Try 'em as adults. Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time...

That it isn't a political issue but a Current Events issue in which there is already a thread on this subject (Good Teenage Fun). Current Events

it is absolutely terrible, and also a Current Events issue as opposed to a political one. I'll be moving this thread shortly.

What are your thoughts. polar bear hunting? black kids targeting non blacks and mainly white people exclusively because of the skin color? frustration, not hate crime. we need to understand, nurture and coddle the participants after all it is the majority racist white Americas fault they behave that way. how long has it been going before the MSM picked up on it in earnest? and they're still not labeling it a hate crime. cops are pondering calling "beat whitey night" at the state fairs a hate crime but it's not certain at this time. what's amazing to me is that they are doing it to hasidic jews in NYC and it still isn't being classified as a hate crime.

Thoughts:
It is a hate crime. It should be punished by jail time, etc. so it stops. This thread should be merged with the other in Current Events, I don't think we need three threads on this subject.

Unless I've missed it, there isn't another thread on this subject in Current Events, Opti There is one in EE, but those folks often don't venture down here, so we've left it there. If there's another here in Current Events, please link to it. Thanks. mmhmm, Administrator

Mmhmm, as Tenn said in Reply#2, the Thread Title is "Good Teenage Fun" Currently under the thread about Homophobe tip stiffers. (6 threads down roughly?)
This has a better title, so perhaps roll that one into this one? Having computer issues this morning, so no link, sorry.

No problem, and thanks, Opti. It's practice to roll the newest thread into the oldest thread, so that's what I'll do. I didn't realize there was another one running. mmhmm, Administrator

Suspect charged with hate crime in possible 'knockout' assault in Brooklyn New York City police have arrested a man and charged him with assault as a hate crime after a 24-year-old says he was punched in the face. Police on Saturday were investigating whether it was part of a so-called "knockout" assault, in which the object is to knock out an unsuspecting person with one punch. The man says he overheard a group talking about it before he was hit. Police say the victim told them he was walking in Brooklyn around 2:45 a.m. Friday when he was struck once. He was not seriously injured. Amrit Marajh, 28, of Brooklyn, was arrested on charges of assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment as a hate crime because the victim is Jewish. It wasn't clear if he had a lawyer. Three others taken into custody were released. Police are investigating similar recent incidents, including in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. At least two deaths have been linked to the attacks this year. New York City police have deployed additional officers to city neighborhoods where at least seven attacks occurred in the past few weeks, including an assault on a 78-year-old woman. Authorities and psychologists say the "knockout" assaults have been around for decades — or longer — and it's played mostly by impulsive teenage boys looking to impress their friends. NBC News

Well, it looks like the incident in Brooklyn is being charged as a hate crime. We'll have to see what happens with the others.

As my friend and I catch up on the news on our phones while we try to wake up from last night's fun, she tells me that this game has turned deadly. I will try to find a link to direct y'all to but may not be able to paste one in with this phone. A 60-year old woman shot into a crowd of teens that attacked her. She said that she initially thought the teens were going to steal her purse, but then one punched her. After the second punch, she reached for her gun. The article my friend read said the woman is quoted as saying "I made it to 60, I want to see 61." ETA: a little digging around online tells me that story is actually a fake. I can't find find any legitimate news outlet that is carrying the story, and and the link that my friend was reading from didn't provide a location for these events to have happened. doesn't pass the stink test. sorry for for the tease! sent from my electronic distraction

Although the " knockouts" in NYC appear to have a prejudicial component, not all those across the nation do. One case I read was a homeless man and another an elderly women. This strikes me more as seeking out a more helpless victim. And I agree with Busymon - they should be tried as adults and serve the time that adults would serve. Part of their thinking is that they will be treated as juvenile offenders and get off lightly.

The media has been all over this like white on rice. Those who are so inclined may just not have thought about it as a "game" before.

Deadly for the attacked, yes. "The "knockout" game that left two Syracuse men dead has been gaining national attention as teens in other cities beat random victims. [...] In the Syracuse case of Daniels, he was beaten and stomped to death in May outside Los Amigos Market. A 16-year-old was found guilty of manslaughter, and his 13-year-old co-defendant pleaded guilty to assault, admitting he started the fatal beating by trying to knock out Daniels with a single punch Both were sentenced to 18 months behind bars." link

Wonder where they get these ideas? Life imitating art or art imitating life? "In each case, police are investigating whether the attacks are part of a violent game called "knockout," where the object is to target unsuspecting pedestrians with the intention of knocking them out cold with one punch. Authorities and psychologists say the concept has been around for decades — or longer — and it's played mostly by impulsive teenage boys looking to impress their friends." link

virtually every crime against jews(mostly hasidic) in brooklyn is considered a hate crime. the bloc vote is very powerful. but they had to pull teeth in the "knockout" game to get the nypd on board. I wonder why?

These 'kids' need to be charged as adults and part of the sentencing should be taking care of the person they injured ......... or heavily supervised at a care center. Boredom is absolutely no excuse.
This is terrible .... as bad as the bored kids that shot and killed the jogger several months ago.
Is it drugs? Video games that the characters get up again for the next session? What has happened to compassion and common sense?
