Western South Carolina. It was 10F at 6am today. It's now 18F. The winds have died down, thankfully, so we're free of the wind-chill factor. No precipitation expected. High to be 28F, low of 19F. Cold for here, but certainly nothing like some of you are experiencing.

My new home state, Wisconsin...
a balmy minus 20 air temp with a wind chill of minus 40
This gives a new meaning to the term"cold"

Our Massachusetts town replaced its high school a couple of years ago. We used to have a California-style high school campus with separate one-floor buildings for each subject area (i.e., the Math building, the Science building, the Administration building, the gym, etc.). Kids were required to go outside to access other buildings. So, since this is New England and we have 4 very distinct seasons and blizzards and hurricanes and ice storms, we replaced the California-style one-floor buildings with...3 separate buildings -- a classroom building, an Administration building, and the gym/field house. And, yes, the kids still have to go outside to access each building. So, if it's good enough for school for my kid to be traipsing between buildings (with no jacket, of course, because no one wants to carry a jacket around all day) at -13 windchill, then it's good enough for me for them to wait for the bus in the same weather.

I'm just friggin cold!!! School took in couple hours later here. I'm like CL, I have to dig around for something heavy to put on. I have a blue jean jacket and a few sweat shirts. I do have some thermal underwear that I bought when headed to the Dakotas years ago so that helps some. I have a renewed admiration in you folks that deal with this on a day to day basis for months. I would just move to Hawaii instead Big frickin' woosie here... I looked in my closet not long ago and this is what I have: 1 long sleeve button down cotton shirt, 1 same kind but 3/4 length sleeve, a Bud Light sweat shirt and a handful of very thin cardigans that are more decorative than warm but are usually enough with a jacket for our cold. I stole a set of DH's long johns today, he only has them because of his job. My 2 oldest kids don't own any long sleeves that I can think of. DS may have a dress shirt or 2 and that's it. They are always fine with short sleeves and a jacket. I can't wait for it to get to the 70s on Saturday

Did the architect actually get paid for that building? Because that is ridiculous. Who does that? What school board agrees to that design?

Pfft, they're indoors today and if they go to school tomorrow, they'll be indoors all day (they have one building schools ). They'll survive one more day until it's our "normal" cold. Then I won't have to worry about that pesky overnight shipping charges.

When you get some answers, please share them. In nice weather, yeah, it's a wonderful thing that the kids can wander outside and get some fresh air. But, would it have hurt them to at least put covered walkways between the buildings? Oh, wait there is one between the gym and the Administration building. But, it's a 100 yard uncovered walk at least from the classroom building to the Administration building (cafeteria, auditorium, nurse, fine arts classrooms, etc.).

We had a couple of shopping centers built here in the so called California style. What with humidity and heat index of 95 to 100 and 65 inches of rain annually you can bet they were a hit LOL Enclosed and A/C is the plan of the day here. Those two centers have a hard time keeping stores open. Wonder why?

It is up on the prairie too, lots of wind. My mom and Grandma stopped going to Peoria often after that mall was built. Of course they town they are near got a Kohls and a Hobby Lobby about that time as well. And they go over to my Great Aunt's at least every other week, usually more like 3 times a month and hit the mall there.

I'm doing the Civil engineering for a new elementary school and OMG is the school board involved. They have had an insane amount of input over my stupid detention basin (I used standard engineering practice, but somehow they wanted something more that I could not provide). I can't imagine an architect giving them a design for something that is dysfunctional for the climate and them being ok with it.

Upstate NY. It's about 4 with 30 mph winds and gusts to 50. I have no idea what the wind chill is.
South of me is getting over 4 feet of snow.
Im sending some of my kids cold weather stuff to chocolate lover. DS doesn't meet 5 sets long underwear.

WNY. Schools were open for my kids yesterday, EVERYTHING is closed today. I heard -5 and wind chills of -30 or 40, but the issue is LES. Yesterday about 4pm it went from clear to blizzard conditions in a matter of minutes, and everyone began closing preemptively for today. The traditional snowband areas south of us (where I grew up) have been getting clobbered all day, but we've had sunny and clear here, if wickedly windy.
Watching the news coverage of the state of emergency declared by the county to the south of us, the Cty Exec mentioned something that I'd been thinking: this is just back to the winters that I remember growing up w/. The last few years have been unusually warm and snowless.

Southeastern Michigan. It was -18 last night with a -45 degree wind chill. It was awful. Right now, it's -4 with a -23 degree wind chill. That's still not good. We just got notice that we are working from home for the rest of the week, which is mighty nice from our management.
All of the schools are closed. DD's on her fifth snow day, but she's fine with that. She doesn't want the kids out walking in the neighborhood where she teaches. '

I haven't read the whole thread but I grew up in central VA (right outside Richmond). This seems normal from what I grew up with... And it was always explained to me that even though I was ok, streets and schools within the district were so varied, that they had to close to the least common denominator.
I was in chesterfield. So Matoaca had to be clear before I went to school...

Just got word that school is delayed 2 hrs for the kids. Seems to be the trend for nearby districts. DH's district is closed again, so he is delayed one hour again tomorrow. My boss gave me discretion on whether I want to reopen tomorrow (we'd closed early on Monday thru Tuesday) and work by myself. Probably will.

Camping in my house in AZ
Thermostat wasn't working. Spent the night in my sleeping bag in my empty house @ 42 degrees. Glad I'm here and not back East!
New batteries in the thermostat. Tonight will be warmer!

I'm in SE VA and it's cold and clear hear. I think it's about 20 our right now but it's expected to go down to 14 tonight and should break the record. Most of the schools are on a 2 hour delay.
I worked from home today because my driver said it was too cold to go into the office. Wimp!

Northern VA here and it was 5 degrees today wih a-20 wind chill and schools were closed because of the extreme cold. The email alert said it was for the children in the county who have to walk to school.

Location: metro Chicago Mon low: -16 (wind chills to -40) Tue low: -11 (wind chills -35) Schools, many libraries, village halls, & businesses CLOSED
Everything appears to be reopeing today. Supposed to be a 'heat wave' of 16.
QActually, prediction is for mid-upper 30's over the weekend w/rain = flooding since sewer drains are blocked & ground is DEEPLY frozen.

Schools closed due to snow. She's Canadian. I think she was being facetious It's warmed all the way up to -12 F here (east of Toronto) after 2 days of -30.
