I need shopper help - I have to find a cute or fashionable girls raincoat for an 8 year old.
Where to look? My usual online shopping sites fail me & I have to get this kid a decent lined raincoat!
I'm afraid I'm going to have to go into a store to get one & this can be trouble for me with my charming (can convince Grandma to buy her most anything) Granddaughter. Plus I will have other kids with me, which always causes jealousy if only one is being bought for. Can you save me from having to set foot in a store?

I'd go to the Cute Girls Rain Coat store. Have you tried Burlington Coat Factory?

What kind of price point are you considering? We love Crew Cuts by JCrew. The Children's Place is cute and significantly cheaper online. LL Bean is in the middle of those two price wise and has good quality.

Thanks Chloe - just saw a $249 Ferndown jacket I love on crew cuts (oh no)! They have a KWay rain coat that will work if i can't find a lined one.
oped - Thank you, LL Bean was a little less dangerous & they have a trail jacket that will also work if I can't find a lined rain coat.
I wish Costco carried their rain jackets bigger than 6X. Not sure if they get them in special for our region, but that used to be our standard since they were fleece lined. You wear the rain jacket for several months here, so the extra lining of fleece is nice for cold windy days that we get in the near Canada area of PNW.

I just bought my girls' rain boots at Costco. Such a great deal! They both wear women's sizes, but they were still only $20/pair. They were even lined with "fur".

These are the rain boots I got the girls, so I guess we like colorful stuff. I got her a black raincoat but she's getting made fun of that she's wearing a garbage bag for a raincoat (evil little mean girls at her school). I thought it was stylish and cool to go with the rockin' boots . . . but apparently not in the mind of little sh*ts. I don't want her teased. She's trying to be a trooper even though she's not finding nice kids she wants to hang out with at her new school (first time that has happened to her). they seem to want to be tormentors more than anything else. I'd usually tell the kids to toughen up, but they are only a year or so out of very difficult time, so a bit fragile still.

Chloe - then I bet we have the same taste in boots :-) I loved that the boots were fur lined this year . . . i bought myself some a couple years back, but they aren't fur lined. I almost bought myself another pair just because I wanted them, but really - how many pairs of mucker boots do you need (i already have 2 pair - one boring & one colorful)

POM - you know that macys is one of my go to on line shops . . . but alas she is no longer 6X size, so macys is not working for me this year.
I swear that the black rain jacket is runway cute, but mean girls have ruined it for her. She's wearing her winter coat instead for now, but with our constant drizzly rain weather a proper raincoat is what she needs.

She's wearing her winter coat instead for now, but with our constant drizzly rain weather a proper raincoat is what she needs. Does it look bad on her and are they teasing her about it or does she look really cute in it? Was it a gift that she really may not like and is just saying that to spare feelings? Is 8 too young to teach her about jealousy? If she loves her rain jacket then she should wear it and wear it proudly. If somebody says something to her she should answer "I like it and I'm wearing it. If you don't like it then maybe you shouldn't get one" or "I'm sorry you don't like it but I do" in a nice way. Teach her not to be intimidated by others because as she gets older it will only get worse. People don't mess with confident people usually. ETA: JC Penny's have some that are really cute (love the Pea Coat, dress coats and leather jacket!) and they deliver: www.jcpenney.com/kids/coats-jackets/cat.jump?id=cat100260199&deptId=dept20000016&N=510&cm_mmc=msn%20non-trademark-_-m_apparel_children_outerwear-_-m_girls_raincoats_1210-_-girls+raincoats

She likes it and was wearing it regularly. She is pretty clear about what she likes and doesn't like and isn't shy about telling me. She wore it while we were out last weekend and her little brother made a comment about what was going on. She got pretty upset, so I asked her mom, who said she'd been wearing her winter coat to school instead.
If it was a normal situation I'd tell her to tough it out, but they all got extracted from an abusive parent & have been moved twice. This is the reality of a focused abuser that is crazy, that the police and court can't stop, and you don't want your family dead. He sees them as his possessions (wife and kids) and if he can't have them, he wants them dead. It has been a very abnormal situation. I think she is too fragile at this point to be able to let things bounce off of her, and for the sake of $50 that isn't a problem for me, I'll shield her while she builds herself back up to regular kid emotional level.
My daughter said that the dynamic of this school is very different from anywhere else they have been - the teachers are great, but the kids aren't. She said the other parents aren't very nice either. She is going to start volunteering in the classroom so she can have an eye on things. Very disappointing because she thought she could live there for a few years and get roots down again.
It is really hard to see the 8 year old, who was previously dynamic, friendly and popular be targeted like this. No school she's been in before had bullying (it was quickly squelched) & it just seemed like ALL of the kids wanted to be friends. It is probably some sort of jealousy thing because she is very pretty & smart, but she's also "the new kid" so it might just be that. If circumstances were normal she'd be able to blow it off and it wouldn't affect her. Unfortunately they aren't fully back to normal yet, better but not themselves yet.

$161 poorer and no raincoat yet. You guys better stop sending me to sites with cute stuff Got some nice justice long sleeve shirts (heavier tee shirt material & detailing is really nice!) Also have fallen for the Gymboree sweaters. We tried thrift store today too & nada in her size - darn. Finding lined ones is the challenge. We are probably going to stop in at Walmart tomorrow to see if they have anything.

Just a thought. Can you monogram the black raincoat to make it stand out? Or sew some ribbons or bows on the sleeves to make it look less like a garbage bag?

I didn't buy it . . . just loved it though. No, I won't spend quite that much on a kiddo that will change sizes seasonally!!! But Still NO Luck on finding a lined raincoat in her size. I braved WMart & they did not have a single kids raincoat. I guess we are a few weeks into rainy season, so all must be sold out. She didn't care for the design/patterns of the on line ones I showed her & they were not lined . . . so I am still looking. Maybe I will put out a plea on free-cycle or something. I am searching through zulilly, that has so many site choices it is hard to find things. They seem more like the 'sale of the day' site sort of thing.

It is somewhat fitted, with pockets, a cheerful pink/yellow plaid inside with folded back cuffs (so you see it) the plaid is also visible inside the hood. It's not about it looking like a garbage bag, but that it is black & the kids being jerks.

anne81 - thanks! Hatley is the kind of rain jacket I am looking for. I will show her the owls print and see what she thinks.
I am starting to get that my problem is that she is not into the "little girly" stuff any more and is fashion forward . . . so she might be pissed off at the moment because she knows she likes what she has just fine & her punky classmates don't have a clue what fashion is. But, so long as they make fun of her, it makes some of her stuff off limits. Mom is artsy & was a model, so they are fashion plates, but usually in styles of their own making (they look super cute, but they aren't reading glamour or vogue to decide what looks to go for).
DGD might just be about to rebel against the classmates. She has some very unique fashionista outfits that she & her auntie put together & they've been at my house for a while. She took them with her this weekend. Might be that she is about to kick some serious fashion butt at school.
I need to send her mom a note & see if she can have camera rolling in the class next week.

That isn't a lined cool weather/all weather raincoat. It wouldn't protect against cold temps in Autumn.
I've seen some nice flannel lined ones at WalMart for kids sort of like the one RockIt described - only in colors with a plaid or colored lining.
Probably your best bet would be to try to find an "all-weather coat - that's good for spring/fall climates - something waterproof and lined for warmth. These are pretty nice.
These are Old Navy - and not too hard on the budget this one's $35.
Even a quilted zip-vest under a coat would work - this one's $15.
Both are Girls' size XXS to XXL and come in different colors.
