So I have another year before I need to be busy the night of these parties. Actually my close friends are all really scattered up and down the east coast so I don't have to worry about it. On the plane ride from Las Vegas to Phoenix two ladies sitting behind me were into some sort of scheme like that. I didn't catch what they were selling but one of them was coaching the other on having a list of people to contact every x days.

My Mom was mostly a SAHM, which wasn't good for her, as the woman can not not be busy with a capital B. (She was a wonderful mom, just one of those people who, once both DBro & I were in school, really needed something more to do.) So, she sold those things. Still does. I don't know that she's ever made money at it, but we have some really nice things from it, it kept her busy, and its given her an excuse for vacations - "X is having their annual convention in this city I want to visit, so I'll go to the convention (tax write off as business expense) and use the evenings to explore someplace new." To the best of my knowledge she has sold: Princess House Crystal (in the 1970s, she still has a lot of it, and its still beautiful) Avon (multiple times, possibly even currently) Watkins Spices Tupperware Vitamins/Health Supplements (I can't remember the company name) Tax software (though this did lead to her being audited 2 years in a row, because the IRS was going after the founder of the company)
My BFF"s mom sold Mary Kay, and I had roommates and friends who sold Amway. The people at the top of Amway do make a LOT of money. That's because more than any of the others, its a straight up pyramid scheme. In fact, that's their sales pitch. Come sign up, then get your friends to sign up under you, and you'll make money from everything they sell, etc.
I actually like a lot of Avon products, but I don't any beauty products beyond moisturizer at this point, so it doesn't matter. I miss the tupperware from my childhood. Growing up, we had an ant problem (they turned our butter crisco into an ant hill) so nothing stayed in its original packaging. It was all instantly put into neatly labeled tupperware containers. I like the cheap plastic for storing left overs, but I would love to have more high quality containers to store my baking goods and spices.

I will say that 10 years later, I still love my Pampered Chef spatula that I bought from some SAHM friend. I remember it being really expensive, but I'm thinking it might have been worth it. My sister has a spatula from Pampered Chef and I love it. It is part spatula, part spoon. The closest I've ever come to doing anything like this is over 20 years ago when I had a Tupperware catalog "party" (just asked gals in my babysitting coop if they needed any Tupperware and handed them a catalog). I was able to get a lot of "free" Tupperware based on the proceeds from my "party" and I still have and use most of it.

It's been eons since I've been invited to any "parties". It might have something to do with my age group.....having everything one really needs. However, if I'm invited to anything I want no part of, I just say that I'm really sorry, but I have other plans that day/night. So what if my plans include curling up on the couch & watching a movie.
Amway.....HATE Amway. My ex & I were very close friends with another couple & we had children the same ages who were also best friends. They invited us over one night & said we'd have to get a babysitter. We asked them straight out if it had anything to do with Amway, since they had started using some of their products. They lied to our faces because that's what the Amway rep told them to do....not let anyone know ahead of time that it was an Amway "party".

the home; My mom's is from the mid-80s, so 25 years ago, and its clear with red lids. She still has most of it. We also had tupperware plates and cups, which were fabulous for us as young kids - we couldn't break anything. I think after we got those, my brother and I (or any of the neighbor kids eating at our house) only ate off real plates on holidays. I really do miss the neatly labeled containers, and its sooo much easier to scoop your flour from a tupperware container than a bag. In fact, I have one good piece, and it holds our flour.

I remember when I went to a MK party they kept going on about how you get a car! I told them I already had a car. It was hysterically funny to watch how pissed off the lady got the longer it took her to try to convince me to sign up.
She got REALLY mad when I told my best friend this was a pyramid scheme and don't sign up.

I like when you actually say that you don't wear makeup or want their product. The fun begins then for sure.

They also don't like it when they try to sell you on how you can make your own hours and you point out that your job pretty much allows you to set your own as long as you get 40 hours and I don't have to sell crap to do it.

You can make your own hours - as long as it is nights and weekends.

They kept trying to convince everyone that the universities were a good places to sell. I was working at one of them at the time and the community boards were littered with Avon and MK sales pitches. I think that market is already a wee bit saturated.
Don't like it when you tell them that either.
Logically you'd have to have a very large untapped and willing customer base to make it really work out. Even selling some to family my friend didn't make enough to recoup having to buy her products at 50%.
She said that is what they don't tell you. You have to buy the stuff at 50% and then try to sell it at 100% and it's overpriced at 50%!

Generally speaking, I go to these for the food. I usually limit these to 1 item per party. I refuse to book a party, not my thing. Nor am I likely to be a repeat customer. Some people are very good at it. I do recall going to a jewelry party and being the star of the show. LOL.

I can remember the sister of a friend trying to convince me to book a princess house party (i only went to that one so i could see the inside of her new house... i'm so shallow)... she kept going on and on about how much free stuff she was getting... but it took me like an hour to even find one thing i wanted to order in the book... why would i need lots and lots of it... even for free...

I got asked to the 31 thing. Yes, it did appear to be purses or something (I didn't look through it all). That's when I said I was trying not to spend any money right now.

I had a neighbor that only invited me to her house for umpteen "sell-me-something" parties. Princess House, Tupperware, you name it. After a few of them, I started to feel like I was being used. Since then, it has been my policy to be "busy" when anyone I know is having these parties.

Zib and Dramaq: MK seems to be the worst. Saleslady: Wearing MK makeup will give you self confidence. My reply (as some who does not wear any makeup): No thank you, I already have self confidence.

I'll admit I am a consultant for one of those kind of companies. It is something I swore I would never do and after we bought our current house was looking for a way to make some $, meet some people, and get some things for the house. I did okay the first year, but I have a FT job and this isn't my career. I limit to a few open houses at my home and if someone wants to show up fine, if not fine - I don't pressure someone - not my style

No, not pampered, but I do know someone that works in about every one of the home party businesses. Do a vendor show or two and pretty much you know them all!

I was invited by a casual acquaintance to an MK "demonstration" where I'd be asked to give them my opinion of various products. I told her I don't wear makeup at all so I really couldn't provide any useful feedback. That got me off the hook. I'd be all over some saleslady who would claim that something in a jar would give me self-confidence.

No MK make-up makes you look like Tammy Fae Baker.
I swear the woman hosting the party was wearing every single item she was selling, it was like pancake make-up I used to wear when I did theatre in HS.
No thanks.
The other one wasn't wearing ANY make-up.
If you are going to convince me to buy your product you should A) be wearing and B) wear in a manner that doesn't make me think "circus clown".

I forgot, I have gone to one of the MK parties before! It was when I was in high school and I thought my mom and I were just going over to my aunts house for a visit. But then they took a "before" picture, my aunt dolled me up with prostitute-heavy makeup and took an "after" picture.
The photographer was a kid about my age, and he quietly told me..."you looked way better in the Before pic."

I have to admit I used to sell Tupperware - way back in the late 70's and made lots of money and prizes doing it, but that was before they started selling plastic containers in every grocery and department store in town. Tupperware was the only game in town and everyone loved it. It also kept all those bugs out of flour, etc., so everyone wanted it.
I actually made more money selling it part-time than I did at my full time job.
I've been to a lot of other "parties" but seldom to go to them any more. I had a friend who sold MK but I don't like their makeup so I never really bought anything. That same friend was into another scheme a few years later called "Market America" which was for vitamins and stuff like that. It was a purely MLM scheme and she never made a lot of money but sure spent a lot going to their "training" seminars. They actually had to pay to attend the weekly meetings and the quarterly seminars as well as the hotels, meals, transportation to the event, etc. I'm sure she spent way more than she ever made from selling the products.
I do like Pampered Chef, but I have quite a bit and don't need any more, but I still get invited to the parties. I just say I'm busy on that nite - makes it a lot easier to not spend money on something I don't need.
We've got small grandkids and don't entertain much any more unless it's with the family, so I don't need all that fancy stuff anyway. And I don't have the room in my small kitchen for it either.

I hate these so-called parties with a passion and am always shocked that so many of my friends get sucked into signing up as a host. Why oh why do people sign up for these things? Seriously, your friends and family do not want to go to these things but feel obligated. Please do everyone a favor and find a better way to make money and invite them over for a real party. I just now got invited to a Tastefully Simple "Party". I haven't been to one, but I assume this is overpriced junk too. I guess I will either ignore it or say no and try not to offend my friend who is hosting.

I get annoyed by the jewelry parties. One year I was invited to 8 different parties for several different companies - I think I went to one of them. If I want jewelry my husband better have bought it for me!
I have a big open house every year with my company and it has grown to be a craft/antique/vendors in my home. Every year jewelry vendors come out of the woodwork wanting to sell - I've had to make a rule and limit it to 2 jewelry people - one year I had too many and it was like jewelry wars in my dining room.
Tastefully Simple - kind of pricey, but I love Nana's Apple cake.
