beater. My mom always brings me back a copy when she visits my grandma in Florida (Pinellas County.) I love looking at the mug shots. They sent three police vehicles - a car, van, and an ESU truck - along with at least six cops to my next door neighbor's house on Sunday. All to confiscate his dogs. Another lady who lives down the block reported him for neglect. He was evicted by the bank, but left the dogs because they are not allowed in his new apartment. He had been trying to find them a new home, but no one wants to take in two very old, very large dogs. He hadn't abandoned them like she said though. My dad went out and spoke to one of the officers when he saw how upset my neighbor was getting. We see him every day, and his brother would stop by in the evening to feed them a second time. But there has been bad blood between them (the neighbors) for years. It's sad because they're going to end up being put down.

Many county sheriff's offices have their arrest/booking blotters online now. Not all, by any means, but quite a few. It can take up to 24 hours for the blotter to update. If there is an outstanding warrant, there may be a bench warrant case on your county or municipality's court website. You can look that up online too, if the county is online. If I knew where you lived (just the county) I could tell you.

Even I know that in this city police don't respond to car break ins, much less the CSI team. In Phoenix in the mid-90s, my sister's car was stolen out of the parking lot while she worked. Two days later, the police called, told her it had been found and asked her to meet them at the site. The thieves went on an extended joy ride and then vandalized it - including putting slashes in almost every interior surface. She hesitated to touch the car in case she destroyed evidence like fingerprints. When she asked the policeman when they would be done with it, he looked at her blankly. She clarified, "when can I look through it to see if any of my stuff is left? I don't want to mess up any fingerprints or evidence."
The policeman laughed in her face, told her that they didn't do any forensic work on stolen cars. From what he said, they just wrote up a single page report, handed her a copy and it went in the file... Nice.

A little over a year ago the county cops woke us up one Saturday morning. Someone had busted out my window. Apparently there was a crime spree in my subdivision that Friday night. They must have gotten several complaints and after they dealt with those, drove around looking for things. It's still kind of odd because my house is on a tiny little dead end off the main street with 4 houses on it. You could not have seen my busted out window from the main drag.
Anyway they asked if anything was missing. They'd dragged me out of bed and my brain wasn't functioning yet. One of them had on gloves and was ready to finger print the car if anything had been stolen. It wasn't until hours later I realized my gym bag had been in the car. So I got to replace running shoes so new that I hadn't paid for them yet. My CC statement hadn't ran for the month yet.

When I lived in the city that's what they did for home burglaries too. They don't care at all. It takes them a while to come out. When the house i live in was broken into, didn't live here at the time, they sent several sheriff's deputies and a CSI guy. He fingerprint dusted the ENTIRE HOUSE! I mean it was all over over te place. In his defense, most everything had been opened, drawers doorst etc... He said he got some good prints, but unless they caught the guy for smething else and printed him, it was unlikely they'd find him. They also brought someone out to close the door up for me, The jam had given way when the burglar had kicked in the deadbolt. Maybe being in the boonies is a good thing?
