Should the board be fired? Archie, I responded to that several posts ago. Please do try to keep up!! If the board does not reverse their reversal of their original decision, should they be fired?

Someone mentioned Exodus-- yes, I read it. Atlas Shrugged. MANY, Tenn. My parents had an extensive library, and I read every book in it. Not going to sit here and try to remember names of them all. But I read them at home. Back when I was young schools were not so much trying to indoctrinate kids to one school of thought like they are now. News flash-- we also celebrated holidays and had PE every day, and lots of other cool things that made me WANT to go to school every day.

This class was NOT ... I repeat ... NOT a part of the school curriculum. This was a special class taught after school hours. Parental permission was required for the child to attend! Of course, I'd be happy to have my child attend such a school, and I'd do my research to make sure before I enrolled my child in extra-curricular activities. I always did. This complainer, quite obviously, did not.

You can't remember a single "classic" that you read? The two you named were listed on the thread by others. I read both those a long time ago. While they were entertaining, I would not consider them "classics". Now, Catcher in the Rye, Grapes of Wrath, Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, Of Human Bondage - those were just a few of the classics.

The link in #108 is good. So-- mmhmm likes it for the classroom-- anyone else? I know I am in the minority but I feel when a educator picks a book to have read and discuss..there is a reason for it because the literature is important to discuss from a educational basis...whether it's a English class and the emphasis is on structure of writing, pointing out ways to communicate by the written word, exposure to what is considered classic literature, some thing that the average reader would not pick up for casual reading..and really trust the educators, teachers and those who advise them, to pick material that is appropriate for th age being taught. "Billy Bud " I never got the reason for but seemed to be a popular one back in the day. The same for books in say government/History courses, important to the educators , the ones trained and experienced to do this, to get subject being taught across to students, material helps in that education of. I am sure over site is important. My kid is in a area that certain racial stereotypes are common that I just know is BS..yet reading material promoting that outlook is what is used, of course get involved, big time..but over all..I feel so many of these objection are just personal feelings on a topic and have nothing to do with good education. I go with the educators, the ones entrusted , trained and educated themselves to do the job correctly.

You read every book in your parents' library, but you believe other children should have their intellects stifled, krickitt? They should be forbidden to read some books when you were not? Why is that?

I read all of those. Next? Have you read the complete works of Frank Yerby?? What game do you want to play?? You think I am not well read?? LOL!!! I was raised by an MD and the executive medical secretary to the director of medicine at Hermann hospital in Houston (where Gabby is). I was a priviledged kid that, yes, had a library in our home.

Dez, when reading material was presented at school, and my kids didn't understand something, or needed further information, they brought their questions home most of the time. I did the same thing. I knew, as they knew, the answers I got from my parents would be honest and straight-forward, without having to be "delicately worded" to avoid upsetting somebody. That's parenting!

Why do you people have a fit about people that are different than you?? WHY would you want to do anything that would put children at odds with their parent's values before they are grown and able to make up their own minds about what their values should be?? I know the answer to that, by the way. You know what?? If I had not been such a "liberal" kid my life would have gone much better. My mother created a monster and regretted it until the day she died. As we both aged, she told me so many times-- her regrets about how she raised us. I could write a BOOK on being liberal. It pretty much ruined my life-- but, man was I cool.

Cricket, Now I am really wondering (again) if you actually read the story. Students who wanted to read the book had to have their parents sign a permission slip. How does that put them "at odds with their parents' values"? You simply aren't making sense.

Krickitt, what does it take for you to understand these kids were not being exposed to anything for which their parents weren't given the opportunity to voice objections? This was an extra-curricular class, for the love of Pete! If the parents are particular, they need to ask what materials will be presented before they enroll the child in extra-curricular classes. That's their responsibility!

I didn't know they were going to make a movie, Tennesseer. While I don't usually care much for movies, that may be one I'll be interested in seeing.
