It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

Sad to see such antiqity in ruins. Some Geoligists are now seeing a trangulation of major earth quakes around the globe. Seems as a pattern is forming. They are worried when this pattern will affect the US. We have several major faults from west to the east and in some areas are become more active prone, there are always small ones but they are hearing more sonic noise of late, however they figure that out. I hope not but we can only guess.

Christ Church is a truly beautiful city. To think of it devastated in this way is so very sad. Thankfully, I have memories of what it was, before this disaster hit.

Hee! Yep, there are lots, and lots, and lots of sheep, dez. Also, lots, and lots, and lots, and loads, and bunches of rabbits!
My husband was employed by the oil companies for over twenty years. We lived in foreign countries during that time, and had the opportunity to travel a great deal. It was a wonderful experience for our family and has left us with beautiful memories, and a more global understanding of different cultures and peoples.

I have many friends and customers in NZ and Australia. Queensland had the inland tsunami and cat 5 cyclone recently. NZ has had 3 quakes in 2 years. They had not fully recovered from the last one when this one shook. Waiting on replies from contacts now.
As for a "pattern". A global traveler I know remarked recently that nearly all of the activity has been between the Tropics (Cancer and Capricorn and Equator) and occurring counter to Earth's rotation. He wonders if a MAJOR vertical event is building. Next area to keep a tab on is the Mideastern region.

I saw some clips on the news this morning. So sad.
However, it made me wonder what New Zealand's building codes are like? Is it like Haiti where they didn't have any, so everything crumbled? Or is it like CA where everything must be earthquake resistant?

It's pretty close to Indonesia, which is in one of the hot zones, so I thought it was. I could be wrong, though........

not sure if NZ is in a big earthquake zone. I think a lot of their structures (at least the ones I've seen destroyed on the news) were very old - probably before any earthquake resistance building were available. It is very difficult to make an existing building earthquake resistant - especially at those magnitudes. I think it was A&E or the Discovery channel that I saw on that subject
