Several years ago my coworkers wanted to pull names to exchange Christmas gifts. I didn't care for several of the people I worked with, so I declined to participate. When people asked why I wasn't participating, I said "Because I don't want to". "Well, why not"? "Because I don't want to". The real reason was that I didn't want to risk having to buy a gift for someone I really didn't like. Exactly!

I'd join just to play nice in the sandbox. Me too. It's worth $20/year to keep coworkers cheerful and cooperative and bosses thinking how nice I am at raise and promotion time. The comment that did it for me to participate was this one!

No, it would not if they respect a person's choice not to participate. PS: I didn't get the job. Aw, sorry Spydah. I'm looking for a new job, too. Rejection sucks. It does but keep your hopes up. Something better will come along.

I decided to participate based on the feed back I got HERE, not based on the pressure at work. And it had nothing to do with the comment above (reply #56)! Whoever you get, give them a shake weight. And a copy of the South Park episode! "and here is some change for the ride home"

At the agency where I worked, we did no Secret Santa type stuff. We did have a potluck.
We didn't buy office gifts for new babies or weddings. I got invited to a lot of weddings, so I took a gift that way.
We did lunch parties for retirements and people leaving if they wanted one. Some people just wanted to quietly leave and not having anything.
We always bought a gift for the group secretary on Administrative Professional Day. she was the most important person in the office! Without her and the hard week she did, we would have all been in trouble.
NTEU had a party, but it was a couples things and usually attended by active union members as opposed to dues paying members like me.
I socialized outside of the office with people I liked. There were times when we would be going out to lunch together 5 days a week and I don't think any of us cared to see each other on weekends.
That said, I made lifetime friends there. I'm retired and so are many of my former co-workers. We are still in touch. It's a small circle of friends, but I think we will stay friends as long as we are living. We've already lost some of our group.
