For the kids , I make a short list of things. In the past it has been books, good kitchen knifes, immersion blender, bake ware, hair straightener etc.
(Currently, I'm thinking of getting rid of all my mismatched, old and cheap kitchen stuff and replacing it with nice stuff from Crate and Barrel, William Sonoma etc.)
Although DS goes to this Christmas thing in Seattle and often picks up interesting stuff.
For the last few years, DH and I have taken time to stroll though the mall (while shopping for others) a few weeks before Christmas. I point out things that I notice (coats, jewelry, games, etc.) Later he usually goes back and picks out something I have liked.
So I don't know exactly what I am getting, but it will be something I liked. Sometimes he does throw in a surprise.
As far a romance, one year he gave me a toaster! I was pretty pissed and trying not to show it. Until I found the diamond tennis bracelet inside!
One of the best gifts I gave him was several gift cards to restaurants, movies, events etc. that we like. I labeled it as "20 date night plans".
It doesn't help that his birthday is Dec 15th. I always have to come up with 2 ideas.
This year he's getting a trip to Jamaica for his birthday.
And I'm looking at high end binoculars for his Christmas gift.

Wait Wait Wait, he talks about how a dust buster isn't romantic enough, and yet gets you a lego star wars set
You see what I've been dealing with for 10 years? The Legos are why he doesn't get to "surprise" me anymore. Well, getting a star wars lego set would certainly be a surprise. I'll give him that.

Especially when at the time I lived in an 8x10 dorm room. That thing would have taken up my entire desk! Yes it came with a display stand. He maintains it was an awesome and thoughtful gift because he knew I liked Star Wars.

Um, yeah- DH gets me a Lego set every year. They are the small "Architecture" series ones. I have to fight off the Boy so that he doesn't steal them and put them together behind my back.

I want my wife to find a job or at least Congress to reauthorize extended unemployment benefits. Under the current formula, she would be covered until April, but Congress has to reauthorize it after late December. I image it will expire, but maybe come back in a deal to avoid the next January 15th government shutdown date.

I now only exchange with my husband, daughter, and one brother that we see for Christmas. The past couple of years, we each put together a wish list on Amazon. So far all I have on my list is a kettle bell exercise kit. I can't think of anything else I want. I got husband and brother new electric shavers, but I'm stuck on my 22 yr old daughter. She's into running, so I got her a few little things- arm band for phone, neck warmer, gloves she can use on a touch screen...
I'd love some suggestions on what else I can get her. I usually like one 'wow' gift.

All I want for Christmas this year is a day off and a case of beer.
