sarcasticgirl You bet! My husband and I took a small trip to San Antonio which = margaritas on the riverwalk, and we had my son's 1st birthday party. My dad barbecued chicken and I stuffed myself silly. All reasons why I am avoiding the scale right now! At least they are happy reasons!

We had a BBQ Saturday... Ribs, pulled pork, sausage etc. It was glorious but I should admit that I was kind of pissed that I couldn't eat very much! And of course, annoyed that I couldn't take leftovers. I also skipped my usual request for my mom's homemade biscuits and gravy. AND split meals when I went out for texmex. But certainly got plenty to eat!
Now back to loading up on veggies and lean proteins... Must get under 200 this month!

Ladies and gent(s?) - I've been reading since the early pages and it has been amazing to follow everybody's progress and stories through 2014. You've truly inspired me. Over the past two years, I've gained almost 25 pounds and have had short spurts of intense exercise/portion control which manage to shave back 4-8 lbs of those 25. But nothing has stuck (mostly because I have a black belt in self-sabotage). Through this board, I learned about DietBet and I think 4 weeks of focus is the perfect amount of time (for me) to form new habits, concentrate on being truly healthy, etc. After some research, I joined two games and am looking forward to the accountability and motivation.
It seems like other people are hitting a June lull - anybody want to put their money where their mouth is and join a DB game? It would be great to have company!
I have 7.8 pounds to lose which seems daunting. My trend is typically that my body needs 5 weeks of very healthy eating and consistent exercise to see any difference on the scale so I could really use the help staying motivated when nothing.is.happening. I'm not sure why I signed up for a 4-week program? Turd! Anyway, one pound at a time!
Strengths: 1) Exercise. I have a consistent pre-work routine that mixes rowing on zhee Charles, boot camp classes, yoga, running, swimming - whatever works that week. 2) No booze. I've been dabbling with different "alcohol management" strategies since last August. I've had dry months, low booze months, and downright boozy months. My conclusion is that (almost!) every aspect of my life is better in the dry months. Being dry this month will definitely help my willpower, late night bar food, greasy hangover food, yadda yadda. 3) With a few exceptions, I eat "real" food. I don't buy snacks or crap because then I default to snacks and crap.
Weaknesses: 1) Almost zero willpower over chocolate cravings 2) Portion control! I love food. I love cooking food, eating food, serving food - and I keep eating because it tastes so d@mn good. The 'I'm full' portion of my brain often drowns in the dopamine floods of THIS IS SOOOOOO GOOD. 3) Sometimes that "real" food also happens to be really delicious goat cheese or some delicious but not healthy in high doses food. 4) There is almost always food leftover at work. Pizza, cupcakes, birthday cake. Willpower to not eat this stuff.
Sorry this post is stoic, I've been writing work stuff all day. I'm not this woody usually!

welcome scrgrl47!!!! welcome to the board. Things have been pretty quiet here lately... summer time I guess. I started this year with a diet bet... and it was a great motivator! I like the idea of getting involved with one again to get things rolling. Which games are you involved with? I have about 25-30 pounds left to go... I think? and I'd really love to get it off before winter so I can work on maintenance during the cold weather. Also, I'd really like to look and feel awesome during my Caribbean vacation in Feb!

Thanks for the warm welcome, Sarcastic! Maybe the group needs another challenge to get going again - bsb issued a really interesting one for the last few days in February. Maybe we could do something similar for the second half of June? A short two-weeker to get everybody back in the swing of things. The two I'm doing are: Aaron's Summer Shape-UpBet Big to Win BigI'm a WIRR too and while these are two of the more expensive ones, I'm actually thinking of these contests as two-fold motivation. If I win, the extra payoff will go to debt AND I'll be able to fit into my tailored clothes again! Double bonus, AMIRITE?? Started off well this morning, wohoo! Got a 10-minute cardio warm-up then did the 60-min zen bootcamp. I've cried multiple times in this class, it is NO.JOKE. The dude gives us 5 minutes at the end to do whatever we want so I laid quiet and visualized the day's food and the scale reading -7.8 lbs (eventually). I'm a former team-based athlete so what works best for me is being coached, being in a group, that teamy environment. When I'm left to my own devices, it's not pretty. Day 1 is always easy. It's days 2+ that get hard. What is the biggest hurdle everyone is facing in their journey right now?

My answer to your bolded question is: motivation. It is definitely the summer lull right now. I go to the gym every day after work but I really have to force myself to head to the cardio room instead of to the outdoor pool!
Welcome to the board and keep posting!

Sarcasticgirl & missk82: your texas bbq sounds so yummy Well, I was at 172 yesterday so I am moving in the right direction. I'm taking a class starting 7/7 so I'm hoping to get into a routine and then start the class and keep the motivation rolling.

biggest hurdle right now: work is crazy and I just want to go home and be lazy. allergies have been killer, which is exhausting as well. SO basically energy is zero. Laziness takes over and I don't get proper food planning in and shopping which leads to having no planned meals and I grab whatever I can.
I'm feeling really good right now though. My clothes are fitting well and I feel thinner and look better. I have had a few people comment lately, which is nice. But more so, I am excited to shop again. I'm trying to shop sales and keep things basic and jazz them up with accessories that I can use at any time (scarves, shoes, etc.)

greeniis10 - that sounds really painful. There's nothing like dreading the gym, dragging your ass there, just surviving your workout, etc. Are you training for something that requires that you be in the gym every day or is it habit at this point? If not in hardcore training, what about allowing yourself a few days a week doing some laps at the pool? Any other ways you can think of to break the rut?
crazylady14 - nice! If you can pass some of that moving in the right direction juju over this way...Do you have a plan to get into a routine before 7/7?
sarcasticgirl - totally hear you on both the allergies (pine, ugh!) and the after-work exhaustion. The latter is actually the only reason I bit the bullet and switched my workout schedule to the am. I get it out of the way early and don't have to think about it during the day and can go home after work and do lazy things like be lazy.
Congrats on the feeling great! I think Stacy and Clinton would totally approve of your shopping strategy :-)
Rowed this morning but didn't break a sweat because it was the first time on the water with a bunch of other novices and we basically just spent 90 minutes trying not to tip over. That probably moves my planned rest day tomorrow into a run day. BOOOOOOO running, I hate you.
Good day today, everybody!

scrgrl47, thanks, but it's not nearly as bad as I make it sound! Just being dramatic at the moment. I'm not training for anything, but I DO like to keep up the habit of going to the gym every day but I vary my workouts (their length, intensity and activity) because I get bored much too easily. But, I work early hours (6:30 am - 3:30 pm) so making myself go to the gym and be active every afternoon when I leave work is much more important to my mental and emotional health than my physical health at this point. I'm at the weight / size I want to be so I just maintain and work a lot on weight lifting for toning purposes. I have to treat my daily gym time as important and as routine as my work time or else the couch and some silly afternoon TV watching could be easily more appealing! Then I just spiral into laziness and depression. Anyway, enough rambling about me. Glad to see you posting! Try to keep us all active here! crazylady14, what type of class are you starting? And, your avatar is what I'm talking about as to what I'd LIKE to do every afternoon instead of hit the gym.

scrgrl47 UGH! yeah... allergies are the worst! of course i love being outside. which is a total catch 22. I need to get my upper body workouts going. My goal for the rest of the month is 3 Strength days a week. In addition to 10k+ steps: as long as the weather holds out, I can get the dog out for 2 miles after work.

checking in for the first time in eons. I haven't been eating well, haven't been working out (hockey season is over, so I'm playing here and there) and have put a couple lbs back on. I signed on for the June Abs challenge, but didn't actually start until yesterday. so I'm off by 10 days. FB link public event, you should be able to see it. the event picture is the details of the challenge. I will try to get back in here more often. clothes that had been getting loose are fitting again, and I don't like that. gotta get the scale moving in the correct direction!

welcome scrgrl47
crazylady14 keep up the good work.
I have not been motivated for the last few months. I set a step goal. Have a couple of low step days and lose all motivation.
I have not been eating well. Work is about to get really busy,

greeniis10 - makes so much sense. And I'm totally the same way with the mental and physical aspects of exercise. People have actually started asking 'when's the last time you worked out' when I'm unreasonably crabby and they're always right on target. At day 3 of being sedentary, I start to turn into a giant b!tchface and get all angsty about ridiculous stuff.
sarcasticgirl - you can definitely do that! Starting Monday, there are two full weeks of the month left. That means you only have to do upper body 6x by July 1 if you want to meet your goal. Totally doable! Is your schedule consistent enough to plan out when those 6 days are going to be?
chiver78 - do you want to do a DietBet with me to get back into the swing of things? It's my first time trying it out and I'd love some company.
Went for a run in the drizzle this morning. I think about the most ridiculous things when I'm trying not to pass out on my runs. For instance, there was this super svelte guy with a total runner's body and stride who sprinted past me (he was probably at his normal pace which I'd consider sprinting). I was imagining him turning around and scoffing at me for not being a "real" runner. Spent the next half of the run coming up with witty retorts. The best I could come up with was "I'm out here at 6am just like you. Running". So dumb.
Anyway, where does your mind wander when you're in the cardio zone? Cardio zone could be on a machine, walking the dogs, biking, etc. Whatever you consider it.

ners - thanks for the welcome. So you're already in a not great place and when work gets insane, all habits tend to get worse. What can you do between now and the start of the work insanity to get through the busy work period without total destruction?
ps, hyperbole is my favorite thing ever
pps, my food was controlled on day 2. I'm not tracking calories but I am only eating when i'm hungry, not snacking except for the 1/2 C of walnuts and 8 (yes, 8) bittersweet chocolate chips I pack for work, and am making everything from scratch. My intake feels like the right balance for me. We'll see if the scale agrees in 5 days when I weigh myself.

A dieting thread too! I love this board. I just started 5 weeks ago. My last 18 months sucked really bad and I dealt with it a lot by sitting around eating. I was worried so much about someone else that I wasn't caring for myself. I stepped on the scale back in May and realized I weighed what I did the day I went in to deliver my 4 year old. I don't have a huge plan here. I don't have a gym membership or the time to go. I've just started tracking my food intake and forcing myself to get out and walk at least once a day. So far that seems to be working. I lost a total of 7 pounds the first 4 weeks (weigh in on Monday mornings, so not sure on week 5 yet). I want to lose 15 more, so I think I may have to up my game a little bit.

Good job, mnpaintlady!
I am checking in because I need my butt kicked; I have totally fallen off the "no pastries with second coffee" wagon, and the thing is, I don't even enjoy them. Starting tomorrow, NO MORE.
On the up side, I am holding steady at 130.5 and I had my best workout in months yesterday.

welcome minnesotapaintlady!!! Great job on the weight loss so far. 7 pounds is great in 4 weeks! welcome back kilroy glad to see posters coming back to the thread. I need to bug Pants and get her back! chiver78 i signed up for that ab challenge too... then completely forgot about it! OOPS! I had a busy weekend... Street fest on friday night. Strawberry picking on saturday, brunch and shopping and long (3+ mile) walk today with hubs, dog, friend and her parents. I've been on my feet and moving all weekend, which hopefully evens out my not so healthy food choices. Did i mention that the last few days of my steroids turned me into a starving eating machine?!?! luckily that has passed THANK GOODNESS and I am back to a normal appetite. I've had lots of not so healthy food this weekend, but not in huge portions. I haven't been doing to great with hydration, which isn't normal for me. so my focus this week will be getting plenty of water in and also lots of veggies and protein. oh and if anyone has ant strawberry recipes, please post or share with me! I have like 10 lbs of strawberries!

thanks for the tag, sarcasticgirl. I completely forgot about today so far....will have to get in today's (10 days late) stuff before I head to bed tonight. will have to think on strawberry recipes, too. I brought strawberries Friday night, my sis made a vegan peanut butter dip for them that was amazing. I can ask her for it, and will post here if you like. scrgrl47 - I'm totally here for support, but I can't sign on for something like that right now. I could, but it'd just end up a gift. with everything in my life in so much chaos right now (the short version is that the condo I've owned for 8+ years is basically now just a crash pad until I can sell...) I'm trying to focus on eating healthy and being as active as possible, and just hoping that all helps the scale move in the right direction. I blew the rust off my tennis game yesterday, with a borrowed racket. I spent the weekend with my sis/BIL, she coaches the team at the small school where she teaches. I don't think I've played in at least 5 years. I did way better than I thought I would, even considering the racket that wasn't mine - although after that long, is familiarity even still a valid excuse? lol.... in any case, MY racket is already in my trunk, so I have it on hand whenever the opportunity arises

Damn. Monday morning weigh in was a bust. No change. This has been my progress so far. Starting weight 162 (exactly what I weighed at check in to the delivery room in 2010!) Week #1 - 2 pounds (160) Week #2 - 2 pounds (158) Week #3 - 2 pounds (156) Week #4 - 1 pound (155) Week #5 - no change. (155) I have to say though that I LOOK a lot better. I took underwear shots at 160 pounds and I had the love handles and looked 6 months pregnant. Now not much for handles and I only look around 4 months.

MPL- I would encourage you to take measurements as well... Sometimes when the scale doesn't move we are actually losing inches and gaining muscle. If you have been doing any kind of strength, that could be the culprit. Also, if you have been doing the same thing for a while, you may need to change it up.

*weakly raises hand*
I'm here. Ish. I haven't been doing well with food since getting abck from vacation - and now I'm sick again. Spent the last two days almost completely in bed. I'm committing to get back here and get right, but definitely need to do baby steps after being off the program for *gulp* 3+ months. Yikes, didn't know it was that long!
Ok, since my energy is at a minimum and working out is not going to happen given I can't actually breathe, right now I'm committing to dusting off my food tracker and getting that going again. If I can get my food right, the working out will come along too.
Here we go...

Minnesota - totally agree with Ners - you're making consistent forward progress, don't get down on your efforts! Sometimes the scale is funny (definitely not ha-ha funny), sometimes your body hangs onto stuff for a few more days than we want it to, etc. Guarantee if you keep up the effort, you'll see the progress soon. Sarcastic - oooooooo, strawberry season! I'm taking 1/2 day on Wednesday to go picking, then hopefully it's gallons and gallons of strawberry jam that can be canned and saved for the next dreary winter! Sounds like you have a good plan for the week in hydration, plants, and protein. Good luck. Kilroy - Monday is a good day to start things :-) Does your company stock pastries or do you have to go out to get one? Chiver - absolutely no worries, looks like you have a good plan without the pressure of a game. The condo situation sounds really stressful. Here's to a seller's market and a bidding war! What a great weekend for exercise (elliptical + kickass bootcamp class on Sat, intense 4+ mile hike yesterday). The eating was largely okay but I did make a veggie pizza sprinkled with fresh Mozz on Friday night and ate it through the weekend. Allowed a little more flexibility yesterday because that type of hike burns tons of calories, so I had ice cream with my hiking buddies afterward. Zero guilt, it's glorious. Forced myself to take today off - sometimes your body just needs it. This week - off today, rowing T/Th, Bootcamp W, Running F and hopefully a hike one weekend day and strength training the other. Have stuff for fruit smoothies in the am, lots of green salads for lunch, and for dinner. It's farmer's market season so will pick stuff up on my way home for dinner. Obstacles - allergies and/or cold are zapping my energy. Other than that, it's all mine to lose. The scale is going in the right direction. SO lucky my starting weight was on a super awful gross bloated day because I'm down a little more than 5#. This nevereverever happens this quickly for me so there will probably be some sort of correction next week. But I WILL win these games. Game 1 - 6/16/14: 5.1 lbs lost to 189.1 ( 9/9/14 7/9/14 goal: 7.8 lbs lost to 186.4) Game 2 - 6/16/14: 3.4 lbs lost to 189.1 ( 9/11/14 7/11/14 goal: 7.7 lbs lost to 184.8) *edited for fuzzy allergy brain
