Anne that organizer looks amazing! Start, same with your bathroom shelves! So nice to see so many people and so much activity! Yesterday I had work, a funeral, then rehearsal, and got home at 11 pm. I need to do PW's nightstand challenge. Mine is full of books, which means I have to purge more books from the shelves to make room for those. Ugh. Not sure I'm up to that, I'm still having trouble breathing / moving. But I'm still on a reduced schedule till Monday so I need to take advantage of that. The roofers cancelled last week but they are here now replacing the leaky downpipe and "decluttering" the gutters (which DH can't really do anymore). Does that count?!

We cleaned the top of the fridge and kitchen cabinets yesterday and DH suggested getting rid of a coffee grinder we never use. One more thing gone!

Good work everyone! My first day back to work = no decluttering done. I have a meeting tonight so probably won't accomplish anything at home tonight either. Hopefully dh will though. Sent from my ADR6410LVW using proboards

As expected, I did nothing yesterday evening. Tonight (after work) the plan is to:
Wrap a trinket box that I sold on Ebay, so that I can take it to the post office tomorrow. Fold and put away two baskets of laundry. Declutter my nightstand - aka Peter Walsh challenge. (The top is fine - but I'm sure there are things in the drawers that could be thrown out.

Yesterday I cleaned out my night stand per the PW challenge. That's about it since C had swimming lessons last night, but progress is progress!

Hi and welcome to the lurkies and newcomers. My Kindle got dropped once too often by the kids so until I replace it, I'm not going to be online from home. I'm too lazy to haul out my work laptop to goof off online. I did get some stuff done this weekend though. So, my list for this weekend: 1. haircuts (11am appt. for all of us)2. work on closet in small bathroom3. sort kids clothing 4. start taking Christmas stuff down.I did start on the kids clothing but barely. But the closet in the small bathroom is rocking! I tossed a bunch of stuff; moved some to the correct room (like someone else posted, it's not put away in that room but it's closer to being properly put away...); and organized it. I've got 1/2 of a small shelf with some things I'm not sure what to do with just yet. So they can wait until the next round. Most of the Christmas stuff is put away. I tossed a couple of things there too. I'm not willing to do a recycle/donate bag right now - I've got a pile of kid clothing in my room from the last time I went though my son's dresser - I think they're 4Ts and he's in 5/6 now. I did tweak a few things in the basement but there's lots to go there. Cardboard recycling is piling up in the basement. I may make a trip to the with it, if it warms up. IT's freaking cold here, although somewhat warmer than busymom. But recycling gets picked up every 4 weeks + days off due to cold or holidays. And the cart is 1/2 full already. I also did a quick run though of the kitchen cupboards - I was trying to find a muffin mix and started sorting as I looked. Tossed some stuff there too. DH and I decluttered our wallets by getting a sitter and going out for dinner Sat. night too. Now, I've got a deadline to meet so I'm shutting down Firefox so I'll actually do it.

I have slacked off lately- sorry.
But we have still made some progress. DH did in fact go through the jumbo pile of misc. cords and threw out a ton of them (kitchen garbage bag full) and neatly stored the rest of them.
I'm going to have to "like" Peter Walsh on fb so I can catch up on his 31 day challenges. I did my sweaters right before the end of the year because I hit up a huge sale and bought a bunch of new ones and got rid of way more than I purchased. My nightstand is a table that only has my alarm clock and lamp on it. So nothing to do there for me- BUT DH has the same set up on his side and his is overflowing with stuff.
DS is gone to his YIG convention this weekend and DH has a tournament on Saturday so I will have the house to myself all day long. Thinking that will be a good day to make sure I am all caught up on the PW challenge.

I own 2 sweaters, and can't find either of them. I have got to finish cleaning out my room it seems. lol I haven't done much since the great table excavation, but it's still cleared off

I'm not on FB so I can't like him or see the challenges.
My nightstand is a table with 3 shleves - over flowing with books.

I did yesterday's nightstand challenge: I shifted some books around in the 1/2 bathroom and made room for most of the books in my nightstand. They were my "to read" books and I had completely forgotten about them!
ETA: Beth we've been posting them here, and can continue to do so.
Today's PW challenge: establish a donation basket (or bag), put 7 items in it, and keep it handy so you can add to it.

Rukh, painting a closet can be a (paid) weekend activity for a kid. Ikea has inexpensive but good closet organizers (not as nice as Anne's though). They have hanging organizers, drawer organizers, baskets, tubs, shoe organizers, etc. De-"cramming" the closet is probably the first step though, so you can see what's left, and decide how best to organize it. ETA: You could probably use either a hanging organizer or one of those vegetable carts, they come in different widths. Then each person has their own compartment(s).

I've got one of those weird spaces too, except mine is in the basement. And it's not walled in. It's got my bookshelves that need mending shoved in there, along with the screens/storms for the doors and assorted odds and ends of junk/stuff of DH's that got shoved there. And an in the way bed frame, possibly queen size.

Why is everybody "liking" PW on facebook? I haven't "liked" him, but I can still get to his facebook page and see the challenge videos - am I missing something by not "liking" him?
My apologies to anyone I confused - I accidentally posted this question on a weather thread (I since deleted it).

Same here, WW. I think if you "like" him you automatically get his updates without having to go to his FB page.

ChalupaBatman, if you have kids, offer to pay the winner if they find the glasses. You may find them yet. I have found mine is the most bizarre of places. BTW, they could be in the laundry room or garage. Don't ask questions, just trust me on this one.

I'm baking cookie bars right now using an old recipe of my Mom's. But instead of using chocolate chips, I'm trying the recipe using the mini M & M's I got on clearance. I'll report back on that...
I couldn't do the nightstand challenge, because, well, we don't have nightstands in our BR. We've got something much worse to clean. Our bedroom has one of those big wall units. Which means I don't even want to think about cleaning that out. First, DH has to "dig out" the floor on his side of the bed to even get to his stuff in the wall unit. That's one area I dare not touch. If I open one of the doors, who knows what might spill out on me.
I am going to spend time working on "my side" of the bedroom today. Plenty of filing needs to be done.

Busy, I said *I* did the nightstand challenge. I didn't say DH did. ;-)
Grits I think that is a BRILLIANT idea. For some reason my DD can find anything, anywhere, and we put that talent to good use when she was little.

Rukh- I agree that de-crapifying a space should always come first. Be on the lookout for things you can sell to make some cash then re-invest in the space. When I did my hall closet this year I realized I had paint leftover from a chair project and used that. Then I'd finally set up some new lamps in my bedroom so I took down the spotlight lamps and used them in the hall closet. The shelf was really gross so I covered it with contact paper from the bathroom cabinet project. A few 3M hooks provided some storage and I have enough baseboard remnants to replace the baseboards the next time my dad is in town. I still haven't spent any money in there!
When it comes time to spending money set a budget, usually you can find what you need because you already have it or can pick something up cheaply. But then invest in making your life better and easier.
For example, you might not "need" a nightstand because you can pile books on the floor and balance a cup of water on top and look, no big deal! I found my nightstand at Salvation Army for $12. Painted it white, painted the drawer black, covered the top in fabric. Maybe $5 for the "makeover" and another $3 for new drawer knobs. Best of all it makes things easier for me which is worth the ~$20 I invested over the course of 2 years
I've been sitting here on the couch working staring at the mantle and knowing I need one last coat of white paint. The paint is on the floor... the brush is on the mantle... have I done it? Nope.
Today I would really like to get the box over to donation so I can count those items. Maybe a smaller dropoff to consignment as well.

Startsmart, you're bringing back memories of my college years, & life in my 20's when DH & I had our first apartment. Anyone else here make bookshelves using boards & bricks?
DS & I are going to venture out in the cold, & attempt to bring Mom her laundry.

Ha! Rukh I know the feeling I work from home every day and totally get sidetracked by projects now and then. Of course I'm my own boss so Speaking of, I need to take a break from emailing cranky customers (for a client) and go do some laundry and dishes. Sigh.

Grits- My daughter is still pretty little, 2.5 years old. I will definitely be checking the laundry room and garage now though! Thank you for the suggestions A part of me refuses to believe they are gone. How could I be so careless twice?! My DH will be updating his wardrobe soon and I am very excited for him to go through his old clothes. I would love to free up some closet space, but I have a feeling that he will find reasons to keep almost everything. Today I will finally get the laundry finished! I have 4 loads to fold, and 1 more to wash and dry. I will get the dishes done and try to take the tree down so I can cross Christmas decorations off my list.

Rukh it can take a while to find a system that works. This said, to me it seems counter-intuitive to spend a little time in every room if you are trying to get them organized. Once they are, yes. But until then, you might be better off devoting more time to fewer projects. Dunno, just a thought.
Can you "assign" a room to each kid?
I spent all of this evening getting my courses / binders organized for next semester (which starts Monday). I've prepped the first 8 classes of my "core course" (out of 12, so 2/3) so I'm pleased about that. (I teach 6 of those classes so it's my priority.) I teach 3 classes of another course, that is basically done too, it just needs some tweaking, but unfortunately I left it at school, so I'll have to do that this weekend.
Then just two more classes to prep: one is mostly online teaching and I basically prepped it in September for the whole year, and I know what I'm going to do in the 3 "real" classes for that course.
The last class is a remedial class for incoming foreign students (and current students who failed a certain English exam) so I can't prep that until I know who is in that class, and why (ie at the last minute, that prep is basically ongoing).
The meds I'm taking STILL make me sleep (I slept for 2.5h today), so I can't take them when I have to work or drive. I'm going to try to stay close to home tomorrow and Thurs so I can finish the treatment before Fri when I go back to school. I'm getting better but REALLY slowly, ugh.

I did not do my nightstand last night. Still had a headache and not feeling well. I haven't done today's chore either, but I did have a trash bag full of clothes items from this weekends purge that was dropped in the donation bin today. There were way more than 7 items so I can count that for today. I also took two plastic bags of toiletries to a client and a couple items to a coworker.
I am freezing and exhausted tonight so probably not doing anything tonight either. Got some lab results today and have to see my doctor Friday to discuss further, potentially not great news but may explain why I am exhausted and in pain pretty much every minute of every day...
One of my most favorite tips from PW's book "It's All Too Much" is to not run out and buy all kinds of organizing "stuff" to get organized. You first need to purge items, decide how you are going to use a space and how much room you will realistically devote to XYZ item and only then purchase bins, baskets, etc. I used to be the queen of storage tubs and other items that still never worked as needed and that is why.
I, too, have a really awkward storage space under the stairs. My house is a raised ranch. There have to be millions that have a similar area under their stairs but I have searched and searched online for ideas and have found NOTHING similar...I thought for sure there would be all kinds of neat ideas on how people use the space. It's a lot of space but difficult to access.

Oh Constanz I hope it's nothing serious! Fingers crossed for you.
I have been having really bad chest pains. The doc thought it was a badly pinched nerve. I had a chest Xray today and he was right, there is nothing wrong with my lungs. I am VERY relieved. I hope you get good news too.
Funny, I too have a weird storage space under the stairs, off the DR! That makes a lot of us.
ETA: Constanz, you DID do today's task! And you've gotten a LOT of Stuff out of the house!

About Peter Walsh's FB page: I started a list of PW's tasks, for myself (just a word or two, I don't copy the whole thing). I wanted to have it. I bold the tasks I want to do, and then put an X near them when they are done. I don't do all of them but I wanted to keep a running list (mostly because I was curious to see if I think of everything he does).
I can post that list if anybody wants, either once a week, or halfway through the month, or at the end of the month, if any of you are interested and don't have the time or desire to follow his FB page yourselves.

chalupa- DO NOT give up on the glasses! Momma Bear thought she had lost or accidentally thrown away her dentures sometime during our move here last year (which honestly wouldn't have surprised me as disorganize as it was since she didn't help, I got sick and then my DB decided to get in the middle of it (and no, that doesn't stand for dear or darling)- but, I KNEW I had not only seen them, I had my hands on them. SHe found them after Christmas... in a Ziploc, in a travel bag, in her closet, on top of her fire file, in the darkest freaking corner of her closet, under an afghan. Go figure. After a year.
Yes ladies, as of the 3rd, we have been here a year!
The winter semester will be over in 13 days (not counting today since it is almost over)
I told Momma Bear that I intend on decluttering more stuff, as I am having a change of heart (and taste) regarding decorating. She isn't happy about it, but I am getting tired of having a bunch of chotchkes lying around. Oy vey.
Also on the decluttering list is my FB. Now, let me make clear that I do not approve of non-compete clauses and employers being permitted to have access to your FB, however, it is the way it is these days and I have "associates" who post things that an employer or prospective employer may find questionable- especially since I don't want to see it to begin with. One friend suggested making a professional page and personal page- but it's the personal page that employers especially want access to. SO, I figure I have 2 options, totally do away with FB- which is the only way I have to contact family and friends out of state, or redo my FB with a very limited, exclusive number of people on it. All advice on this matter is greatly appreciated.
And I have at least 2 totes of yard sale stuff packed up- but I need to repack it- so I will know for sure if it is 2 or 3 after I am done doing my project- next weekend.
STay warm!

I downloaded the app but haven't looked at it closely yet. Not sure how user friendly it is or what steps it takes to download it.

Miz, I tell people I work / go to school with that "sorry, I only keep FB for out of town friends and family". If you announce it as a (new) policy and you are consistent, you should be able to avoid "hard feelings". Are you on LinkedIn? You could use that for the people you work / go to school with. There is a way to "hide" people on FB without unfriending them, but you'd need somebody more tech-savvy that me to tell you how LOL. I know FB can be a PITA ... my closest friend at work and I have gotten quite close, and want to be FB friends. But another PITA colleague is constantly badgering us to be her FB friend and posts stuff constantly, so we both announced (separately) that we have the same "sorry but nobody local" policy. I too use FB to keep in touch with my kids when they are away, and to have news / see photos of my friends / family in the US. So even though I have few "friends", keeping FB is important to me. I have the same issue with former students, sometimes they request me on FB. They are always courteous enough to wait till they're not in my classes anymore, but I am not comfortable or interested in that. But, I always counter with an offer to "link up" with them on Linked In, and always do. Hope this helps!
