One time, costco's payment system went down a few moments before it was my turn to pay. I felt the hot stares, and was ready to start screaming because I knew damn well there was money.
Fortunately, every register experienced the same problems and it became clear what was happening. They herded us off to the side and had to process us on another line one by one.

Hey, as long as you weren't one of the older ladies ahead of me who wrote checks, you're okay with me.

We get inquiry calls from our credit card company from time to time, mainly for out-of-the-country purchases on the credit card. They've noted in their filed that my wonderful DH is active duty military and travels so they don't automatically decline those out-of-the-country charges, but they do call me and ask if the charges match up with where in the world he is.

I hope none of you are ever behind me at the checkout - for other reasons.

Last summer my CU called for suspicious credit card activity - a $1 charge in a distant state.
I said that it certainly hadn't been me, so they immediately closed the account and in days I had a new card, new account, etc.
They probably headed off a minor financial disaster. Never had anything like that happen before or since.

Once Discover declined my $30 purchase at Target after a day of shopping. I called them when I got home; they thought I was doing too much shopping. I was no where near my $10K credit limit; I hadn't even spent near $1K that day. I have had a credit card company call me after my first purchase with the card; but that credit card company did let the charge go through.

Its not their place to decide you had shopped enough
