I make red skin mashed potatoes. I throw a couple of cloves of garlic in with the water, boil, then mash with a potato masher. I usually add rosemary when i mash. Couldn't be easier and couldn't be more delicious! In the fall and winter I probably make mashed potatoes once a month. Mashed potatoes once a month? Sacriledge! Twice a week at the minimum And lumpy, flour made gravy, chicken, pork, beef, does not matter. My wife is hooked on biscuits with gravy., but that is more the red eye type. I can take it or leave that. Butter and honey on biscuits is my down fall

my one SIL hates gravy made from drippings. no idea why, but she prefers canned or the gravy made from the powdered mix. I like gravy from drippings. though when I make my turkey pot pie i use canned gravy to put in it. it is so unhealthy, but man is it good.

No instant mashed potatoes here, but I do use my Kitchen Aid stand mixer, add plenty of milk, sea salt, and freshly ground pepper. Then I put the potatoes back in the pot, put it on low, top it with a stick of butter, cover it, and let it heat until the rest of the meal is done. Get rave reviews every time. They are smooth, not runny, and delicious.
I keep gravy in the jar handy on holidays in case there's a major disaster with the homemade gravy. Usually, there isn't.
But gravy in the jar is great for Ikea meatballs. (That gravy mix they sell is disgusting.) So I heat the frozen meatballs in the oven, toss them into the crock pot, add a jar of beef gravy and another of pork or turkey gravy, and let that cook until the house smells great and the kids are home, and then I mix in about 8 oz of sour cream, heat that through, and it's a feast.

Then I put the potatoes back in the pot, put it on low, top it with a stick of butter, cover it, and let it heat until the rest of the meal is done. Get rave reviews every time. Or do you keep it in the oven? (Which is probably full with other dishes)

I don't know for sure, Nancy, but the dry gravy mix doesn't taste like what they use in-store. Yeah, those meatballs sell like crazy. I have them every time I visit Ikea (which can't be more than once a year...). I buy a few bags of frozen meatballs to take home, and forget about their gravy mix. Once or twice a year, Ikea has this meatball mania day (that's not what they call it, but that's what it looks like). They reduce the price on them, and people line up for hours. Even the horsemeat scandal from last year didn't really slow down sales, other than when the product itself was removed from the stores for awhile.

I have a "warming zone" on my stovetop so I usually move it there after about 15 minutes. I can get the potatoes finished an hour ahead of the meal and it gives me time to put together the last-minute stuff.

No. It didnt' ruin them at all. I am not some food snob that can only ever eat or only enjoy homemade food. I'm not a food snob. I eat hog dogs. I just think canned gravy is a crime against turkey dinner. You eat hot dogs! OMG!

OK, I'll admit it. I use it. I do know how to make gravy, but making good gravy is not as easy as it sounds. I even used instant mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving. what exactly are instant mashed potatoes? Its like a coffee, you take a spoonful, put it in a cup and pour boiling water over it...stir it and drink it with fork!

Both gravy and mashed potatoes are awesome, but if we ate them as often as I'd like to eat them I'd weigh 400 pounds. So for the few times a year we eat them, I'll go ahead and make them from scratch. If you're gonna do it, do it right. 400lb isn't that much! And paleaze, if you feeling like you must have it - buy it in a plastic tub and jar and stuff your face all you want. Do not deprive your body from having it. Its a sin...
