CHICAGO — Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel was elected mayor of Chicago on Tuesday, easily overwhelming five rivals to take the helm of the nation's third-largest city as it prepares to chart a new course without the retiring Richard M. Daley. With 86 percent of the precincts reporting, Emanuel was trouncing five opponents Tuesday with 55 percent of the vote to avoid an April runoff. Emanuel needed more than 50 percent of the vote to win. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41715205/ns/politics-more_politics/

He steps into the role knowing that SEVERAL factions hate him. He also knows the score and it doesn't favor Chicagoans or Chicagoland. I think he can do a lot of good in a short amount of time and help turn the page for the whole market there. I LOVE Chicago (sure beats NYC)! The key will be taking non-car transit and commute to a new sustaining level.
May your 2x4 and ability to wield it beat all comers, Rahm!

Those Chicagoans love their crooked politcians...I don't think they would know what to do with themselves if they didn't have one

You know I am not Democrat or a fan of Emanuel, but I must say, I was pulling for him to win, for the sake of the city of Chicago. I think it is a great city. The other contenders were basically, to say it nicely, all losers. Rahm's heart is in the right place, and I think if he has problems, he will talk with the President for ideas and suggestions. I honestly think he was the best person that was running for the position.
My question is, how in a Democratic primary, he is declared the Mayor? Doesn't he have to run in an election against a Republican or an Independent in an election? I know in Chicago, that is just a formality, but is there another election, or not, or is this like Middle Eastern fiefdom where the man with the biggest stick is the ruler?

Election The Mayor of Chicago is elected by popular vote every four years, on the last Tuesday in February. A run-off election, in the event no candidate garners more than fifty percent of the vote, is held on the first Tuesday in April. The election is held on a non-partisan basis. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayor_of_Chicago

The primary was not strictly democratic, it was for all candidates. He garnered the majority of votes so a run off election was not required. The run off would have been between the two candidates with the most votes. It's best that he won this way so Chicago doesn't have to spend any more money on a election that he would win anyways.

Thanks, Bills. I just remember years ago, there were Republicans that were advertised on radio and television ads, campaigning against the Democratic foe, and this year, I cannot remember one Republican ad that ran. I guess there were no Republicans or Independents......just tons of Rahm ads and anti-Rahmn ads Usually there is someone on the City Council tilting at the proverbial windmill, to at least get their fifteen minutes of "fame" whether they had a chance, or not.
