With humans... it's super rare. It's hard enough to get patient enrolled in trials where there are two arms and open - getting patients enrolled where they don't know what their treatment is and their doctor doesn't either.... near impossible!!
I know that the human PUFA study we did was double blind. However, the standard treatment was being compared to that enhanced with PUFA (the thought was it would help control inflammation). All patients were treated identically, other than one group got PUFA and the other got a placebo.
From the analysis I did on my side of it, I didn't see any differences between the groups. But I didn't get a chance to analyze the clinical portion and maybe gross changes in the mouth were more apparent that weren't in lab values.
So all patients WERE getting treated for their disease, and they were getting the same treatment that they'd get if they weren't in the study.
